Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Yes DS’s top choices are all LNAT too, typical. His is hooked for 4 weeks time, I’m trying to get him to do more practice but they are very long and he gets bored of it. He’s also got a lot of school work on and working (more hours than I would like).

Monkey2001 · 24/09/2021 20:08

@Wiifitmama we received the programme this week. You can't sign up for anything in advance, you go and register then go to the marquee to sign up for tours (campus, accom, sports centre). Weirdly there was nothing about stunning up for the talks (running same talk twice for medicine), but that might be because there are always no shows. There are lots of talks, but I think they will focus on campus as can always watch the talks on line at the next open day. Will let you know how they get on.

Thanks Monkey!

ProggyMat · 24/09/2021 20:19

@mummyinbeds Welcome!
Is your DS applying to Oxford, hence the early LNAT?

icanbewhatiwant · 24/09/2021 20:34

We are due to go the open day at Sussex next weekend. We haven't heard from them though. I have booked accommodation at an Airbnb. Seemed the best option. We can do it in a day, it is 160 miles away. I just don't want to drive it all in a day. As I said previously we have family near Brighton but they can't put us up on this occasion. We will still visit them though. Will leave here at 6am on the Saturday. Go to the open day, visit the family. Then come home Sunday via my mum's as she lives on the south coast about an hour from Brighton.

Shimy · 24/09/2021 20:41

@icanbewhatiwant Hope you enjoy your visit to Sussex. I’ve never seen it but ds1 visited when it was his time and came raving about it to the point it was a struggle to get him to be ‘open minded’ and look at others. He didn’t end up going there but he seems enchanted by it.

icanbewhatiwant · 24/09/2021 20:51

@Shimy Ds only wants to go there. He might put others on his application. Sussex has the lower entrance requirements too. I think ABB. I have suggested looking at other universities and what the course covers, there aren't many that do history with philosophy. But he's not having any of it. I'm hoping to have a good chat with him on the way to Sussex. He doesn't tell me anything. He will be stuck in the car with me 3 hours. So he will have to say something!

Fiddlersgreen · 24/09/2021 21:11

Is anyone booked in for the Bournemouth open day next Saturday?
I’m sure I booked it but I can’t find any email and we haven’t heard any more about it

mummyinbeds · 24/09/2021 21:33

Hi @ProggyMat Yes, he was applying to Oxford but he's having doubts about it now. He went to an open day in the summer and absolutely loved it which surprised me - he's not usually a fan of tradition or old buildings.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 24/09/2021 21:33

Yes, we're booked in for Bournemouth, DS got an email this afternoon (I didn't).

ProggyMat · 24/09/2021 21:48

@mummyinbeds I tuned into early ‘AT’ tests Grin
My DD is having a punt at Oxford - yet to visit- and there are several others on this thread with DCs in the same boat and others with DC applying to Cambridge too!

Fiddlersgreen · 24/09/2021 21:53

@EssentiallyDisorganised

Yes, we're booked in for Bournemouth, DS got an email this afternoon (I didn't).
Thanks. Either of us have received anything so maybe I booked a different date Hmm
Fiddlersgreen · 24/09/2021 21:54

*neither

Monkey2001 · 24/09/2021 21:55

@crazycrofter - for your DS from mine

Volterra · 25/09/2021 07:53

Welcome Mummyinbeds. DS doing an AT test as applying for Maths and a few places may give lower offer based on performance in it. He’s doing one of the other entrance tests the day before so that’s going to be a busy week for him but at least gets it out of the way before Christmas, unlike STEP which isn’t until the summer.

Shimy · 25/09/2021 09:10

Odd question but does anyone know where one can hire a conductor’s jacket? It’s for DS who will be directing his house choir in a few weeks.

Monkey2001 · 25/09/2021 09:23

@Shimy it is not a standard thing these days, lots of conductors wear glitzy jackets or a shirt. You need to feel comfortable and unrestricted. If he really wants a tailcoat you can hire from wedding places, or put something on FB to see if any of your friends have them.

OP posts:
Shimy · 25/09/2021 09:32

That’s actually true about the glitzy jacket but DS is such a square I know if I even suggest it, it’ll be flat No! Everything has to be just so.
I’m also not willing to spend above a certain amount on a jacket he’s only going to wear for one evening.

KingscoteStaff · 25/09/2021 09:46

Conductor's tails are very different from the Morning coats you might wear at a wedding.

Moss Bross hire evening tails - but that's quite a lot for one performance.

I would ask local theatre or am dram if they could hire you one from their wardrobe store. We have a local vintage suit place that might do one (SW London).

Shimy · 25/09/2021 10:11

Thanks Kings, that is quite pricey. DS has been looking on eBay as well. I’m not ‘musical’ and quite rankle don’t know the difference between a ‘morning coat’ & ‘confuctor’s tails’. I’m hoping if he orders the wrong type, school won’t make a fuss about it.

Shimy · 25/09/2021 10:12

‘Frankly’ not rankle and for heaven’s sake, ‘Conductor’.

Seeline · 25/09/2021 10:17

@shimy - if he just wants to give the right 'impression' ordinary tails would work, possibly in a bigger size, and left unbuttoned. My DH conducts the church choir and the main thing you need is a looser fit - lifting your arms up and then moving them around is quite difficult in an ordinary jacket if it's tight across the chest and shoulders. Depends how energetic your DSs conducting method is 😁

Shimy · 25/09/2021 10:17

Just to add @KingscoteStaff SW is a bit far for us but thank you for suggesting it. I’ll see if we have something closer.

Seeline · 25/09/2021 10:19

Just a thought - would any of the music staff at school have one he could borrow for the evening?

KingscoteStaff · 25/09/2021 10:22

I spent many years working for an opera company and the fuss that Maestros make about their jackets has to be seen to be believed!
