Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@crazycrofter I think it's brilliant that she feels that way. That's what work experience is all about. Sometimes our career choices aren't based on well grounded, researched and critiqued ideas, sometimes it's just a spontaneous moment and we just know it's the right thing.

crazycrofter · 13/10/2021 13:24

Yes I agree and she does sound suddenly enthusiastic which is great! I'm so glad she got this work experience. Feel really sorry for last year's lot who missed out due to covid.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/10/2021 14:22

@crazycrofter that's great that she knows what she wants to do. Either of those are good jobs go into. The work experience must help a lot. Ds2 wants to do a history degree...I often think it doesn't lead to a specific job.

crazycrofter · 13/10/2021 14:31

@icanbewhatiwant I did a history degree! I’m now a tax accountant… but my whole family (5 siblings) did history of some sort as did my mum, my dh and brother in law. Between us there’s 3 ministers Grin, 2 accountants, a teacher, an archivist and a UN counter terrorism specialist. So it’s a good degree for keeping doors open!

icanbewhatiwant · 13/10/2021 15:01

@crazycrofter Wow...lots of historians! That's good to hear. Ds2 wants to do history with philosophy. Ds1 is doing biology (third year) But apparently doesn't want to work in a lab! So I don't know what direction he will go in next.

Zebracat · 13/10/2021 15:02

@crazycrofter. Well done to your Dd. I think it sounds a good fit for her, based on your previous posts. Also really pleased to hear about your family of historians, and their varied careers.we got some feedback from critical readers on the Personal statement and both suggest changes that aren’t easy because the candidate can’t see it , but they are right. She’s also spent days writing her own proposal for her NEA, the school having rejected her 1st proposal. She went off ready to argue her case today and i idly googled her title, only to find there was a whole televised series on it recently that covers precisely the same ground ! So it willlook like blatant plagiarism, although it really wasn’t. I think she will have to change. I am expecting it to be a very long evening here. There may be, tears. We break for half term on Friday so it really has all to be sorted tonight.

EerilyDisembodied · 13/10/2021 15:28

Good to hear all the history careers, that's what DS is applying for too, and DD may well in a couple of years. No one in either of our families has ever studied it (DH and I did science degrees, our parents/siblings either didn't go to uni or did business studies, art, teacher training, English).

@AnneOfCleavage thanks re Sussex, I have used DS's email to chase them up, we want to visit a couple of people on the way back and it would be helpful to have timings now.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/10/2021 16:01

@AnneOfCleavage if Sussex do a similar timetable to a couple of weeks ago then I'm sure the last talks were at 12.30pm. But there were tours and people to chat to until 3pm. For us there were 4 talks we wanted to listen to all at 9.30am. So obviously we could only do one. So we went to the history talk. Then philosophy was straight after. Due to the monsoon conditions we left at 11.30am

Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2021 16:18

Oh, crazy that sounds good!

I do like being called an expertmonkey. Grin

crazycrofter · 13/10/2021 16:30

I’m hoping she’ll let me take her to the Leicester open day in November - they do joint child/mental health, so I’m not sure if it’s her bag. But I went to Leicester and I’d love to visit it!!

EerilyDisembodied · 13/10/2021 16:31

That's the other thing we need to know about Sussex @icanbewhatiwant, what time do we need to get there, we are 90 mins drive away and DS normally does a paper round at 7.30. DD is off on her DofE practice expedition on Saturday too. It's going to be a busy day for our family.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/10/2021 16:46

@EerilyDisembodied this was 2 weeks ago...

I have a list of subject talks too. I would have thought it would be the same this time.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/10/2021 16:51

It says both dates on the front. So will be the same this weekend.

Heifer · 13/10/2021 17:15

Crazy - sounds great - nothing wrong with her changing her mind based on experience rather than some posts on snap chat etc! although I get somewhat AHHHH for you at the same time.

DD has discovered a job she really likes the sound of - Clinical Scientest, thankfully her Biology course will be a good fit.

@Piggywaspushed - I definitely see you as an expert - I even mentioned you in real life the other day but had to stop myself saying Piggywaspushed said .... because you know that does sound weird.

I wonder what else in RL you lot are experts at?? :-)

Crazy's UN Counter Terrorism expert relative probably trumps all, but not as useful on this particular thread as English/Film

Eerily we didn't get to Sussex Uni until after 11am but got straight in and parked in top car park - Marshall's we're around showing you where to go.
It opens at 9am I believe and finishes at 3.30pm. It was horrendous getting out at 3.30pm as all the car parks empty and it took ages to get to the entrance. I'd avoid turning up right at the beginning for that reason or leaving it to very the end. Our course talks were at 10.30 and 12.30 so we missed the first one but made the 2nd one. Didn't attend any others as weather so dire. We visited a family member who goes there so had a mini tour with them and a leisurely lunch. Got to see one of the accommodation blocks as she knew people there. Really would love to go back in nicer weather conditions to see it properly and visit Brighton too but not this weekend. If DD gets an offer we'll do it then as she has to interview in person.

Wheresthebeach · 13/10/2021 18:22

So...DD now thinking of a Gap Year. We've talked around it a bit, but suddenly she's thinking about it seriously.

Does anyone know how/if it affects the offers she'll get? If she asks for deferred and they don't want to give her that option will they still offer for this year or will she just get rejected?

Gah....
@crazycrofter Nice to have a plan based on work experience!

Haha!

Sometimes I think I am called Piggy...

Alsoplayspiccolo · 13/10/2021 18:31

crazy, that’s a really exciting change of heart from your DD! Definitely worth pursuing what appeals as a future career, rather than something you think you fit but aren’t as passionate about.

Piggy, you are my go-to expert for English and film, absolutely Smile
Any thoughts on the Exeter course, which adds in tv? I looked at it last night, but didn’t think it sounded as gripping as either S’ton or Birmingham (or maybe it was just the way it was set out on their website? Blush)

crazycrofter · 13/10/2021 18:34

@Monkey2001 my UN brother isn’t terribly useful actually as he’s sworn to secrecy so I don’t hear anything! The only time he was allowed to say anything about his job was when he travelled to Afghanistan and was allowed to tell our parents!

@Piggywaspushed I’m not sure which is worse - piggy or crazy?!

If only you knew! Let’s just say I’ve wasted today trying to get accurately quoted in a number of major newspapers. Why, after being given 3 days of access and an actual written document of what I think, do they just make stuff up?! Grrr
Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2021 18:34

Exeter has a good reputation for film - but that course doesn't look nearly as much fun as Soton's!

Warwick and Lancaster are always considered the best : has she looked at them?

Delphigirl · 13/10/2021 18:34

Anyway now I need to catch up on this thread so back soon

crazycrofter · 13/10/2021 18:36

Ugh @Delphigirl I can only imagine! I really don’t think they should be called newspapers anymore, as ‘news’ somehow suggests they’re reporting actual facts…
