@Piggywaspushed thank you for that link.

Decorhate · 17/09/2021 12:11

@BlueMarigold Hi. The data is quite raw - doesn’t go into specific A Level subjects and aggregates across similar subjects- however for all 3 unis the majority of students had AAB or lower.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 17/09/2021 13:02

Thanks everyone, re inspirational teachers. His best friend's DSis is a newly qualified history teacher and friend of the family so I'm hoping she might have one or two pointers too.

Mine will very likely be doing a foundation year (either integrated or separate) @Alsoplayspiccolo. Not a problem in itself but it will mean two years with both our DCs at uni rather than just one which is quite daunting from the point of view of living expenses.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/09/2021 13:11

Thanks, Monkey. Yes, we're in Wales so a combination of grants and loans, according to means testing.

That's something I hadn't thought about, Essentially, but we'd be in exactly the same position with DD and DS.

BlueMarigold · 17/09/2021 16:09

Thank you so much @Decorhate! That is very reassuring.

Delphigirl · 17/09/2021 17:09

Oooh @Decorhate - oceanography BSc at Southampton and Marine Geography BSc at Cardiff pretty please!!!

EwwSprouts · 17/09/2021 17:09

Decorhate Please would you report on the grades for biology at St Andrews? If possible for the BSc and the integrated masters. Thank you.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 17/09/2021 18:46

Gawd, just thinking about the overlapping DCs at uni thing a bit more. If DS deferred and then took a foundation year we could be looking at three years of two at uni

Decorhate · 17/09/2021 18:55

@Delphigirl @EwwSprouts I’ll take a look on Monday - don’t have my login details at home.

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2021 18:57

The Good University Guide league tables are out today. If anyone is swayed by these, I have a subscription so I can tell you what rank a university is for a subject if anyone likes to know..

Notably, St Andrew's has overtaken Oxford and Cambridge and is first for the first time in the 30 year history of the tables! Causing dry amusement on another thread...

Monkey2001 · 17/09/2021 19:13

Piggy I was thinking I should see what that thread is saying! In truth I think the methodology is flawed and Scottish universities always have an advantage because UCAS points are more generous for Scottish exams. Also Oxbridge boycott the student satisfaction survey in which St Andrews always do very well, so The Times applies an adjustment for student satisfaction based on an old survey adjusted for average movement in the sector.

Having said that, St Andrews is a lovely place to be a student and DS1 really loves calling it home.

@EwwSprouts St Andrews are sometimes flexible on results day because they NEVER enter Clearing. Looking at stats for the last 2 years may not be very relevant for this cohort as too many people have met grades at the most competitive universities due to grade inflation. There are some good FOIs with competition data on whatdotheyknow.

stoneysongs · 17/09/2021 19:28

@Decorhate
If you wouldn't mind adding me to the list of grade requests, BSc neuroscience at Bristol, Nottingham and Sussex please.

BlueMarigold · 17/09/2021 20:56

@Piggywaspushed Could you tell me where Birmingham is on the biology table please?

NCTDN · 17/09/2021 21:42

@Piggywaspushed you might regret offering this! Please could you tell me the liberal arts league table? Thank you.

Piggywaspushed · 17/09/2021 21:43

I'll get back to you in the morning!

EwwSprouts · 17/09/2021 21:49

@Decorhate Great thanks.

@Monkey2001 It's typical, DS has had St Andrews top of his list for a year since a chat with the careers lady. Thanks I'll go nosey over there.

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 07:22

blue :-

Birmingham is 25= (with Leeds) this year , same as last year.

The big city universities all took a bit of a hammering in overall league tables this year, because, largely, of the student satisfaction metric. The Times puts this down to Covid. We asked about Covid when we went to Birmingham . Given it's been doing visits and things for a while (and I haven't read any negative news about it during the pandemic) I am surprised that Brum slid because of student satisfaction. Another factor suggested (which makes sense) is that students who go to big cities are actually also judging that. They are often choosing bright lights/big City lifestyles and were disappointed not to get it. Certainly campus unis in more remote locales fare better (although Lancaster and Aberystwyth and Loughborough have always done well on student satisfaction)

Birmingham's lowest score is for its research rating (38%) but that is true of every university - 40% seems to be around average. Its score for teaching quality is in the 70s and higher than Leeds.

Hope that helps.

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 07:23

NCTDN , frustratingly, subjects like LA don't feature in League Tables. I can look at individual subjects within it though, if there are already one or two specialisms in mind?

Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 07:27

Also blue, as you mentioned them upthread, I can tell you Sheffield is 11th for biology and Nottingham is 31st.

NCTDN · 18/09/2021 07:48

Mm m that's the problem with that course. Maybe English literature and Spanish?
Piggywaspushed · 18/09/2021 08:04

Can you remind me what unis you are looking at for / do Lib Arts and I can tell you where they are in rankings for those subjects in a bit.

BlueMarigold · 18/09/2021 08:09

@Piggywaspushed thank you so much for the details. It is good to know about Sheffield. It’s a shame she didn’t like the city. She liked Birmingham more due to the campus and the location. This makes me think that she will like Nottingham too because it looks nice in the photos. Can I be cheeky and also ask how Reading and Royal Holloway are doing?

NCTDN · 18/09/2021 08:33

@Piggywaspushed Durham Warwick Leeds Bristol. Thanks

Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 08:44

@BlueMarigold royal Holloway is at 37 down from 26 in 2021. Reading is at 63 down from 34 in 2021.

Delphigirl · 18/09/2021 08:50

@bluemarigold the bigger risers in bio sciences this year include Scottish unis (Glasgow edinb Dundee etc) , your and Sheffield from 19/22 to 10/11; Surrey from 32 to 20; Kent and Aston from mid 40s to mid 20s; and Nottingham Trent from 70 to 36
