Thread 31 Covid Cohort - Hopping through Easter and Revision

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

Well done to your DS, Monkey.

DD has just told me that they're not allowed to be told their NEA marks. It's frustrating that different exam boards allow different things; she's got NEAs in 2 subjects and could really do with knowing how they've gone.

Monkey2001 · 28/04/2022 23:47

@Alsoplayspiccolo it might be the school which doesn't release the NEA results to students, our school varied by subjects when DS1 did his. DS2's school were very generous on NEAs, DS1's ridiculously strict to the extent that barely any of them got A*s (pre numerical grades).

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant lots of people have been doing their sports since primary school, so 10-12 years, and it is right that those are the ones who get the top grades for practical. I expect@Heifer 's DD has an A* for practical in the bag!

Monkey2001 · 28/04/2022 23:48

A*!

Heifer · 29/04/2022 00:36

@Monkey2001 I wish DD had an A in the bag for the practical! We've always been told it's really hard to get high marks with hockey - even an international U18 didn't get full marks (according to a coach) Although DD has been playing since she was 5 she isn't playing at the level she could be, decided to stick with the local club rather than going for a better level so that will count against her. Funnily enough I have to do some editing of the videos tomorrow. Got 5 matches to go through and mark each time DD does something on the list of skills and note the time etc, so it can be sent off to the the invigilator to watch and mark. Luckily DD does get A* in the theory side so she was predicted an A (fingers crossed as she needs an A overall). She is doing A level AQA.

Well done @orange DD on the EPQ and @monkey DS on the PE.

@AlsoplayspiccoloThis is against QCA regs. They should be told marks but not grades (as they don't exist iyswim).

DS is 18 today!!😯

crazycrofter · 29/04/2022 07:18

Well done to your ds @Monkey2001 - amazing to get an A* overall even with C in the practical! Dd says she’s getting her history NEA mark today.

Happy birthday to your ds @Piggywaspushed !

BlueMarigold · 29/04/2022 07:48

Congratulations @Monkey2001 !

Alsoplayspiccolo · 29/04/2022 07:53

Happy, happy birthday to mini Piggy!

Fiddlersgreen · 29/04/2022 08:00

Happy Birthday @Piggywaspushed DS!!

ealingwestmum · 29/04/2022 08:17

Fabulous mark Monkey

happy 18th to your boy Piggy!

Wheresthebeach · 29/04/2022 08:43

Happy Birthday to mini Piggy and fab grade Monkey

DD got told her mark for Geography coursework, but not the grade as the boundaries not set yet. She did look at what the grade would have been in 2019 based on her mark so she had a steer.

crazycrofter · 29/04/2022 08:54

Dd has 32/40 for her history NEA and seems a bit disappointed. Presumably when you look at 2019 grade boundaries, that’s an overall mark including NEA and both exams? There’s loads of history options and they seem to range between 73 and 81% for an A. 32/40 is 80% so seems a solid high A/low A to me, but maybe the rest of the class have done better.

crazycrofter · 29/04/2022 08:56

Ah, no, I see it now - the coursework boundaries are shown separately- it’s just an A

crazycrofter · 29/04/2022 08:57

Sorry for the random bold type!

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 29/04/2022 09:00

Happy Birthday @Piggywaspushed DS 🎂!

Happy birthday to your DS @Piggywaspushed 🍻🎂

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2022 10:30

@crazycrofter is that the history coursework? What exam board are you again? DS does Edexcel and I don't think he has been given a mark?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2022 10:32

Same for his literature coursework (OCR).

crazycrofter · 29/04/2022 10:35

It’s AQA @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2022 10:36

Ah OK, I don't know if it's our school or the board. It would be good to know though.

ealingwestmum · 29/04/2022 11:09

Edexcel for Eng Lit here Justhere; mark given but no grade. History is PreU, not sure what the score is with them.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2022 11:14

@ealingwestmum I think he'd be happy with a score to be honest, he's getting literally nothing other than 'it's good'. I suppose we should be grateful they're not saying 'that's awful!' 😀

Chewbecca · 29/04/2022 13:20

DS was given his score for English Literature NEA but no grade. Oddly it was out of 25 and all the prior year tables show a bigger mark so a bit confused.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 29/04/2022 13:34

The essays are marked out of 25 @Chewbacca, Our school marks their essay in a similar way (25 or 30), DS was saying the other day 24 is an A* and 22 an A which seems quite tough to me.
