Thread 23 Covid Cohort Stepping Into Christmas, Tests, Mocks & Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 12/11/2021 18:33

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Seeline I've never known of schools controlling what offers the DCs firm and insure. In our experience, schools only get a look-in if DC asks specifically for advice.

Monkey2001 · 24/11/2021 12:30

School has no control over what you firm and insure. Once they have submitted it they have view only access and the applicant is the only one who can select and withdraw

crazycrofter · 24/11/2021 12:42

Dd is likely to get contextual offers of either one or two grades lower from all her unis, so I reckon they'll all be in the region AAB to BBB. She's not planning to put a proper 'banker' with really low grades, so all her unis will be much of a muchness in terms of 'prestige'. I was going to tell her just to firm her favourite after offers days, even if it's not her highest offer and not worry too much about an insurance. My friend's daughter only had AAA offers and no insurance. In the end she got BBB and still got into Nottingham through clearing, so it doesn't seem to matter too much? Unless we think there won't be much availability in clearing this year?

PaddingtonPaddington · 24/11/2021 12:57

Finally 4 weeks after audition and interview DD has an offer for Leeds Conservatoire for classical music! As she only applied to 2 places so she’s thrilled. RWCMD have not got back to her yet after her interview but we have heard of others with offers so thinking that’s probably a rejection but still hoping as it was her favourite.
Think we might head back to Leeds for more of a look round as we were both half asleep having left at 3.30am to get there and had to head straight back after so DD could get to a party.

estherfrewen · 24/11/2021 12:58

That's great news @PaddingtonPaddington!

DoggerelBank · 24/11/2021 13:08

Whoop whoop, mini Paddington! Wonderful news!!

ZittiEBuoni · 24/11/2021 13:16

Brilliant, PaddingtonPaddington!

Volterra · 24/11/2021 13:26

Excellent news PaddingtonPadddington!

crazycrofter · 24/11/2021 13:28

Well done @PaddingtonPaddington dd!

BlueMarigold · 24/11/2021 13:34

Great news @PaddingtonPaddington!

ealingwestmum · 24/11/2021 13:34

So pleased for her Paddington!

Monkey2001 · 24/11/2021 13:51

Great news @PaddingtonPaddington. Do conservatoires still offer EE?

Shimy · 24/11/2021 14:08

Great news @PaddingtonPaddington They don't hand out those on a plate.

Shimy · 24/11/2021 14:11

@Seeline 'Argue it at school'? she doesn't have to argue anything, it's totally her choice.

Shimy · 24/11/2021 14:17

I wouldn't take a gamble like that this yr. Nottingham and others are much sought after unis and all indications from this cohort are pointing to stiff competition. Of course there will always be Clearing spaces in lower tariff unis (some terrific offers last yr) but it could be a mistake banking on the more popular ones.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 24/11/2021 14:19

Wonderful news @paddingtonpaddington! 🎼🎻

Hooray Paddington.

crazycrofter · 24/11/2021 14:21

Yes, I’m sure you’re right. If dd is predicted AAA* I’m thinking she doesn’t need an insurance lower than BBB?

When are the Oxford and Cambridge interviews happening? I know @Piggywaspushed ds has one, who else is there?

Isthisjustnormal · 24/11/2021 14:27

Wonderful news @PaddingtonPaddington!! Congrats! @crazycrofter: Ds is Cambridge applicant. No new and I think he’s slight despondent as a mate has heard (for the same course!) He knew it was a flyer and actually isn’t very set on Cambridge but think it’s still depressing him a bit. Tears (although not officially Cambridge related) last night…

Isthisjustnormal · 24/11/2021 14:37

Ha: you lot are a good luck charm just by existing- ds just heard he’s got a Cambridge interview Smile

ZittiEBuoni · 24/11/2021 14:48

isthisjustnormal, there does seem to be some spooky energy coming off the thread! Great news for your ds - he can put away the tissues and crack open the worry beads Grin.

ealingwestmum · 24/11/2021 14:53

Loving the coincidental timing on here! Fab news isthisnormal!

Shimy · 24/11/2021 14:53

@Isthisjustnormal That is wonderful news, oh! the kiddos on here are all so bright.

On another entirely unrelated note:

Pls does anyone know what the latest version of MS Office is and what the last 3 versions before that were, same questions also about Windows operating system. Thanks.

ealingwestmum · 24/11/2021 14:53

Sorry for missing the just!

crazycrofter · 24/11/2021 14:59

Fantastic @Isthisjustnormal! Glad I asked Grin.
