Place holder

OP posts:
ProggyMat · 19/09/2021 09:36

I read it was 10K plus free 2022/3 accommodation for Law and Business at Leeds.
Did York offer an incentive to defer for those housed in Hull?

KingscoteStaff · 19/09/2021 09:43

And Edinburgh has had to put bunk beds into single size rooms! I’m surprised there are any places left for our guys - I can’t see why 2021 Freshers wouldn’t defer if they could!

stoneysongs · 19/09/2021 09:48

just hope they are not seeing it as an opportunity to expand student numbers with on line lectures and no need to guarantee accommodation

This would be my worry given that they are announcing it now. Everyone is expecting exams to go ahead as usual, so why would they need to admit more students than they can accommodate? They could easily have said - if everything proceeds as planned, we will have the usual accommodation guarantee in place. If there are changes to exams and a larger than expected number of students gain a place, we may offer incentives to defer and as a last resort may not be able to guarantee accommodation.

Those who have had a PCR test recently, how long for results (especially in the London area)?

DD been under the weather for over a week, but the dreaded cough started Friday night. Got tested at 10.30 yesterday morning....

Most of her year are really suffering with various nasty viruses, but nearly all have negative tests so 🤞

stoneysongs · 19/09/2021 10:32

DD tested at 12pm on Thursday and result arrived 5am Friday. In South Wales tho.

Seeline · 19/09/2021 10:43

We're up to 24 hours already ☹️

stoneysongs · 19/09/2021 10:54

Oh that's a bit rubbish @Seeline
I hope it comes through soon

Seeline · 19/09/2021 10:58

Me too singing. I don't think she'll be going to school tomorrow regardless. Sometimes I think you just need a day off

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 11:02

Did York offer an incentive to defer for those housed in Hull?
Don't think so but don't know anyone directly affected. I read it as 10% discount and plan to move them to York in Jan when new build finished?

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 11:04

Not guaranteeing accommodation to freshers is a dealbreaker for me!

Certainly a game changer. Sorting out your own private accom would be a real headache.

Seeline · 19/09/2021 11:09

Many unis have only guaranteed accommodation to those who have them as their firm choice. For those using them for insurance unis or through clearing have always had to take pot luck.

mummabear74 · 19/09/2021 11:31

Durham is top of DDs list at the moment. We did one of their tours a couple of weeks ago and she really got a good feel for the place.

I am concerned re the accommodation and the number of deferrals. She suffers with anxiety and has just been referred for ASD/ADHD assessment. It's going to be a big move for her and I think accommodation worries would cause her more stress.

20newnames · 19/09/2021 12:36

Interestingly with regard to deferrals, we asked that question directly on a Bath admission session yesterday, whether the extra deferrals would impact availability of places for our year. They said that having analysed the numbers they don't actually have more deferrals this year than usual. Which I found surprising but reassuring.

When asked the same question again yesterday on an admissions session, Durham skirted round the question and didn't directly answer it.

ProggyMat · 19/09/2021 13:23

Was that university wide or subject specific @20newnames ?
I read on a thread ( can’t remember which one unfortunately) that a poster reckoned there are circa 4K more deferrals at this point in time compared to 2020.
One of DDs choices went to clearing this year-Exeter as did Warwick which she was keen on at one point but then changed her mind.

20newnames · 19/09/2021 13:43

proggy I think it was university wide as it was a general admissions session.

ProggyMat · 19/09/2021 14:07

@20newnames Ah, I see.
Bath is not on DDs ( or mine) radar as it doesn’t offer her degree.
I’ve had a quick look at their website and it seems they don’t offer History either- could be me as I’m on a tiny phone with sausage fingers- which attracts a lot of applications at Durham ( as the another path thread attests )
I’m thinking for our Corona Cohort it would be best to focus on subject specific deferrals rather than university wide?

Isthisjustnormal · 19/09/2021 14:09

@Seeline: dd was tested 8:30 am on Friday - results back in less than 24hrs (SE)

20NewNames · 19/09/2021 14:25

@ProggyMat No, Bath doesn’t have an Arts faculty, it is all STEM based subjects.

Piggywaspushed · 19/09/2021 14:45

And social sciences and MFL!

20newnames · 19/09/2021 14:56

Yep @Piggywaspushed I over-generalised!! It has a STEM focus

Seeline · 19/09/2021 17:08

PCR negative!

Obviously just the same virus that half the 6th form have got.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/09/2021 17:13

@Seeline that's good. My year 8 tested negative on Tuesday. He cried because it meant he had to go back to school. This waiting for pcr tests each time they get ill might be annoying. We managed to escape it last year.

Monkey2001 · 19/09/2021 17:48

Good news @Seeline. Yes, getting a test every time a DC feels unwell is going to become part of normal life. Our school insists on a negative Covid test for a whole long list of symptoms. Lots of Vitamins C/D and orange juice being administered here to minimise chances of colds.

I tried to look into number of deferrals, it is data that UCAS will have. I found this Times article - perhaps Piggy could tell us what it says. Headline is almost 30,000 deferrals, but I think we would all find it interesting to know where they are. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/deferrals-of-university-places-reach-highest-level-in-a-decade-2588lxlcb

Monkey2001 · 19/09/2021 17:53

This article lists the subjects which were offering deferral payments this year at Durham - Classics, English Studies, History, Music, Biosciences, Psychology, Management and Geography, as well as Joint Honours degrees incorporating these subjects.

York Uni vice chancellor was just on BBC news. Plan is to move them back in Jan.

Interestingly the journalist commented that another sign of resuming normality was international students back on campus.
