Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 08:50

Should say York and Sheffield

Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 08:55

@NCTDN
English
Durham 3
Warwick 10
Leeds 27
Bristol 39

iberian languages
Durham 6
Warwick 7
Leeds 22
Bristol 17

BlueMarigold · 18/09/2021 09:10

Thanks @Delphigirl! That’s a shame about Reading.

Monkey2001 · 18/09/2021 09:55

Take these league tables with a MASSIVE pinch of salt! Different people are looking for different things, so if they are interested in an academic future, the research will be more relevant, if they want to be taught well and move into industry, teaching is more relevant. Student satisfaction is very subjective, but I think it is final year students who complete the survey, and I suspect that as well as Covid, some will have been more affected by lecturer strikes. Good point above that cities may have lost more of their normal experience than smaller places. St Andrews students made a lot of use of beaches for social gatherings when indoor venues were closed.

I think if I was trying to get real opinions from students, apart from talking to friends and family and students at open days, most of the universities have chat functions on their websites where you can connect with a student on the same or a similar course.

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 10:28

I see Delphi has beaten me to it!

I think you are reading it wrong though delphi (as did I originally!) : the second column is their overall rank not last year's - it's confusing!

So RHU is 37th for biology and 26th overall.

Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 10:32

Oh god @Piggywaspushed I am useless! The real danger of these tables is numpties like me not understanding them 😱😱

Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 10:33

So the “big risers” are no such thing but in fact unis where the dept is considerably higher ranked than the uni as a whole then. Possibly interesting but in a different way ..!

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 10:36

Yes, although overall ranking includes lots more unis for some subjects (probably not biology).

In terms of Lib Arts, Bristol used to be considered really good for English but I have heard less positive things over the last few years. It's a bit Marmite on MN, Bristol... we are avoiding it for DS even though it's really good for social policy because I am not sure it would suit him.

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 10:37

Oh, and Warwick is fab for English - I mean really excellent and renowned. I have a colleague whose DD is doing Spanish there and she really rates it.

Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 10:42

Southampton is excellent for Iberian languages and does liberal arts and seems to have come out of the pandemic pretty well

NCTDN · 18/09/2021 10:59

I'm really keen on Warwick for dd but obv it's not my decision. Just waiting on some sort of open day...
stoneysongs · 18/09/2021 11:36

Anyone visiting Warwick, make sure you pay and display - I've just had a £70 parking fine!

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 11:48

Oh dear...

ProggyMat · 18/09/2021 12:04

EPQ news here- and proud mam alert- DD has full marks. It is going to exam board for moderation so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it isn’t ‘pulled down’ lower than an A star.
First draft PS has been handed in and feedback given, without me being asked to read it and comment- thankfully!
Five Unis chosen and a college for her punt at Oxford ( allegedly )
No Uni visits done as we’ll do that if she gets offers.

stoneysongs · 18/09/2021 12:06

Wow, many congratulations to her Proggy 🤩

20newnames · 18/09/2021 12:22

Well done to Proggy’s DD on the EPQ.
@singingstones ouch! Our parking at Warwick last weekend was £1!! It was a hassle to register and pay though.

Doing Durham virtual day today with one session from Bath added in. Then York tomorrow!
Another weekends worth!

Volterra · 18/09/2021 12:37

A huge well done to her Proggy, I know how hard she has worked, really well deserved. !

DS a bit flustered on way home yesterday and said he needs to decide what entrance exams. He is doing , where to apply and can’t decide whether to drop an A level and if so which one. He’s worried about applying without having seen places but I pointed out he is in good company and there’s hopefully offer holder places in future and he should be feeling better by then.

His personal statement this week has gone from non existent to 4K characters I think he said so he’s off the starting block.

Oblomov21 · 18/09/2021 12:39

Well done Proggy dd on EPQ.

Monkey2001 · 18/09/2021 12:40

Well done Proggy DD. Did she finds the EPQ a useful experience? I think it really sets then up for managing dissertation and other projects.

@singingstones ouch! Does that mean Warwick off the list?!

ealingwestmum · 18/09/2021 12:49

Well done to your DD Proggy!

estherfrewen · 18/09/2021 12:59

Well done for DD EPQ, @ProggyMat!

BlueMarigold · 18/09/2021 13:08

Well done @ProggyMat’s DD!

ProggyMat · 18/09/2021 13:18

@singingstones Cheers! And Angry at parking fine! Did you park on campus? If so, could you contest it?
@20newnames Thanks and a huge vote for Durham from me!
@Volterra seems a long time when we were in the ‘tunnel of hell’ together?
Your DS has been so poorly but thankfully is in the mend and it’s still early days! Flowers
@Monkey2001 if you asked her that during the lockdown from January to March in Y12 and then having to hand it in at the beginning of May whilst revising for end of year exams she’d say ‘no’ but now ‘yes’
@Oblomov21 thanks!

stoneysongs · 18/09/2021 13:21

Our parking at Warwick last weekend was £1!!

Not helping, @20newnames !!

All my own fault of course, just didn't notice any signs, multi storey was almost empty, and then when I saw pay and display signs at some of the other car parks I allowed DS to persuade me that it would be ok and no need to go back and check.

@Monkey2001 I've told DS that it's coming out of his student loan Grin

The worst thing was that it's DH's car so he opened the letter and left it on the kitchen counter in a very accusatory manner I thought Smile
But to be fair he then paid it because there was money off for prompt payment and he didn't trust me to do it quickly enough Grin
