Corona Cohort: Statements Scripted, Grades Predicted

Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thanks! Pressing submit felt nerve wracking...

ealingwestmum · 23/09/2021 17:19

Looking forward to hearing the DC on here getting their first offers. Well done Esther.

Nothing happening here until after 11 Oct when final predicted grades are issued.

Hattifatteners · 23/09/2021 17:22

First one @estherfrewen! DD's needs to be submitted tonight. Have I understood it correctly that it goes to their school first and they then send it forward?

EssentiallyDisorganised · 23/09/2021 17:23

Mine have never socialised online either, they literally just text friends a few times a week if they do want to meet-up, or check homework or something, I think they are just very introverted. DD's best friend lives within about 5 mins walk of us and they still only meet up every few weeks. Couldn't be more different from me, I was out with friends all the time from about age 10 onwards and still am extremely sociable, online and in real life.

estherfrewen · 23/09/2021 17:29

@Hattifatteners - he just submitted onscreen and I paid and it then says application will now go to school to finalise their bit. I kept saying "are you sure that's what you do??" as was paranoid it was wrong but he said that's what school said and it definitely looked right

Heifer · 23/09/2021 17:30

well done @estherfrewen :-)

Changing the subject massively, has anyone entered into the Ballot for Commonwealth Games Tickets in Birmingham?

I've plumped for hockey (obviously) netball (uck) and athletics (Fri-Sun). Wanted to try a few more sports but couldn't make it work with the hockey as didn't want to make 2 trips and it was really hard to figure out when england might be playing so opted for semi finals in the hope they make it (still decent matches if they dont).
The cost of the athletics were well over double than the hockey/netball but fancied having a watch so went for it. Fingers crossed we get them.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 23/09/2021 18:08

I've got it on my list of things to do Heifer but have been undecided as its right in the middle of the summer holidays. We have family in Birmingham so we have somewhere to stay. Hockey and swimming are our first choices, then athletics.

ProggyMat · 23/09/2021 18:56

Hope the birthday DDs have a fabulous time! @ealingwestmum @SandyBayley
@estherfrewen well done - I bet that’s a huge relief!
Given the recent chat, in ‘normal’ times, in DDs wider social circle, 16th birthday parties do involve alcohol and food.
In Yr13 most are ‘out’ out, to coin a phrase.

ealingwestmum · 23/09/2021 19:02

Thank you Proggy!

crazycrofter · 23/09/2021 19:05

@EssentiallyDisorganised we must have swapped kids at birth, I’m the introverted one here so I struggle to understand my kids’ social needs!

Well done on the UCAS form submitted, how exciting! Dd hasn’t written her PS yet, but she does have a week of work experience arranged in a couple of weeks.

Living in Birmingham I feel we probably should enter the ballot - but I’m not sure I can be bothered!

Heifer · 23/09/2021 19:07

@EssentiallyDisorganised - not long left to apply (in this round anyway) - I know what you mean re dates, I've gone for Aug 5-7th hoping that DD has had her holiday beforehand and it doesn't clash with results etc.

Heifer · 23/09/2021 19:08

@crazycrofter bothered to apply or bothered to go? it's one of those things I've left in the past but then regretted once it's starts so have gone for it.

crazycrofter · 23/09/2021 19:29

I’m not sure how interested I am - but you’re right, I will probably regret it if I don’t apply!

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2021 19:41

Surprised DH hasn't mentioned this. We normally would get tickets for this sort of thing.

Re UCAS. How much do you pay if you enter early and then add other unis later? DS doesn't know anything about this bit. I presume you pay again to enter more?

And if you did put 4 or all 5 on for Oct 15th, might you hear back from other unis quite quickly or would you only hear after Dec 15th deadline?

ealingwestmum · 23/09/2021 19:48

Piggy, if you put down 2 for early submission, you won’t get charged for more later. It’s single or multiple (whether it’s 2 or 5).

As for how quickly or slowly, I don’t think there is a set process anymore, from reading previous threads it can be anything from 24 hours, right up to the deadline wire. With many held to to the end for an ultimate reject.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2021 19:53

Ah, OK, that's helpful, thanks!

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2021 19:53

He definitely wants York or Birmingham too so he can put them on and then decide the other two later when he knows if he needs a lower insurance.

crazycrofter · 23/09/2021 20:32

Is he trying for Oxford or Cambridge @Piggywaspushed? Or have I misunderstood and it’s neither?

I’m wondering whether submitting it with just 3 choices might be a good idea for dd too. She’s not likely to need lower offers as they’re generally all at the B/B/B level anyway but she may not get through the interviews I guess. Does anyone know when interviews for Occupational Therapy rend to happen?

EssentiallyDisorganised · 23/09/2021 20:38

We didn't apply for London 2012 tickets as we were concerned about travel chaos, kids too young etc but regretted it. So we put in for last minute Paralympic Games tickets and had the most brilliant day out, transport was a doddle, saw Hannah Cockroft win a gold, it really was memorable.

PaddingtonPaddington · 23/09/2021 20:39

Well done @estherfrewen.

Does anyone know how you link application to the school? DD has the buzz word but can’t find where to put it. Have googled which seems to say it’s in the options but can’t see that either…

whatsnext2 · 23/09/2021 20:43

@Piggywaspushed did he attend the York online open day? We watched the English and Politics sessions and were disappointed in how unengaging they were, it was really hard to stay focused on them. I felt really sorry for the students who have had a year of doing it.

estherfrewen · 23/09/2021 20:55

Thanks @PaddingtonPaddington - just asked DS about how he linked it to school but he can't remember! Hopeless. They set it up in school in June - had an off timetable day to do it - and then just filled in courses and PS at home.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2021 20:57

Both of those have amazing reputations at York, though, especially English. DS is fed up of virtual ones now. He did attend a York one a while back and it was OK, one pf the better ones. Sheffield have been excellent, Bath was dull and Leeds was awful : that was the only one he was actively put off.

Piggywaspushed · 23/09/2021 20:59

@crazycrofter

Is he trying for Oxford or Cambridge *@Piggywaspushed*? Or have I misunderstood and it’s neither?

Yes, Cambridge crazy but it's a long shot so other places will need careful consideration if he doesn't get Cambridge offer as they are all the same grades! Sheffield is the only one that's a bit lower so we want to visit . Doing so Oct 23rd.
Monkey2001 · 23/09/2021 21:00

Piggy there is a rate for 1 selection and a rate for 2-5. You just log in and add the others later, DS1 did this with Biomed after he got his Cambridge rejection second time round and concluded that he was never going to get a medicine offer.

crazy medicine interviews are mostly December to Feb, with a few in March. I expect OT is the same, but if you really want to know, look at the thread on TSR for last year - try this one www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6490088. I need to send you an anti-steroids link for your DS too. Apparently "more weights more dates" (subtle!) is the YouTuber to go for although it may be a bit technical.
