Thread 26 - Covid Cohort Hoping for a Stable, Successful 2022

previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@AnneOfCleavage oh that’s a shame, I hope Oxford Brookes come through with an offer soon.

Just looking at our list of universities and Liverpool isn’t very popular is it? Dd says at her school most people seem to want to go to the big cities for the nightlife and Liverpool and Nottingham are the most popular. Looking at past years, a lot go to Manchester too.

ealingwestmum · 18/01/2022 20:04

Anne, it’s been such a full on run for her lately, it’s easy to get overwhelmed on the lessons missed/filling the gaps in learning.

A time out breather (I know, an oxymoron with their crazy schedules) may be what’s needed for her to refocus again. I hope an offer that gives her wiggle margin is forthcoming.

Wheresthebeach · 18/01/2022 20:15

Lovely offer Also.

The music kids seem to have so much extra to do. All credit to them.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 18/01/2022 20:40

I think we only have to submit one so far ! Sussex didn't interview, Surrey said they interview but didn't, RHU don't, Southampton send a video and then have a live interview, Cardiff is combined interview /audition taster day etc

I think Cardiff and Southampton have some type of performance scholarships...the rest just trust the grades!

Those with offer holder days booked, how did you find out about them? Hoping to visit Nottingham and Exeter, but no emails received from them so far (or so he says Hmm).
He's had an email from Aston but all of their stuff seems to be virtual.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 18/01/2022 20:45

I shall be VERY disappointed if those attending the Birmingham Offer Holder day aren't wearing a daffodil/ holding a rolled up copy of the times/ have a secret hand signal Wink

DS conceded that he might have got an email from Nottingham re an offer day. YES AND? fgs.

BlueMarigold · 18/01/2022 21:50

DD will be going the Birmingham offer holder day with DH. Shall I ask him to wear a daffodil?

crazycrofter · 18/01/2022 22:22

@singingstones dd had an email that seemed to suggest that she should have had an invitation to an offer holder day but she hadn’t so she emailed them and the invitation came the next day.

AnneOfCleavage · 18/01/2022 22:44

Well here's a turn up. Interview at Sussex ended after lunch today and she's had an offer already Shock BBB. We got an email weeks back saying they may well offer lower than stated but sadly they haven't as BBB was what they put on their course. We decided not to do any reach grade unis and just go for her predicted grades plus lower.

So just waiting on Ox Br to say yay or nay (assume if they say nay they do actually tell her) and for Chichester's F2F next week.

ealing we made a lemon drizzle cake this evening as I could see she needed a break so that was a lovely breather for her. Tasted yummy too. Wish I could pass some across to you all CakeCakeCake

Monkey2001 · 18/01/2022 22:52

Wow, that was quick AoC! Don't forget that for people on here the offer reductions have come after the standard/contextual offers.

ealingwestmum · 18/01/2022 22:54

That’s a lovely update for tonight Anne. Sometimes it’s the simplest (and lushest) things in life!

🤞 for OB coming through.

Zebracat · 18/01/2022 23:00

Ooh think I’m going to the Birmingham offer day. I thought some zebra print and cat earrings? Or leopard print and zebra earrings? I have none of that, but it would be fun shopping.

Heifer · 19/01/2022 00:26

wow this thread is filling up. Great news on more offers well done.

Loving the hockey chat on here. @EwwSprouts at Nottingham we looked at the National Hockey Centre (opposite the uni) before we looked at the uni! - DD was very impressed (5 pitches) plus there are more on campus itself (which no doubt DD will look at on the open day).

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn - I played GK for 40 yrs and only quit recently. It wasn't until I was in my mid 20s that I had enough confidence to stop worrying and thinking it was my fault - even when 50 I would get nervous but a good nervous. Best thing a captain every said to me was to remember that for someone to score against me they had to get past 10 other players first and that someone probably wasn't doing their job properly to even get to me (unmarked player etc). You do learn when it's was your fault or just a good goal and live with it. The best advice is to move on straight away if you make a mistake and don't think about it until after the match (easier said than done). It's the worst feeling in the world when you lost by 1 goal that you could /should have saved - but also the best feeling in the world when you know you've played well. Re moving onto mens teams - as long as he has good quality equipment it won't hurt but will take a little time to get used to the speed of their shots and his reflexes speed up so the ball may go into the net a little more often than usual at training to start with.

Those that haven't seen offer holder letters we found that some unis asked you to log into their portal (they supplied login in a letter) and we found more info in there. DD has only logged into York & Nottingham. Sheffield emailed inviting to open day the day after offer came through.

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2022 06:49

We haven't had anything from Sheffield!

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2022 06:58

By which I mean we have had an offer, signed on to their offer holders platform - but no mention of offer holder days. And it is the only one we haven't visited thus far.

Isthisjustnormal · 19/01/2022 07:07

Mad busy with work this week but just logging on to say I’m checking in and loving all the news from everyone! Congrats on all the offers and hockey acheievements everyone: sorry not to name check!

cariadambyth · 19/01/2022 07:36

Ooh, I’ve just woken up to find lots of lovely offers. What a nice start to the day, well done chaps.

Fiddlersgreen · 19/01/2022 07:59

@Piggywaspushed we also have an offer from Sheffield but no mention of offer holder days.
For us, it is the only one we have visited though

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/01/2022 08:26

@Heifer thank you for your post, I tell him that exact same thing - he is the last line of defence when no one else has stopped them so he doesn’t bear the responsibility any more than anyone else. After the matches I ask him to tell me what he did well and where did he make mistakes so he can learn. It’s quite good as he does it in a calm analytical way and not a beating himself up way. Everyone makes mistakes and he needs to acknowledge a good shot vs an error in keeping exactly as you say.
I think I do need to upgrade his central body protection as he’s grown quite a bit recently and also the chest pad seems a little thin to me. It’s sooooooo expensive though!

Congrats to the new offers!

Oblomov22 · 19/01/2022 13:39

Trying to decide what's best - all these fab offers, or AofC's Lemon Drizzle Cake.... Cake

AnneOfCleavage · 19/01/2022 15:09

Oblomov 😂 you're so funny. I mean it's definitely up there as it was so scrummy but hearing about all the offers coming in on this thread tops even DD's lemon drizzle. Here's hoping for more to come.

In keeping with the cake topic though does anyone have a fail safe recipe I can try to make the lemon-y sugar crunchy topping? Our one we used lemon juice and caster sugar and drizzled it on the cake as soon as it came out the oven as per BBC food recipe (they didn't specify quantities) but there was no crunch but boy was it lemony and delicious and moist.

That is a very mature attitude of your DS Popcorn to calmly analyse his tactics and try and learn from them. Well done to him.

kiwiandcherries · 19/01/2022 16:33

Have just found this thread as my dd has been having interviews for primary teaching degrees starting in September. It's so nice to find others who are on the same journey, worrying as much (if not more!) as their children and with heads swimming with all the facts. So much to take in - and decisions to be made!

ealingwestmum · 19/01/2022 16:47

Hello Kiwi!

I've just asked Mars (her lemon drizzle cakes were infamour here on MN back in the day) Yes I just called her an old timer ;-) Anyway this was her advice.

add extra sugar, don't fully dissolve it when making the topping

Hope that helps
