Thread 29 - Covid Cohort - Whirlwinds and Waiting

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 23/02/2022 22:29

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Fruity

EwwSprouts · 25/02/2022 19:26

@Fruitygal Sorry clearly confused. Great minds though!

crazycrofter · 25/02/2022 19:37

Happy birthday to DD’s of @Fruitygal and @coffeeandbiscuittime!

@Oblomov22 ds is also watching through the top (250 in his case) films at a rapid pace! Watching on bus, at break time on his phone etc.. leaving zero time for study! On Wed night he went with his mates to watch Uncharted at the cinema at 5.10, and then went for food. At 9.10 he texted me to say they’d decided to watch a second film 😮 so expensive, but it’s his money 😂 Apparently the cinema are showing The Godfather and Dune for £3 each tomorrow so that’s another double bill!

Fruitygal · 25/02/2022 19:53

@EwwSprouts DH and I were so hopeful for York so very disappointed- having done all the offer day craziness and choosing with two other DCs I know it’s very department dependent. There are some fab departments in fairly weak unis and vice versa. Leicester has fab law, geology and biosciences departments but economics and accountancy is a department on the edge with issues.

BlueMarigold · 25/02/2022 21:43

Sorry not been on the thread today. Discovered Octordle!

Monkey2001 · 25/02/2022 21:54

@BlueMarigold hexadecordle.co.uk/?mode=daily - present from DS!

BlueMarigold · 25/02/2022 22:15

@Monkey2001 Thankyou!

Nard75 · 25/02/2022 22:42

DS got a conditional offer from Warwick today he needs 2 A* and A. Not sure what he is going to do but thinking of insurance Birmingham or Nottingham. The Nottingham offer was AAB.

Shimy · 25/02/2022 22:49

@Nard75 Congratulations to your DS. very high offer though 2As! What course has he applied for? Warwick is also DS's highest offer but at AAA.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 25/02/2022 22:51

Successful day at Cardiff. Dd is basically awaiting the offer... the interview was positive and audition went well. She made a friend too. Free lunch, tea and coffee not much else am afraid. She loves the city more than Southampton, says both the courses are similar and got on really well with the lecturers. Strong sense of a supportive , sociable music community. She liked the vibe of the music building and they peeped into the student life centre.

Yes the buildings are separate but all around the civic area of the city. The Taly halls are a walk away (en suite) but she doesn't mind that - they are cheap too. I think she will be happy there But she still says Southampton is better. I think purely because of distance. Soton is our next city.

She has loads of confidence ahead of heretical Festival comp on Sun and Soton interview Monday. The Cardiff lecturers told her today she was an ideal music student as interested in lots of different avenues !

That's great news Orange although tough decisions to be made as to which she chooses.

Congrats on the offer for your DS Nard - is that the highest offer given on this ongoing thread?

Happy birthday to those celebrating today. Can't believe our babies are turning 18 😲

Nard75 · 25/02/2022 23:11

@Shimy he has applied for Maths and also did the entrance exam for Warwick the TMUA.

Shimy · 25/02/2022 23:17

Math is very competitive there, so he must be very very clever to have got an offer, even though high, he'll probably ace it. Good luck to him!

crazycrofter · 25/02/2022 23:18

Congrats to ds on the Warwick offer @Nard75 and glad dd has had such a positive day @OrangeCinnamonCroissant.

I've no idea where 'heretical' came from Confused

Great news Nard75 Is he going to firm Warwick with Birmingham as insurance? DS not sure on his insurance yet but will firm Bath.

Nard75 · 26/02/2022 06:45

TBH @Volterra I'm not sure what he is going to do until he has actually submitted. Will wait and see what happens but he has had all 5 offers in.

singingstones · 26/02/2022 07:24

Congrats to your DS, Nard, that is brilliant to get an offer from Warwick for maths, 2 x A* just shows how competitive it is.

Good to hear she enjoyed herself Orange. Cardiff is great for music students because there's so much going on for its size, with the symphony orchestra and chorus and WNO. Good luck for Southampton and may the offers ensue!

Fruitygal · 26/02/2022 07:39

@Nard75 congratulations for your son!! Has he got offer days to go to now?

Thanks everyone for the best wishes - we’ve had the takeaway of your choice with presents, seriously crazy balloons 🎈Colin cake and fizz! Mid week family celebration…

Now tonight is the mini party her choice but I’m pleased! On a child’s party meets boozy uni house party theme! Think cheese and pineapple on sticks, dodgy takeaway pizza, homemade kiddie cake, pass the parcel with crazy forfeits, cocktails and beer pong with shots!!

We are going out but DS1 will be upstairs gaming so available for emergencies

Volterra · 26/02/2022 08:12

Nard75 I totally get that - I only know what DS intends to firm as someone asked him where he was hoping to go whilst I was in the room!! To be honest university the least of our worries at the moment and I think we’re all grateful there is a fair amount of time to decide.

ealingwestmum · 26/02/2022 08:29

Nard, very well done to him on that Maths offer.

Glad Cardiff went well Orange, and that she is able to ride on a high into the coming week’s interview and this weekend’s festival. Choice is lovely, but a challenge too…oh the double edged sword to decision making!

Heifer · 26/02/2022 08:33

Happy 18th to your DD @Fruitygal - that party sounds great.
Great news re Cardiff @OrangeCinnamonCroissant.

Well done to the offer holders - it's nice to see some have finally come in, fingers still crossed for those still waiting.

Wheresthebeach · 26/02/2022 08:55

Glad your DD had such a great day Orange. Cardiff sounds lovely. One of DDs best friends just got an offer from Cardiff and she’s over the moon as it’s her first choice.

Congratulations on the offer Nard DH did maths at Warwick and loved it.

Fruity sounds a great Birthday

It’s funny how Uni offer days pan out. I guess it’s why it’s so important to go. They all look great on the websites but you need to be there to really understand the offering for your chosen subject.

Volterra · 26/02/2022 09:16

That’s good your DD enjoyed Cardiff OrangeCinnamon, it’s really suited my DD.DS could do with reading the various emails he’s getting at some point, he does need to visit somewhere really I think.

Really behind on the thread and am missing loads of people out, my apologies.

Oblomov22 · 26/02/2022 09:35

Sounds like my kinda party.
Congrats Nard.
