Thread 29 - Covid Cohort - Whirlwinds and Waiting

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 23/02/2022 22:29

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

DD has been short paid on her hours ( her boss has confirmed that she put the right amount through to Head Office). She has also been told that next pay will not be until 6th of April when she was expecting to be paid 25th of month as usual.

I suspect the company she works for is struggling ? Would any of you come to this suspicion too? It is an outlet store that sells cheap make up ( lower brands end of line bourjois etc). They pay her minimum wage ( 4,56 for her) and watch them from Head Office to make sure they are always working for it !

@Piggywaspushed

Yay, here's TWAT! So glad I am not now going to be the only person who calls you that, I see...
Grin Grin Grin

I am a TWAT in real life to be fair so the name is rather apt!!!

Thanks all Flowers

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/02/2022 16:26

Thanks for the new thread, Orange and the updated list, singing.
STILL waiting for KCL here, but DD has booked offer holder days for Birmingham, Southampton and RHUL, which are her top 3 (Brum favourite).

Welcome, Tango. DD would have loved to have Bath on her list, but they don’t offer English, sadly.

Thanks for asking, ealing - yes, we seem to be over the worst of the weather issues here, although it’s still pretty blustery. Fortunately, our village is on a hill, so no flooding, but a fair amount of trees and fencing down.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 24/02/2022 16:35

@Shimy

Welcome aboard TWAT. Lovely for your DD to have received a Bath offer so early on. We really have no idea why it's all so silent in the business school dept. Hardly any offers at all, not even on the student room and looks like we could be waiting till April judging by their latest letter.
I feel really awful for those still waiting, an early offer or indeed a timely offer makes them feel more wanted and valued. The trauma of the Oxbridge process nearly drove me to an early grave so I cannot imagine it dragging on for this long, I really for you and your DC. It makes you wonder why when the deadline has passed so many Unis are still being so slow, it is totally unfair on the DC applying having it hang over them especially the early applicants.
icanbewhatiwant · 24/02/2022 16:47

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant just commenting to get it on my watch list.

ealingwestmum · 24/02/2022 16:56

Welcome to the bright side Tango! Full of lovely people here, and a few more brummies (Crazy, me for starters) Smile

Good to hear your DD is feeling more relaxed too after making her choices.

Gosh Orange, being on cctv whilst working, paid the minimum teenage wage (or is lower?) AND getting short paid is tough. You are right to keep your eye on it.

Shimy · 24/02/2022 17:09

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango I'd love to know the inspiration for your name Wink. DS has been waiting since early October! I'm glad your DD has her offers though and now relax a bit. DS messed up his uni choices a bit so it's really important he gets the Bath offer as it will be one of his two.

EwwSprouts · 24/02/2022 17:10

@TangoWhiskyAlphaTango Hello!

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant Moving the pay day across the end of the very likely financial year end does look dodgy. Will it revert to 25th for April earnings?

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 24/02/2022 17:24

I think it is a permanent change @ewwsprouts

@ealingwestmum I was horrified about the CCTV. Didn't seem to bother Dd too much though.

She moans about the wage but still able to spend in Wetherspoons, getting nails done and highlights!

She has red and glitter nails done today ...no coincidence that they are Cardiff /Southampton colour !

Volterra · 24/02/2022 17:51

Hi TangoWhisky and welcome. Bath is DS’s first choice too. Not sure on insurance yet, possibly Southampton, if not it will be Cardiff.

Decorhate · 24/02/2022 17:54

Thanks for the new thread!

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant re the work situation, that does sound concerning. Having said that, a friend’s Ds worked for a well respected company last summer & is still owed pay due to some cock-up.

ealingwestmum · 24/02/2022 17:59

To be fair Orange, the amount is less important, it’s the huge sense of their independence that £ earnings bring. I still yawn my daughter to death with the purchase of a wrangler denim jacket with my early wages as a Saturday girl in a men’s hair salon at age 14.

And now that’s made me think how the value of some services has not changed much. I was getting £1 or more, tip money for a hair wash/perm/high-lights rinsing etc…I don’t go to a salon myself but has that changed drastically from 1982?? Clearly, demand for perms has 😂

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 24/02/2022 18:00

I've always thought Bath must be a fantastic place to do History or Archaelogy ...I guess they leave that up to Bristol /Oxford.

Dd and DH are on the train to Cardiff she is having a full on applicant day as well as interview and audition . I will report back second hand on the freebies.

80s Perms will be the next big thing to come around again.

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant the very best of luck for your DD over the next few days.
May she shine 🌟
@ZittiEBuoni I'm not too far from you.
@Hattifatteners Bristol Vet Med. Is really slow.
DD got offers really late from there, after that massive online questionnaire that took hours to complete. Are they still not doing interviews?

Shimy · 24/02/2022 18:15

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant O yes! please report back on the freebies. DS yet to receive anything. Not much love from his universities I must say.

Heifer · 24/02/2022 18:19

Hi and welcome Tango. Have you been on MN for a long time? I've seen the Tango name in various forms over the years but not sure if it's all you or multilples :-) Congrats on Firming, that much be a relief.

Everyone got the VHS set to record the Money show later? ;-) Will be interesting to hear his take on it all.

Heifer · 24/02/2022 18:20

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant MN good luck vibes to your DD in Cardiff

ealingwestmum · 24/02/2022 18:22

Good luck to her Orange!

ProggyMat · 24/02/2022 18:24

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant
Another belting update on ‘our list’ @singingstones!
Waves at TWAT Smile

Hattifatteners · 24/02/2022 18:24

@cantonet still no interview, but a long reflection questionnaire to fill in.

Shimy · 24/02/2022 18:28

@Heifer What is this money show? VHS Grin

22Newnames · 24/02/2022 18:36

Welcome @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango. Bath would be DS’s first choice if he gets an offer (we are still waiting for Bath, Durham and Warwick).
