Thread 32 - Corona Cohort 'May' the Mumsnet force be with them for their venture to exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/05/2022 23:48

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

So sorry to read the sad news on this thread: puts everything into perspective and I’ve just given Ds a big unexpected hug :-( Hoping that time of calm comes for you all soon @Volterra

ds’d last day of school yesterday: we had one of his mates sleeping off the effects of too much daytime vodka for a couple of hours…! Ds is finding it hard I think: all feeling a bit real and a bit nervous about next steps - totally agree that they’ve missed out on lots of growing up and independent adventures with covid. It’s going to feel like a bigger leap than normal.

dd had edexcel. I’d heard was hard but she hates maths anyway esp non calf,so no harder than usual to her:she reckons she onlyattempted half the questions which is scaring me
a bit…

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/05/2022 09:21

Have you seen the muttering about the Edexcel paper being leaked, Isthisjustnormal?
It would be awful if they have to re-sit a new paper, so I’m hoping it’s just Chinese whispers.

ealingwestmum · 21/05/2022 09:27

Well done to the IB’ers on here for finishing up; must be a great feeling to have 5 weeks longer than A level peers!

Hoping everyone can have as peaceful weekend as their individual circumstances allow. It’s been a long slog.

Every year there’s a leak of Edexcel on Maths it seems.

crazycrofter · 21/05/2022 09:32

@Alsoplayspiccolo ds also said it was fine - and he’s usually around a 6 (but admittedly he did actually revise this time!). I heard about the leak; surely they’d just discount this one and create grades from the other two?

EspeciallyDistracted · 21/05/2022 10:16

Just to say I’m sorry too to hear about all the very sad events that have been happening in the last few days Flowers

Fiddlersgreen · 21/05/2022 10:44

Oh we are edexcel for gcse maths too and all I got from DS was “fine” maybe I’ll try to grill him some more. He’s been getting 7 in mocks

Nard75 · 21/05/2022 10:56

DS said the edexcel paper was harder than any others he has done before. He said the last few questions were really difficult.

cariadambyth · 21/05/2022 11:15

I’m now wishing I’d stayed in M&S drinking hot chocolate, dd is currently crying as she’s apparently forgotten how to analyse history sources! Nothing I say is helping and my positivity is more annoying than anything.
I so feel for those of you with GCSEs as well x

Isthisjustnormal · 21/05/2022 12:15

@Alsoplayspiccolo : yes I did see that ... will be interesting to see how it develops. I assume as @crazycrofter says I assumed if that was found to be the case they'd just discount the paper...?! There are some great memes on twitter about the paper and the impossible last question...

singingstones · 21/05/2022 12:54

I have just had a look at that last question and it is ridiculously hard! Especially as non-calculator, I couldn't have done it without looking up sin 60 Blush

singingstones · 21/05/2022 12:55

I do a bit of gcse maths tutoring on the side and have never seen anything as difficult as that, even on Edexcel (which I do think is generally harder than WJEC)

Delphigirl · 21/05/2022 13:06

My dad thought edexcel maths was “horrific” but I think it was mainly the impossible last question which made it so. She liked the first 2/3 and then found it very difficult. She is hoping for an 8 (or was, before the exam).
I’m really sorry to hear of everyone’s difficulties - condolences to @Volterra, sorry to hear about your DS’s long wait for nothing @Monkey2001 … and the such awful news of teens feeling that the world has nothing to offer them. Unbearable.
I have just been reading about Raleigh International going into voluntary liquidation days after taking kids’ hard earned money for gap year experiences which now will not happen. I can’t imagine how those kids are feeling - despairing I imagine - after all the shit of the last few years, and a week before A levels for some of them - I really could cry. I would not be surprised that there is some corporate wrongdoing involved - the timing is very unfortunate. Poor kids.

Heifer · 21/05/2022 13:06

Thought I would log on to catch up - have been having migraines this week so have got behind. So sorry to read the sad news. @Volterra I find your positivity so inspiring, you seem to be able to see the good in rubbish situations.

Good luck to all next week. DD has been working hard and is currently ok and level. She even booked a driving lesson for this morning at 9.00am - first one since over a year (she has been out driving occassionally with DH). I was blown away by the cost though £32 for 1hr lesson! her last instructor charged £25. DD said it was really good and was told to book herself a driving test as waiting time up to Sept and she could get a cancellation sooner hopefully.

Good luck to all DDs/DSs next week. Really hope it goes well. Looking forward to hearing the comments re exams etc. God, this is all so real now isn't it.

crazycrofter · 21/05/2022 13:40

I can’t wait for these exams to start. Dd isn’t stressed but is being a bit high maintenance about her need for varied locations to study in!

Poor kids missing out on their gap years @Delphigirl and losing their money too, that’s really rubbish.

We’ve just had our house down valued by the buyer’s lender. 😬 I hate the whole house buying process so much!

Volterra · 21/05/2022 14:14

Oh no CrazyCrofter 😓I am worried about that and with you on hating selling and buying.

Thank you Heifer That sucks about the migraines 💐 I really can’t believe they start next week!

Monkey2001 · 21/05/2022 14:26

@crazycrofter are you sure it has come from the lender? Sometimes people make up excuses. Given how much interest you had in the house when you put it on the market, I would be inclined to say you are not prepared to lower the price and see what happens. It is all a negotiation!

22Newnames · 21/05/2022 17:50

So sorry to hear of all the sad news Sad

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2022 18:06

DS has not emerged other than to go for brief drive to a cricket match and to eat tea and lunch and watch half an hour of a play off final.

Been working since 8am! Should be an A Level in diligence.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 21/05/2022 19:15

I'm sorry I've been so neglectful and so sorry to hear sad news @Oblomov22 @Eliakimi and @Volterra.

I seem to be suffering with perimenopause pms worse than ever , waking up two or three times a night soaked in sweats, barely had any sleep. Work is so busy getting up super early to fit it in too.

Dd last day in her weekend job today. That and new boyfriend she has been burning candles at both ends too. We will NOT be watching Eastendrs 2008 tomorrow but will be taking the dog for a long walk and I've a NOW subscription for a week to watch Harry Potter reunion.

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant You have done a fantastic job with these threads. Menopause sucks.

11pm last night DS told me school weren't running a minibus to today's sports fixture so could I drive him? Short notice for an hour each way but it was the last one for school. It didn't go well but I took him for an early dinner, and we even ended up buying him some clothes now there will be no uniform Mon-Fri. I was a bit grumpy last night but turned out to be a bonus pleasant day. Revising now, Saturday evening, which is unheard of.

crazycrofter · 21/05/2022 22:52

@Monkey2001 the estate agent saw the report so it’s definitely genuine. Problem is they’re getting a 95% mortgage so I guess lenders are being extra cautious. The other offers are no longer there and we’d have to start the process again so looks like we’ll need to take the hit. The buyers have no cash to meet us half way 😬

Ughh, sorry to hear that.🙁

Wheresthebeach · 22/05/2022 13:32

Crazy sorry to read about the stress of the house move. Down valuing must have come as a shock. I hate moving...hope it all gets sorted somehow.

Isthisjustnormal · 22/05/2022 14:07

Ughhh, @crazycrofter how frustrating. House moving is just so stressful :-(

Zebracat · 22/05/2022 16:29

Well she has firmed Exeter, with Royal Holloway as insurance. She’s done the finance form, but hasn’t shown me , so that could be the start of a fairly long process. Now for accommodation. She’s quiet, so won’t want constant parties, and poor, so won’t want insanely wealthy flatmates. I’m looking at it all and just getting confused. She doesn’t really know even if she wants catered or self catered. No idea how much money she will have or where it will come from. I feel more anxious now than at any other point in the process.
