Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Hope you are ok Monkey . I'd heard that about the tests and SW.

Monkey2001 · 11/10/2021 19:45

Thanks Orange, I am fine, just frustrated. This morning I phoned DH at 7:30 (currently in DS1's room) to remind him that DS2 needed to be at school at 8:30. Heard limited movement, phoned him again at 7:45 and he said they were both too tired to get up. I had to explain that "too tired" is not an acceptable reason for absence, particularly after a very quiet Sunday, and if both had negative results he had to go to school! I am still dithering about my uncle's funeral, but think I can't go until both LFT and PCR are negative.

Ooh, whoami that sounds exciting. Has she been practicing for the tests or did she have to do it "cold"?

OP posts:
stoneysongs · 11/10/2021 19:48

I think I saw another thread where the OP was getting faint +ve LFTs but -ve PCRs. Not sure which would be worse, Covid which evades PCRs or a new virus which looks like it to the point of +ve LFTs but isn't it. In any case bad luck Monkey.

Fingers crossed for your DD whoami
If she gets a place, how long is the training? Do they learn a lot of it on the job or is it mostly on the ground until she's finished? I am fascinated by cabin crew - we flew a lot when I was little as DF was in the army and they just seemed like the most impossibly glamorous people. And now that I am grown up and a bit scared of flying, I watch them carefully - I know I'm ok ad long as they look relaxed.

ProggyMat · 11/10/2021 20:00

@Volterra yes well done Bristol!
Often the chat around Bristol is about contextual offers and doesn’t highlight the fact that they offer a first year accommodation bursary and a maintenance bursary for low income families- regardless of which sector the student has been educated in, on a means tested basis
I’ve just discovered the assistance available to actually visit via DDs confirmation of application.
Hopefully more universities offer such help.
The honesty of Edinburgh’s projections about applications only confirms what I thought our Corona Cohort would face.
Scary, nonetheless Shock

Wheresthebeach · 11/10/2021 20:13

Oh take care @Monkey2001

crazycrofter · 11/10/2021 20:15

Great news for your dd @whoamitojudge, I hope she’s successful. Sorry to hear about the Covid/not Covid @Monkey2001. How much longer should you be isolating?

Dd had her first day of work experience today and she seems pretty positive. The only negative was the OT telling her how full on the course is compared to other degrees!

AnneOfCleavage · 11/10/2021 20:20

ealing I laughed out loud at that 😂🤣 but seriously 60,000 applicants 😲😲

icanbe I really hope our school don't hang into the PS /UCAS forms til January after making them hand them in by 11th (today) 😲I'm not sure DD's my nerves would hold up.

Can we watch that program on BBCiplayer Piggy? Assume it's finished now so on catch up - is it a series? Yes I agree that it is not a default vocation or a last resort degree. I've said for years "Are you sure" or "Auntie So and So wants to change jobs as she's finding teaching sooooo hard" but she is adamant. She's done volunteering in years R-4 so far and by far prefers the older ones. Currently doing year 4 for a term. Needs to do yrs 5 and 6 to get the full set so prob next two terms after Christmas.
Interestingly only Sussex offer Primary any Early Years combined as a course and her other choices make you choose between Early Years and Primary 1-6. She's chosen 1-6 as found Reception quite hard as not as structured - DD loves a routine 😂

Monkey all the PS tips online and from her teachers have categorically said not to say the "I have always wanted to be a..." line as it's such a cliche and they have read it a lot so it doesn't stand out. I guess she could have worded it in a different way but or she could always say it if she gets to the interview stage. There wasn't a particular lightbulb moment as far as I'm aware but mid Primary school age she said that's what she wanted to be. She had some lovely teachers so maybe that's the reason. Even went as a class to a teacher's wedding.
When is your Uncle's funeral? Unfortunately LFTs often show positive for a long time after hence why we aren't asked to do them for volunteering for 3 mths after COVID - we have to do a LFT before each shift and show the staff a pic of it. It may be worth doing another PCR 5 days before funeral (if you feel well and symptoms gone) just so you can show people you are negative.

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2021 20:31

Yes it's on IPlayer.

DeadlineLooming · 11/10/2021 21:11

Sorry for ambushing this wonderful thread for entirely selfish reasons. I'm reposting this from a thread I've just started on Scotsnet. Apologies to those who will find it dull and irrelevant - please feel free to skip. BUT if you can help me I will be so grateful! In one of my many other name changes piggywaspushed was very helpful in particular I seem to remember! Here's what I put on Scotsnet:

Sorry for the slightly panicked title and what's going to a bit of a long one. I'm going to put this in Education as well but I know there are some good Scottish teachers on here like Lidl and...( struggles to remember names of any more but know s that there are LOADS!)

I'm a serial namechanger and have been on here for years and know that aurea has a child at Oxford and she's been very helpful in the past.

So my dilemma. My son is applying to Oxford and the deadline for entries is October 15th at 6pm. Miraculously he put his UCAS in last Thursday 7th October with all his other 4 options so he was feeling well ahead of the game. He wants to study PPE and needs to take a Thinking Skills Assessment test. These are usually held at registered centres and some of these are schools. His state secondary in Glasgow is not a test centre so he's been told that he and the handful of other Oxbridge entrants will be doing their various entrance tests at Glasgow's 'presenting centre organised through St Roch's Secondary'.

I'd been reading everywhere things on the official Cambridge (it does Oxford too it's just got a confusing name!) TSA site like:

"Please note that school error will not be taken into consideration if the deadline for registering for these tests is missed, so make sure you check that you have been registered and have your candidate entry number before the 15 October deadline"

So I have been asking my DS if he has proof of registration and/or a candidate number for a few weeks and he's asked his teachers and says he's had lots of reassurance that everything is in order. That it's going to be happening at St Rochs, not to worry etc... But nothing in writing and after reading the above, I thought, I would really like to have that candidate number in my possession.

Friday was an Inset day at my son's school and now it's half term but I managed to speak to a pastoral care teacher on the phone who has been dealing with my son's UCAS application and explained what I wanted. She spoke to a teacher who apparently had put all the applications in to the test centre and more reassuring noises were made.

I followed up the phone call with an email to the Head teacher who kindly emailed me back (she's lovely) and said that this year is slightly different in Glasgow as they have a presenting centre organised through St Roch's Secondary. She also said that they "had written confirmation in an email that DS and our entries from XX school have been received by the centre." She said they had sent an email to the Centre asking for specific details but had not got a reply yet (this was Friday afternoon). Nothing came through today but it is only Monday.

I am now getting a bit anxious. I phoned up a TSA information line this morning (the first thing they asked for was my candidate number!) and gave them my son's details but they could not find any record of him but then they couldn't find any record of St Rochs being a test centre either - they only had one Glasgow test centre and that was near George Square in Glasgow.

Does anyone here know whether St Rochs is a test centre and if I can even get hold of them during half term? Is there only one St Rochs Secondary in Glasgow? More generally, is it common for Head Teachers to be checking their school emails regularly during a Half Term? If I can't get through to the school, what should I do next? What would you do next in my shoes? I don't know any of the teachers personally so can't make a cheeky phone call.

I just want to say that the school have been wonderful in supporting my son through his application. They've really worked hard and put in the time with him. Which is just as well as he didn't get any mentoring through schemes for State school pupils like Clydeside, even though he applied. And we put our names down for schemes like Scotland for Oxford and didn't hear anything back either. We didn't hear about UNIQ until it was too late - that's the pandemic for you. But he's spent so much time watching helpful videos on Oxford Uni's website and working really hard to get his reference up to scratch. It's a really aspirational punt on his part that came out of the blue for us (who went to dodgy Polytechnics many, many moons ago!) I'd hate for it to be scuppered by an admin error.

It might all be fine of course and I'm panicking unneccessarily but I just want to have his candidate number and know that all is present and correct. I can't imagine what he would do if he didn't even get as far as taking the TSA test after all the work he's put it.

And again, the school have been brilliant but they don't have many kids apply to Oxbridge - three or four a year and some years less? They've obviously done it before but they have never had anyone apply for PPE before so they might not have done the TSA route?

If you've read this far, thank you. If you can help in anyway, thanks even more Smile

Sorry if I’m being a bit slow. Does the Edinburg 60,000 applicants refer to all courses for 1st year? And what is a normal year like application-wise?

Monkey2001 · 11/10/2021 21:45

@DeadlineLooming speak to Admissions at your Cambridge college. They are really helpful and may tell you that if there was a whole centre error it would be different from one child failing to fill in the school form signing up for a test There weren't definitely issues last year when some schools couldn't get the tests to work.

OP posts:
Monkey2001 · 11/10/2021 21:46

I meant there were issues last year

Thanks to all that relied to posts - I have just sent an email to the 2 Biology teachers. @Monkey2001 I did go back and find your information so many thanks for remind me about that. I don't know if they will reconsider or not, but I am sure they hate receiving emails asking but as someone pointed out if you don't ask you don't get and DD will know I've tried to help her.

Talking of DD, she has justs booked a flight to Spain along with 9 friends after their exams!! They are going to a friends place so that isn't quite so scary... as DH said, it's the best we could hope for really for her first holiday away from us, with no adults etc..

I am going to go back and catch up with all your news now as seems a lot of posts since I posted yesterday. Hopefully some good news in there and hopefully some people have found some help like I have.

Heifer · 12/10/2021 07:39

Thankfully there are a lot less typos in my email to the school than that of my post below!!!

Monkey2001 · 12/10/2021 08:17

The second vaccine I booked for DS was cancelled before I went in to cancel, somebody must have realised that the system had let young people book 2 jabs.

I’m sure it’s been asked before, but where can I find out which courses were in clearing for specific uni’s in previous years?

Shimy · 12/10/2021 09:21

Thanks for tagging me in @Monkey2001, even though it’s 4 pages in!

Seeline · 12/10/2021 09:56

DDs UCAS still not been submitted by school! Not sure why they made such a fuss about having them all by 23/9 if they take this long to do the final button pushing. It's not as though DDs PS was unseen by them - her form tutor looked at it twice and 2 other members of staff had a look too! I know she isn't one of the required early submission students, but it's very frustrating knowing how hard she worked to get it ready for their deadline.

Monkey2001 · 12/10/2021 10:02

My DS's medicine one hasn't gone yet either. I assume some people miss deadlines and they want to send them all off together. There is a new progression coordinator after a load of maternity leave shuffles, but I am sure it will be ok. Seeline maybe yours had the same policy of keeping it in-house as long as possible in case of changes.

OP posts:
Wheresthebeach · 12/10/2021 10:31

DD's PS is all done, but references being worked on. Its quite frustrating as they asked for PS by August 10th.

Solidarity with the 'please get a wiggle on' so we can get everything in, and hopefully some offers.

@Delphigirl Great news about Plymouth. We are going on Nov 6th for open day - Marine Biology is DD's dream

Oblomov21 · 12/10/2021 12:27

What are the rules. I know each school has the Oxbridge deadline. And the Jan 26th deadline for everyone else.

But can you request early submission?

I know my Ds1 wants his submitted asap. By October 1/2 term preferably.

Monkey2001 · 12/10/2021 12:41

You can submit any time from when UCAS opens, which was a few weeks ago. It is schools managing their workload which means that they prioritise early entry.

OP posts:
Heifer · 12/10/2021 14:15

A friend has just said her DDs school have sent them all off without telling them beforehand they were going to! She was expecting some more comments about her PS but it's just been accepted and sent off yesterday (medicine).
