Thread 23 Covid Cohort Stepping Into Christmas, Tests, Mocks & Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/11/2021 18:33

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@crazycrofter Could you pls say your magic words to ask me that question, perhaps DS will hear from Warwick?Grin

Seeline · 24/11/2021 15:01

Brilliant news on offers and interviews!!

Pleased to hear that final choices are down to individual students, and not controlled by schools.

estherfrewen · 24/11/2021 15:18

@Isthisjustnormal - fab news - spooky mumsnet timing again! DS history interview is 10 December, two interviews both morning. He has mocks that week too. Roll on 5pm that Friday...

Fruitygal · 24/11/2021 15:28

Offer from Exeter today for DD for Zoology AAB or if she gets A in EPQ AND firms it ABB (given it was in clearing last year with BBC and is her insurance it won’t be going first) and York is still her favourite if Durham don’t offer.

crazycrofter · 24/11/2021 15:37

Fingers crossed Warwick send that offer soon @Shimy!

@estherfrewen good news, but that sounds like a busy week, bet you can't wait for it to be over. At least you can relax over Christmas!

Nice to have another offer @Fruitygal, I think York would be my favourite too (although to be fair I've visited the city far more times and more recently than I've visited Exeter, so perhaps not fair!). I also liked Durham when we went last summer.

Shimy · 24/11/2021 15:38

Thanks @crazycrofter Wink.

Congrats to all those getting offers.

BlueMarigold · 24/11/2021 15:39

DD just came home and told me her personal statement is ready and can I help her fill in the rest of the application so we can submit it to the school!

Fruitygal · 24/11/2021 15:44

@BlueMarigold - it will only take an hour if you’ve done everything else! Hopefully they can send then it on Friday or Monday? If they’ve done the reference etc

BlueMarigold · 24/11/2021 15:46

I hope we don’t have Personal statement formatting issue but we have already filled in most of the form. I have to pay for it. It’s feeling very real now.

Fruitygal · 24/11/2021 15:48

@crazycrofter yes York and Durham are in top spots and lovely places (if she gets an offer from Durham) and Sheffield (also waiting) would be the reserve spot after that. We shall see - wasn’t expecting Exeter until after Christmas so that’s good it’s in now.

@estherfrewen congratulations on the interviews how exciting

ealingwestmum · 24/11/2021 15:52

Great to get Exeter in Fruitygal

Fruitygal · 24/11/2021 16:11

@ealingwestmum she’s pleased she’s got three now and it’s an early offer for them but it’s always your favourite that is going to be last 😂 don’t think Durham will send out any offers before end of January (fingers crossed she gets one) - luckily she has her offer day booked for York the day after the 2nd set of mocks in January so she’ll get a chance to have a proper look round before a response either way from Durham.

mummyinbeds · 24/11/2021 16:42

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn congrats to your DS on the Birmingham offer. That's looking like DS's first choice at the moment. He received a rejection from Oxford today. It was always a long shot and he gave it a go...he's still fuming about the LNAT.

Piggywaspushed · 24/11/2021 16:49

Wow, offers piling in ! Well done all those DCs!

DoggerelBank · 24/11/2021 16:52

@Isthisjustnormal Brilliant!

Fruitygal · 24/11/2021 16:54

@mummyinbeds sorry about the rejection - it’s super tough but Birmingham is excellent

Isthisjustnormal · 24/11/2021 17:00

Lots of good news on here at the mo :-) But sorry to hear your ds’s news @mummyinbeds: how’s he feeling? Brum was my nearest big town growing up: lovely town and I imagine fab for students!

Shimy · 24/11/2021 17:22

@mummyinbeds Sending commiserations re: Oxford rejection. Anyone who even goes through the whole application process for Oxbridge without giving up is a winner in my eyes and is sure to be snapped up by another good uni. I know they don't want to hear that right now but in time, hope he will look back and see how well he did.

mummyinbeds · 24/11/2021 17:24

Thanks @Fruitygal and @isthisjustnormal

He reckons it's Oxfords loss 🤣 He's happy with the idea of Birmingham. I actually think it will be far more enjoyable than Oxford would have been and much more him. He's too laid back and disorganised for the stress of Oxbridge.

ealingwestmum · 24/11/2021 17:27

Great attitude he has mummyinbeds, good for him.

ZittiEBuoni · 24/11/2021 17:29

Sorry to hear it's a no from Oxford mummyinbeds but I had one of the greatest weekends of my student life visiting friends at Birmingham University - would definitely have it on my list if I was given a second chance.

Congrats to everyone getting their offers in.

Monkey2001 · 24/11/2021 17:34

@mummyinbeds sorry he didn't get an interview, but as a veteran of Cambridge applications, the emotional rollercoaster of post interview rejection is even worse. The Oxbridge colleges make you fall in love with them then spit you out! Birmingham is indeed an excellent university where he will meet loads of clever and interesting people, glad he is happy.

ealingwestmum · 24/11/2021 17:40

I think you’re right of the past Monkey, but anecdotally here, perhaps less so with all interviews online. Less invested, and lack of visiting has played the process down heaps in our household. Thankfully.

Nard75 · 24/11/2021 17:40

Congratulations to everyone on interviews and offers. Hope DC aren't too disappointed with rejections most things work out for the best in the end and I'm sure they will all thrive wherever they end up.

mummyinbeds · 24/11/2021 17:45

@Monkey2001 I think I was more in love with the beautiful colleges than he was but he did like the idea of the Harry Potter dining halls.

Birmingham rejected me after interview back in the day. I had the flu and probably came across like a startled rabbit in the headlights. But I did go to uni and loved every minute of it. Everything happens for a reason.
