Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

She’s a friend’s DD, please do tell your DD - everyone can have off days and such a shame that it often means they don’t go onto something they would really like to do.

Seeline · 19/10/2021 11:16

Hurrah - school have finally submitted her UCAS statement!! Just got to sit and wait now.....

BlueMarigold · 19/10/2021 12:04

For those who have done an EPQ, how do you add it to the UCAS application? My DD has entered her GCSES but does she enter her A-level subjects herself or will the teachers do that?

crazycrofter · 19/10/2021 12:43

Dd told me this morning to stop telling her what to do and that she’s going to submit her UCAS form in January! So I’m going to try very hard not to mention anything about university between now and Christmas, except for taking her to the Leicester open day in November!

Monkey2001 · 19/10/2021 12:45

@BlueMarigold we just added it with the A levels as a pending qualification. I assume that If you already had the grade, you would enter it like a GCSE with a grade.

Ds doesn't go into school on a Tuesday (every other week) he was just getting in his car when I came home at 12.45pm I asked where he was going....to school to play football in the lunchtime break 🤣 I guess at least he gets some fresh air and exercise.

Ok...I can see that post 3 times. I didn't do that. I hope the rest of you can't see it 3 times.

BlueMarigold · 19/10/2021 13:41

Thank you @Monkey2001 is it easy to find on the list? She doesn’t have a formal grade yet. It was sent off for moderation. The results will come out in January so might be too late. Are we allowed to update the form with a grade from pending to actual once we get the grade?

ProggyMat · 19/10/2021 13:53

@BlueMarigold DD out EPQ in January as pending and her referee mentioned the ‘before moderation’ grade along with her predicted A level grades.

BlueMarigold · 19/10/2021 13:57

Thank you @ProggyMat Smile

EwwSprouts · 19/10/2021 17:17

Heifer Just to add to the info overload & assuming clinical scientist is similar to biomedical scientist Lancaster offer an accredited course which gives you a placement in an NHS lab...
Lancaster University’s BSc Biomedical Science is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). An IBMS-accredited degree, along with a training period in an NHS lab, represents a core route to employment in the NHS as a biomedical scientist.

Feeling frustrated. DD has submitted her side of the UCAS form in but it seems the school sit on it until December when her mocks predict her grades. She's had a preliminary grading but wanted to go up a grade in one and the teacher said that because she hadn't done the practical side of it she could do her practical in Dec and it may well bump up one grade. Why can't she do the practical now?
Seems we won't get offers until after the January cut off. Was hoping for early submission. So frustrating.

Nard75 · 19/10/2021 17:41

Does it make any difference if you submit the application earlier than other students to you getting an offer? So if DS1 doesn't submit his until January would it make any difference to him getting an offer compared to someone who had submitted in October?

crazycrofter · 19/10/2021 17:51

I'm hoping not @nard75! I don't think it's done on a 'first come first served' approach. I had a look at one of the unis dd may apply to for mental health nursing and it said interviews would be conducted over 4 weeks in Jan, Feb and March, so that suggests that even if dd submitted now, she wouldn't get an interview (and therefore an offer) until Feb anyway. It's obviously different if they don't interview, hence why several here have had offers already. But they don't 'run out of offers' as far as I know?

Nard75 · 19/10/2021 18:04

DS1 is looking at a Maths degree and as far as I am aware they don't interview for this. Just another question what if all the students who are given an offer get the grades required what happens if they have over offered.

Decorhate · 19/10/2021 19:08

Ds has his predicted grades now which are much the same as they were last year. His school are encouraging them to get on with finalising their applications & tbh I wish he would just get on with it now.

Also mentoring 6th formers at the school I work at & feel I spend my whole time cajoling people at the moment!

crazycrofter · 19/10/2021 19:42

@Nard75 this doesn’t usually happen as they know roughly how many offers to make, but it did last year because of the inflated grades. They had to honour the offers, but a few universities basically bribed people to defer with free accommodation/cash sums! And some universities are just over full this year. I hope they’ve learned their lesson and it won’t happen again.

Nard75 · 19/10/2021 19:54

@crazycrofter Lets hope this year they know what they are dealing with. No communication whatsoever from DS1 with regard to personal statement or the application process. Don't know what he is going to fill in where he needs to know household income etc. Is anyone else having the same issues he just thinks he knows everything and has a bad attitude with regard to everything.

crazycrofter · 19/10/2021 20:47

I think the income stuff is for the student finance application isn’t it? Not that I’ve seen a UCAS form!

I do think a lot of them start to feel ready to move out at this point - I remember the same feeling myself. I should think his school are on top of the deadlines too?

PaddingtonPaddington · 19/10/2021 21:29

Finally got both DDs auditions uploaded. One done at the weekend and one this evening. I’m now an expert at editing videos. Each had different requirements, now we wait with fingers crossed for interviews.

Roll on half term

cariadambyth · 19/10/2021 21:37

We are all ready for half term too, getting up seemed to be a struggle for both dc this morning! Dd has had two offers, one for Southampton, the other for Bath Spa. She’s had an email from Warwick thanking her for the application but saying they’ll look at it in the new year so at least we know not to hold our breath. It’s lovely to hear of others getting offers too.

EerilyDisembodied · 19/10/2021 21:49

DS is on a two week half term, but DD only has next week off. Her school is getting wiped out by Covid, we took her to a walk-in PCR centre this morning and pretty well everyone in the queue was from her school even though it's 8 miles away. They have gone back to bubbles, masks etc. Lots of teachers off too, I am feeling concerned about the prospect of another winter of this, but at least they are slowly getting the younger teens jabbed now.

Reading Open day for us on Saturday. Then we've got Chichester next Friday. It's taking over our lives a bit at the moment.

ProggyMat · 19/10/2021 22:01

@cariadambyth Well done to your DD!
