previous thread

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

His goalie coach keeps trying to make him train with the men now but he's a bit scared of how hard they hit! Grin

AnneOfCleavage · 18/01/2022 14:50

Wow busy week all round with driving tests, mocks etc. Hope it all goes well for all concerned.

Justherewithmypopcorn yes DD is very nervous for mocks results this Thursday at the parents Eve online portal meeting where she also has to attend with us. Her teachers are psyching them out so that is not helping. She is complaining of tummy ache and headaches so I'm sure it's nerves. So feel for the esp with the news saying exams are definitely going ahead this summer.

Another Uni interview under her belt completed today and an offer from Winchester. They said the points would be 112-120 so DD thought she just had to get 112 but they have asked for 120. She felt the interview went really well so I don't know if they have offered that to everyone or if they give 112 to the ones they REALLY want so she's a bit Confused

Monkey2001 · 18/01/2022 14:56

@AnneOfCleavage great news on the Chichester offer! Usually the lower number is contextual offers. There may well be flexibility on results day if she is worried about getting the grades. Does she already have points from her dance exams? DS already has 100 points!

Monkey2001 · 18/01/2022 14:57

Sorry meant Winchester, wrote Chichester!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/01/2022 15:00

@AnneOfCleavage sorry to hear your DD is stressing too but lovely news on the interview and offer. Agree with Monkey that the lower mark is probably for contextual offers.

DS has told me that they have been told they won't get their mock results now until 27th Jan as lots of people missed them due to Covid so still have to sit them.

Has there been a formal statement on the exams now then?

Horace123 · 18/01/2022 15:09

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn The current government line is still that students should expect to do exams in the summer but contingency plans are in place in case they can't take place. Because education has been disrupted there will be some modification to the summer exams for some subjects and this will be announced no later than 7 Feb.

AnneOfCleavage · 18/01/2022 15:28

Thanks for clarifying Monkey and Popcorn. Yes I guess that could mean contextual for which we are not eligible for. She is allowed up to 32 points for dance/ music exams (Winchester only as Chichester said no) but none of what she has done so far carries the point value. She's just done gold bar IDTA exam but not sure how comparable that is to say RADA grade 6. She's due to take her grade 4 Ballet but only from grade 6 do they count for UCAS. She's not been dancing long enough to ecru points. The Singing grades she's done only went up to grade 5 before she quit to concentrate on GCSEs as teacher was a bit useless. Same with LAMDA drama exams. 100 points is awesome though so well done Monkey's DS. Think 32 is about the cut off though but that and two A Levels lowers the pressure.

Horace seems we've read the same article. Think it was The Guardian but could have been i news. Can't find it to hand now but it was either yesterday or day before I read it. Not sure how I feel to be honest. Stressful either way.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/01/2022 15:57

Thanks @Horace123

@AnneOfCleavage that’s test that she already has some points achieved, agree that @Monkey2001 DS’s 100 points is fab.

EwwSprouts · 18/01/2022 16:25

Who knew so many hockey parents were on here? I agree with ED that when they move into the men's teams there is generally a lot of support. DS has worked his way up through the teams and now knows most of the club which is lovely.

@Heifer Will be interesting to see how many attend the open days. I shall listen intently to see if anyone mentions how far the hockey pitches are from the biology building!

Popcorn I hope the match went well. I was chatting to one of our referees the other week and he started out as a goalie. He qualified as a referee at 17 as he was always the second choice goalie. He still gets the fun and reckons it paid his bar bill through college.

Nard75 · 18/01/2022 16:55

Good luck to everyone who is waiting for mock exam results. For those who are going on offer holder days at Birmingham University can DC take 1 guest with them?

Wheresthebeach · 18/01/2022 17:21

Congrats on the offer Anne

I no longer know what to hope for re: exams!

Fonty · 18/01/2022 17:29

@Wheresthebeach Yes 1 guest for Birmingham offer day. (Although DS did say quite happily to me that there was no requirement to even take 1 guest)……

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/01/2022 17:37

Just picked up DS from his match (long journey back!), they lost by one goal but DS said the team were nice to him. Apparently the last time they played that team they lost 13-4 so the much smaller scores/losses were a relief!

ExtremelyDetermined · 18/01/2022 17:57

Phew!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 18/01/2022 18:01

This group has worked it’s strange magic again - DD has an offer from Birmingham, her top choice! Grin
AAB, which is what she’s predicted, so fingers crossed, mock results will be in the right direction.

Congratulations on the Winchester offer, Anne.

singingstones · 18/01/2022 18:04

Yay Also, congrats to her!

Fonty · 18/01/2022 18:17

That’s brilliant @Alsoplayspiccolo. This group is amazing! Well done @AnneOfCleavage for Winchester & also Popcorn on the hockey results/nice opposition team!

EwwSprouts · 18/01/2022 18:23

@Alsoplayspiccolo that is spooky but excellent news!

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Hurrah. Teams need to remember no goalie no team!

@AnneOfCleavage Congratulations on the offer. Hope it boosts her confidence.

ProggyMat · 18/01/2022 18:24

Yay! Well done to @singingstones DS and @AnneOfCleavage and @Alsoplayspiccolo DDs!
Sending positive vibes to all sitting mocks or waiting for mock results

Piggywaspushed · 18/01/2022 18:31

DS in the middle of mocks : only three exams in total so a bit limiting but his second set.

I have a day off on Friday (thankyou your maj) so am looking forward to taking him for lunch.

Still waiting for Bath here.... (and Cambridge obviosly)

AnneOfCleavage · 18/01/2022 18:31

JustHereWithMyPopcorn eek, actually she hasn't got any points as she hasn't done the grades high enough that allows them. She's hoping to hear from Oxford Brookes soon as that is her insurance Uni and she really liked the sound of the course - they study a Musical Theatre module apparently as part of the teaching syllabus. Your DS must be very proud of that match.

Amazing offer Alsoplayspiccolo well done to your DD 😀

crazycrofter · 18/01/2022 19:00

Great news @Alsoplayspiccolo, there might be a few of the dc in this group heading my way in September! Hope her mocks are encouraging.

Good news on DD’s offer too @AnneOfCleavage. It does seem misleading when they quote the range as starting with contextual offers. 120 points is 2xB isn’t it? Is that achievable for her?

AnneOfCleavage · 18/01/2022 19:17

crazycrofter it's 3 x B and 3 Bs is what she is predicted so we wanted some wiggle room as she's had no sociology teacher since before term ended last term and what with each interview taking out an entire school day (so 5 days - her interviews always fell on full lesson days so lots of missed content) she is trying to catch up on missed lessons, complete homework and do independent study and it's taking its toll. Hoping for BCC to be perfectly honest.

So offers so far: Bristol UWE want BBC
Winchester want BBB

ealingwestmum · 18/01/2022 19:19

@ProggyMat

Yay! Well done to *@singingstones DS and @AnneOfCleavage and @Alsoplayspiccolo* DDs! Sending positive vibes to all sitting mocks or waiting for mock results
Likewise, so good to hear the offers coming in!

All quiet here, other than at the 11th hour DD cobbling together a 15 mins violin audio for her only US application (no need to to add it to the list Singing, it's likely to be a rejection) Such polar opposite though to UK submissions where no one cares about any extra curricular in the scheme of things. Was a challenge following her steroid shoulder treatment, but they delayed processing her app to allow her to include which was nice. I do feel for you musical parents having to submit multiple audios for your DDs' music applications Orange and Paddington. So stressful!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/01/2022 19:20

@AnneOfCleavage oh I'm so sorry, I clearly misread that info Blush. Still fingers crossed that she gets the OB offfer.

Thanks for the cheer for DS2, he's not crying so all good as far as I'm concerned! Grin

DS1 still waiting for three unis, feels like its dragging now.
