Thread 29 - Covid Cohort - Whirlwinds and Waiting

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 23/02/2022 22:29

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.
@singingstones with a little prompting he wants Rutland or Sherwood. A 31 week let makes catered doable cost wise. Otherwise he likes Cripps or Derby with a summer job to pay for it.
Snap - also with prompting (a lot though) DD has agreed to apply for Rutland or Sherood and then Cripps /Derby etc. She wasn't happy with the thought of having to pack up her room at Christmas & Easter until I pointed out it was literally £1k a time to do so. Suddendly didn't seem quite to bad...

My only concern about a 31 wk contract is do they miss out on anything? Any experienced this before? Is packing up your room the only issue?

Piggywaspushed · 04/03/2022 16:24

Hi everyone. Well done on all the good news.

We are off to offer holder day at Brum tomorrow : should be at York, too, but that is impossible, sadly!

I have been marking year 13 mocks. They are beyond awful...

Cantonet · 04/03/2022 16:40

That really doesn't surprise me @Piggy.
DS admitted to me that he has no exam technique at all. He still managed to run out of time in Psychology with 25% extra & 3 questions left to answer 🤦🏼‍♀️
Many congratulations to your dd @Orangecinnamon. Congratulations on all the new offers, especially the Medical/Vet. Ones as it's such an arduous process. Also the many successes on this thread are all brilliant news.
No news here other than Ds has looked at the Aberystwyth Scholarship paper (due next week) and has said it looks very hard. Part of me is cross with myself for asking him to do it with dyslexia & adhd, but part of me isn't.

Piggywaspushed · 04/03/2022 16:52

In my experience, he might not get the scholarship, but he'll get a reduced offer for showing willing...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 04/03/2022 16:56

Happy Friday afternoon all. Waaay too much to catch up but I see @ChristopherTracy's DC has passed their driving test so congratulations there and lots of people with more offers.

We, sadly, are sitting, waiting, wishing for Warwick to send an offer, it's really getting quite tedious.. DS wants to firm Notts (Cripps Hall accommodation) but has no insurance uni. I suspect Warwick may reject like York due to a huge number of applicants who all seem to have 3 x A* predictions Sad.

I also started doing the student loan forms today but waiting for DS to be home before formalising (better let him know what he's signing up for!!)

It's his 18th next week, such a scary thought that he's an adult!

mummyinbeds · 04/03/2022 16:59

@heifer when I say a little prompting, I might have meant I told him🤣

Way back in the dark ages when I was at uni I had to pack up my room at Christmas and Easter for the first two years (three years of campus accommodation at £23 a week) It was a good opportunity for a tidy up and meant my room got a good clean. I don't remember it being a hassle. In my third year I stayed over Easter and most people seemed to go home whether they had a room or not so I don't think I missed out on anything for those first two years. I like the idea of saving £1000 per time to not miss out on seeing his friends at home. And it's only for the first year.

Fiddlersgreen · 04/03/2022 17:01

With the 31 week accommodation contracts, do they go back to the same room/halls when they go back? With the same students as the previous term?
Also, would the others in their flat/halls also be on 31 week contracts or would it be mixed?
Thinking about DS potentially missing out on socialising and events if they don’t stay

mummyinbeds · 04/03/2022 17:04

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn fingers crossed for Warwick. I'm not sure how DS got an early (ish) offer from them - I'm guessing they don't get too many applications for French law. He certainly has no A* predictions.

mummyinbeds · 04/03/2022 17:06

@Fiddlersgreen at Nottingham they all go back to the same room and Sherwood and Rutland are all 31 week rooms.

Monkey2001 · 04/03/2022 17:11
**@Monkey2001* @Volterra* so am I unnecessarily worrying about dd getting lost in a big city?!
I don't think you should worry!

DS found out today that he is on the waiting list for Newcastle, so better than a rejection, but not as good as an offer. 2 more months of limbo ahead.....

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 04/03/2022 17:14

@mummyinbeds Your DS is doing Law with French Law IIRC, so that may be a factor? And your early application? DS didn't submit until November. Lots of people on TSR moaning about not having heard from Warwick law so at least I'm not alone! Grin

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 04/03/2022 17:15

oh for goodness sake, you say right there in your post that he's doing French law. I'm tired is my excuse for not reading properly, sorry!

ealingwestmum · 04/03/2022 17:27

Argh Monkey, but it’s true in that it’s not a no. And med students with more offers can only study in one institution, so hang in there.

But I hope his other option does come back with an offer to take the edge off.

Volterra · 04/03/2022 17:51

Shimy so sorry to hear things are tough 💐

Monkey sorry about more limbo, really hope the other offer comes though.

NCTDN I understand why you are worried but I think as with a lot of cities students stick to certain parts of it so it isn't as overwhelming as it could be if that makes sense?

NCTDN · 04/03/2022 18:40

Yes we're the same. DD got a card though today inviting her to an offer folder day next Saturday! Nothing like short notice. But she's already booked on one at Bristol that day... I'll get to see the city properly then!
singingstones · 04/03/2022 18:41

Monkey I hope he's taking that as a positive as much as he can - he's good enough, they want him, they just haven't got room yet. There will be lots of people firming and freeing up places over the next few weeks, I'm sure. But yet more waiting..

Do they tell you where on the list you are (do they even have an order)?

whatsnext2 · 04/03/2022 19:04

@scabby1

God to know @ EwwSprouts.

I’ve got to say, York’s PR is very impressive- golden tickets, lovely emails etc…..

Strange, totally the opposite of DD’s experience for English and Politics. She wasn’t allowed online visit days to both departments and was sent contradicting emails when she tried to follow up. No nice emails at all.
Monkey2001 · 04/03/2022 19:16

Thanks, no, he doesn't know where he is on the list. Hoping for more information soon.
OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 04/03/2022 19:21

Ooh @Monkey2001 fingers crossed that things get moving sooner rather than later!

Hope it a good day for all at Brum and York tomorrow!

Dd is firming Southampton, the course is infamous for allowing Jazz and Pop and that along with proximity tipped it for her. We were so impressed with Cardiff though. We also got a bribe from Surrey through the post a small aluminium water bottle !

Just a case of deciding insurance now. Possibly RHU or Sussex.

OP posts:
crazycrofter · 04/03/2022 19:26

Dd has had golden tickets and pointless postcards from York too! I’m hoping it’s a sign that the Psychology department is decent? We’ll see what she thinks tomorrow.

Well done to your ds on the waitlist place @Monkey2001- I hope the limbo doesn’t last too long.

They all use google maps these days anyway @NCTDN so don’t worry!

Dd did mocks in Oct, mini mocks in Dec, then proper ones now. She made such a drama this evening about her 3 hour RS exam and how tiring it was!

Monkey2001 · 04/03/2022 19:26

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant remember that she can put Cardiff as insurance - for my friend they were VERY flexible on results day!

Shimy · 04/03/2022 19:46

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant I concur with @Monkey2001, Cardiff is very flexible on results day. They dropped 2 grades for my DS1.

@Volterra Thanks for the flowers Smile.

Fiddlersgreen · 04/03/2022 20:13

We are visiting Cardiff tomorrow.
Interesting to know they can be flexible, offer is ABB but Jan mocks were BCC.
DS has more mocks in a few weeks and also had some Nov as well as the Jan ones just mentioned.
They’ve not been what I would call proper mocks though, just one paper per subject each time rather than the whole thing

22Newnames · 04/03/2022 22:16

Yey! We have an offer from Warwick! It came through at 5.30 this evening. Well DS does anyway but it feels like ‘us’ Smile
Offer is A*AA for the MEng with a dual offer of AAA for the BEng. He is very happy.

Just Bath and Durham to wait for now…

scabby1 · 04/03/2022 22:32
