Thread 32 - Corona Cohort 'May' the Mumsnet force be with them for their venture to exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/05/2022 23:48

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

No exams here until Weds.

Glad today went well for mini @Piggywaspushed.

@singingstones that is rubbish. Sometimes these people don’t think of how much people worry about these things. To them it is an everyday admin mistake, to you and your DH it is a big appointment. I hope all goes well when it actually happens.

Good luck to those with exams tomorrow.

22Newnames · 23/05/2022 18:53

DS has been working hard today according to DH (I usually work from home but have been out all day today so asked DH to work at home to be around).

He was distracted by saving a fledgling from our cats though. He put it in the garden in a box and it’s mum came back for it. It has now flown away so we are keeping the cats out of the garden for a few hours to give it a chance. We think the nest in in a tree in our garden which the cats use as their toilet. They could have nested further away…

kiwiandcherries · 23/05/2022 20:08

First exam done and dusted here too. Seems to have gone well thankfully and it's just nice to be actually doing them now. The anticipation and build up is over and she can move through the schedule day by day now.
Sending good thoughts to everyone, especially all who are going through difficult times alongside this exam season.

Hattifatteners · 23/05/2022 20:24

@Alsoplayspiccolo DD also starts after half term. She has finished Art and has Biology and Chemistry to go. Both of which start in June.

ProggyMat · 23/05/2022 20:35

Well done to all of our Corona Cohort who have have sat their first exam(s)-onwards and upwards!
Feedback from DD on today’s ‘Latin unseen verse and prose paper’ was that it was overall good, bit tricky on the grammar and the scansion was more difficult than past papers but it’s done now and she’s done her best.
That’ll do for me!!!

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 23/05/2022 20:41

Well done to him @22Newnames !

Has anyone helped their DS/Dd with opening a Lifetime ISA ? Is that the next thing to feel anxious about after uni? Home ownership?

EwwSprouts · 23/05/2022 20:47

Pleased to hear positive feedback from all those who have sat exams today.

@singingstones So inconsiderate when your DH doesn't know what he is facing to not be clear about the cancellation.

@ealingwestmum Well done on biting your tongue.

mango0 · 23/05/2022 21:24

Well done to all who have sat their first exam today, it sounds like the consensus was positive across the subjects. It must be such a relief to them to have the first one (on two!) under their belts without any major issues.

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant DD has a stocks and shares LISA with Nutmeg, which she opened with some money she got for her 18th birthday. It's not doing great so far, but I'm guessing that's just a reflection of the current state of the world and hoping by the time she's in a position to buy a house things will have improved! I'm not a homeowner and have never had any savings until the past couple of years so it was the blind leading the blind when we were looking at the options.

DD has had an early night after lots of psychology revision over the past few days. She seems calm but a bit tired so I'm hoping she sleeps well.

NCTDN · 23/05/2022 21:33

I wish I knew how I could get dd to sleep well tonight...

mummabear74 · 23/05/2022 21:35

Congratulations to those who had first exams today and so sorry to hear of recent sad news.

I've been avoiding the thread as very little revision has been done here as DD is struggling with mental health. She's started therapy recommended by her consultant (whilst awaiting ASD assessment) and the therapist has told her she has severe anxiety and severe depression. So I'm left trying to pick up the pieces and am trying to keep positive with regular treats and trying to keep everything lighthearted. It's a real struggle but I've been through the frustrated and annoyed stages and that didn't help so am desperately trying to keep everyone relaxed and calm.

singingstones · 23/05/2022 22:01

Solidarity to you mumma, many on this thread have been somewhere similar at various points. What a bugger that you are all going through this. Keep up the treats and cheeriness and try not to worry about the academic stuff - nothing is more important than your DD's health and if exams don't go well, the universities will still be there next year or at any point in her future when it takes her fancy.

There is not much revision going on here either, for different reasons. DS has his first exam on Thursday and has spent a lot of time today on his Xbox. They can only do what they can do.

Fiddlersgreen · 23/05/2022 22:16

Good luck to everyone doing psychology tomorrow, I think there’s quite a few

crazycrofter · 23/05/2022 22:29

Sorry to hear that @mummabear74 - poor dd and poor you too, I know how hard it is trying to support loved ones with mental health issues.

mummabear74 · 23/05/2022 22:43

Thank you @singingstones I feel like I'm awaiting the inevitable breakdown, it's just a matter of timing. It's very hard not to retaliate when she needs someone to attack to let out her frustrations. I do hope anyone else in a similar position is managing to stay strong. I'm counting down to her final exam already with just 32 days to go!

Good luck to your son for his first exam on Thursday. DD has her first tomorrow with Psychology.

Cantonet · 23/05/2022 23:21

@Nctdn Sominex ( phenergan) for sleep is useful & can be given from 16 years old.

@Mummabear I've been in your very position a year ago. Just do whatever you can to get through this period. Exams are not important in the scheme of things and can always be taken at a later stage. Sometimes medication is also needed, as well as counselling to get things back on an even keel.

The very best of luck to everyone doing Psychology tomorrow. Ds1 has been tormented by his drug rash all weekend.
So he's changed antihistamines and seems to be better on the new one.
I'm hoping he will be ok tomorrow as he's found it very difficult to focus this last week.

singingstones · 24/05/2022 05:56

Best of luck to the psychologists this morning 🍀

Oblomov22 · 24/05/2022 06:26

Love to you Mummabear. There is only so much you can do. And what you are doing is more than good enough.

singingstones · 24/05/2022 07:15

Hope your DD manages today ok, mumma

Seeline · 24/05/2022 07:27

Good luck to all psychologists this morning! DDs first one with business tomorrow afternoon 🍀🍀

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 24/05/2022 07:30

Sending much love and good wishes @mummabear74 , try to stay strong and get some time out from the situation if you can ..even just a walk, when things seem to be spiralling into possible conflict 💐

Volterra · 24/05/2022 07:32

Good luck to everyone today.
Really sorry to hear that Mummabear . So tough to see them struggle 💐
Cantonet DH can’t take cetirizine as after a few days he is really sleepy. Loratadine is fine though.
Really sorry to hear about your DH’s appointment Singingstones, that is rubbish.

Not going to tell DS about our family friend until after exams. I did tell DD who was devastated as she was closer to her than all her grandparents. DH took her to shop to get comfort supplies in and I had the Chelsea flower show on which she found calming. Have chased up estate agent to find where buyer’s solicitor is with searches and am sorting out storage options. Really need this survey to happen soon, if all goes to plan we are moving in 5 weeks and I feel a bit excited though trying to keep a lid on it as a lot still could go wrong.

DD has also found Sominex useful and Lush twighlight body spray. My go to for exam stress for finals was Aconite which is homeopathic and I’m sure it was placebo effect but I used to look like a drug dealer handing them out before exams as quite a few of us found them useful.

Heifer · 24/05/2022 07:41

So the day is finally here, 1st A level. It has been a long time coming since this thread was started back in yr10. So many have joined and I just want to thank you all for your advice, chat, jokes and sharing your stories. So sorry to read of so many problems, mh issues, family struggles. Life can be so unfairly harsh.

Good luck to all those taking A levels, may it bring them 1 step closer to reaching their goals whatever they may be - and if not, there is always another step in the other direction available to take, either now or later. Always a plan B,C and D :-)

singingstones · 24/05/2022 07:44

Hope the antihistamines hold up well for him today Cantonet. So many DC going through so much at the moment 🙁 I so want them all to be happy with how they've done!
