Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Dd brought the university subject up in the car today so I engaged. She also likes the idea of Nottingham @Piggywaspushed as she says loads of her friends from school/old school/outside school are applying. She said it sounded really nice, but hasn’t actually visited! I wonder what it is about it that’s so appealing?

I also hope the exams go ahead. I hate the way their grades are devalued by people if they’ve not sat exams.

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2021 18:03

Friendship groups do seem to have an impact, yes. Nottingham is good though, anyway!

BlueMarigold · 20/10/2021 18:10

@crazycrofter Nottingham campus is just so pretty! There’s a lake and you can go boating. Looks amazing.

Heifer · 20/10/2021 18:19

I didn't think it was that special tbh ( I preferred York) - but don't have an issue with DD wanting to go there - at least it's good (even if not a high up on the league table as some DD just won't even look at (Lancaster)...

DD definitely influenced by what she has read and who has been there already.

ealingwestmum · 20/10/2021 18:33

Still no visits here Crazy. Zero. Nada. Can’t see that changing either before any offers (if any come through)!

ProggyMat · 20/10/2021 18:37

Ditto!
Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2021 18:40

The boating is fun, if, unlike me, you don't keep going in circles...

BlueMarigold · 20/10/2021 19:32

@Heifer DD wasn’t interested in York but loves the variety of modules at Lancaster.

icanbewhatiwant · 20/10/2021 20:10

I thought I'd make you laugh...I always say Ds2 is small. He's dressing up for charity tomorrow. He's going as Austin powers. Annoyingly his wig didn't arrive. But he ordered the glasses, lace thing for his wrists and neck. He needed a jacket, dh and ds1 had nothing small enough..so he's wearing one of mine...ladies next, size 10 🤣 it's a bit big, with slight shoulder pads, I wonder who will notice 🤣

ealingwestmum · 20/10/2021 20:25

Brilliant ican Smile

I know this is a huge generalisation, you mentioned you were into horses once upon a time...he does sound like the perfect jockey physique!

icanbewhatiwant · 20/10/2021 20:30

@ealingwestmum yes...he'd have been a great size for a jockey. I should think he weighs about 7 stone. I didn't get them into horse riding though. We had 4 stables at the farm when they were growing up too (we moved from the farm 3 years ago when dh retired)

Monkey2001 · 20/10/2021 21:34

I am dwelling on what @Delphigirl said about the possibility of no exams. DS thinks he would like it, but I think the loss of control of your destiny would be hard. The only positive I can see is that if 1 subject lets you down, lots of universities hold your offer open if you can get the grades in the autumn exams.

Does anyone know whether you can see your predicted grades on UCAS? We realised that we were not sure what his final grades were, just knew they were good enough.

Brilliant @icanbewhatiwant 😂😂

Sorry to hear yours aren’t interested in visits @ealingwestmum and @ProggyMat! Are they otherwise engaging in thinking about next year or not?!

BlueMarigold · 20/10/2021 21:43

@Monkey2001 My DD told me today that at school you have a one to one session with a teacher who puts in the predicted grades in front of you and you can read the references they wrote to make sure you’re happy.

ealingwestmum · 20/10/2021 22:04

All good re next year’s course aspirations Crazy. The lack of visits are mainly schedule driven and not wanting to get too invested in anywhere in particular; I think I self-preservation thing in case she doesn’t get in.

Monkey2001 · 20/10/2021 22:24

Thanks @BlueMarigold I find it really odd that you can't see the predictions your referee has ACTUALLY entered. DS thinks he is predicted 2xA*+ A, no idea whether there is an EPQ prediction, but probably not. I just think it is strange that you can't see either the grades or the reference for your own application. I know that you could phone UCAS and ask them to send a copy of your reference, I assume you can also ask them to send your predictions, but you shouldn't have to!
@Fiddlersgreen Most subject talks will be 1hr approx. Plus a chance to ask questions. If you have the am talk worth getting up early and doing the SU tour before the talk and accommodation tour afterwards. Allowing 2-4hrs if doing the tour, talk, accommodation and lunch. We did Lancaster and back down south in one day with a very early 4am start so DD could go to an 18th that night.
Thanks @Fruitygal
We are booked into an early afternoon talk at the moment but might see if I can change it

Fruitygal · 20/10/2021 22:54

If you got there early you could spend 10-1pm doing the other bits and pieces out of the way then finish with the talk? That might be easier than swapping the talk time.

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2021 23:00

How are folks going to Sheffield getting there? Park and Ride is mentioned but it adds time to the journey. We have to be there by about 11 ...

Monkey2001 · 21/10/2021 00:11

When we went to Sheffield back in 2018, parking on the streets near the campus were unrestricted on a Saturday. Parkopedia says still free. I think we parked on Wilkinson St - this is a good site en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/locations/the_university_of_sheffield_5656gcqzwjd1w1rcbb/?country=uk&arriving=202110230800&leaving=202110231600

You need to choose the "street" tab to find the free Saturday parking

I’d quite like to know what DS’s predicted were in the end , there was a possibility of one being raised a grade after he dropped the 4th.

No visits been done here either as he was so very unwell in the summer and although much better we’re currently taking weekends slowly .Will do offer holder days if he gets any offers.

Piggywaspushed · 21/10/2021 07:02

Oooh, I wonder how easy it will be to find those spaces?

Oblomov21 · 21/10/2021 07:10

Loving idea of Austin Powers. Grin

ProggyMat · 21/10/2021 07:34

@crazycrofter DD has applied to 5 Unis - she hasn’t done any visits as yet just lots of online research.
She’ll do offer holder days if they materialise!
