Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Congratulations esther!

Eek - just sent DD off on her first driving lesson. She is very nervous....

ealingwestmum · 18/10/2021 13:30

Brilliant news esther! I guess we are going to see very different comms from these unis over the next 6 months. DD was very miffed to not even get a thank you for your application from Manchester, let alone an offer (I think they may interview for some courses?), whereas her mates are getting offers left right and centre.

It's going to be a long 6 months I feel!

ealingwestmum · 18/10/2021 13:30

Hope she comes back beaming Seeline, once the first is out the way!

estherfrewen · 18/10/2021 13:41

Yes very relieved! ABB which is standard offer - ancient and medieval history. He had had acknowledgements from everywhere except Birmingham so perhaps the issue was only with that one choice but school have emailed all of them now just in case. Hope the driving lesson goes well!

Piggywaspushed · 18/10/2021 13:49

Yay esther . Good news!

Monkey2001 · 18/10/2021 13:56

@Seeline hope your DD does better than my DS last night. He was out with DH and turning right from a side road onto a dual carriageway controlled by lights. DH’s phone rang and he thought he could answer as they were at a light controlled junction, just realised in time that DS was doing a beautifully positioned turn into the wrong carriageway. Luckily managed to rescue the situation, don’t think DS will make that particular mistake again!

I wonder whether Birmingham get more acceptances by sending offers out so early.

Anybody got half term plans? I wanted to do a trip to see DS1 in St Andrews via a look at Manchester, but DS2 needs to do PE coursework and EPQ, so don’t think it will happen.

Good news on the offer @estherfrewen!

Dd has stalled at the point of deciding whether to do straight Mental health nursing or dual registration with children’s nursing. Two 18th birthday parties this weekend have taken up all her attention! There’s another on Friday night… it’s going to be a busy year I think!

Monkey2001 · 18/10/2021 13:57

Meant to say congrats to Esther!

Fab news Esther, DS hasn't even sent his off!

ProggyMat · 18/10/2021 14:13

Well done to your DS! @estherfrewen

Alsoplayspiccolo · 18/10/2021 15:14

Half term plans here are fairly busy.
DD turns 18 next week, but DS will be away on a music course, so we’ve secretly booked a night away for the 4 of us, in a hotel with a spa in Bath - shopping, dinner, drinks, swimming, sauna etc.
We need to drive DS to Hertfordshire for his course midweek and then collect him from London at the end of the week.
DD’s birthday is the day after he goes, and she wants to celebrate with her friends…but hasn’t organised anything and doesn’t know what she wants to do; she’s going to Center Parcs with them the following week (we get 2 weeks half term).
Additionally, we have the usual round of eye/physio/hospital appointments to fit in.

It would have been nice to have a bit of breathing room to get PS written, final uni choices made, NEAs written, maybe even some campus tours, but that’s looking increasingly unlikely.

20newnames · 18/10/2021 15:16

Well done to @estherfrewen's DS!
@Monkey2001 DH also thought he could answer his phone while supervising DS but thankfully DS quickly told him otherwise! Sounds like your DH/DS's incident was a lucky escape!

After my rant yesterday DS actually came to me and asked if I had some time to go through his personal statement yesterday afternoon! We made some stages and the draft has gone off to his form tutor, phew! At least we are a stage further along.

20newnames · 18/10/2021 15:18

@Alsoplayspiccolo - that break sounds amazing, I am jealous!

crazycrofter · 18/10/2021 15:20

Oh, I’m envious of those whose personal statements are done. Dd is being incredibly laid back about it, says she’s got loads to put now so it won’t be difficult , but I would just like her to get it done. My mum has started making a fuss about it and nagging me which doesn’t help!

icanbewhatiwant · 18/10/2021 15:28

At least you are hearing about their PS's. Ds won't discuss his with me. I asked what he's writing in it. He said he hasn't got a lot to say as he's not done anything much. But told me he has until January anyway. That is all I'm going to get from him. But then I didn't feel much use when ds1 asked for help with his. So maybe I should be glad Ds2 is not asking me.

BlueMarigold · 18/10/2021 15:52
@EwwSprouts - yes Biology (still trying to decide between 3 yrs BSc or with 1 yr placement or 4 yrs MSci at the moment.

Out of interest what are others applying for?
@Heifer my DD applied for MSci at the unis on her list that offer it. You can change your mind once you are there.

Piggywaspushed · 18/10/2021 16:04

DS just got his Thatcher assessment back. : 87%. He is chuffed as he beat his rival, who is applying to Oxford to do history, and who hero worships Thatcher! Grin strange role mode for 17 yo boy

crazycrofter · 18/10/2021 16:23

That’s good @Piggywaspushed! Dd had a Thatcher question in her exam last week but no result yet..

Oblomov21 · 18/10/2021 17:27

Ds pressed submit on UCAS this afternoon and I paid him the £26.50. HoY had recommended he submit early. We are so relieved it's over. Now he can just focus on mocks. I'm relieved.

He currently has 4 assessments going on with accountancy firms.

EwwSprouts · 18/10/2021 17:34

@estherfrewen Great news!

@Heifer still trying to decide between 3 yrs BSc or with 1 yr placement or 4 yrs MSci at the moment
DS discussed the MSci option with one of the course leaders. As PP said the finance makes it easier to apply now and then drop down if you change your mind. If you aren't on for a 2:1 the university will drop you down anyway. What was more interesting is what is the merit? It's only worth a handful of Masters points so can't be in her words "topped up to a Masters proper". Yes you get to do another small research project. Talking afterwards DS and I concluded it may be a nice way to stay a student a bit longer but if you want to pursue an academic path you would be better off doing a proper Masters (unless we got the wrong end of the stick?).

DoggerelBank · 18/10/2021 17:35

@icanbewhatiwant Sounds familiar. DS is taking the 'no hurry' approach too. Although now I find out he has a deadline of end of Nov for both an EPQ that hasn't got further than a subject area and title yet, and a PS which hasn't been started, as well as choosing a degree subject and some universities. And we're away all half term, so there won't be much progress made then. I'm starting to feel like it may not happen, and he'll be applying to uni after he gets his A level results. Which wouldn't be the end of the world, I guess. A year off would probably do him good.

Oblomov21 · 18/10/2021 18:09

None of ds's Uni choices make any allowance for his EPQ grade that he's already got. So what was the point if all that hard work last year then? Hmm

Oblomov21 · 18/10/2021 18:12

I'm gonna start an excel spreadsheet for all of Durham's colleges so we can put them all in order. He's already got favourites. Ds like the gown ones, pretentious toff that he is.

crazycrofter · 18/10/2021 18:12

That’s annoying @Oblomov21. I think you need to take the line that it was good prep for Uni work (if he goes).

Are the accountancy assessments for higher apprenticeships or sponsored degree apprenticeships?

Dd is wondering whether doing a masters in mental health nursing/dual registration will give her an advantage - or make no difference at all.

Oblomov21 · 18/10/2021 18:18

Reading another thread. Must pull out a statement for ds's child trust fund, because that matures at 18.
