He's relatively unusual in having created something quite impressive - yougov is pretty successful. I like politicians that have done something outside politics

Very true @SandyBayley!

Agree @SandyBayley. I quite like him. I work in an area in which housing and communities secretary is very involved. Was interested that Gove has replaced Jenrick - didn’t see that coming.

Isthisjustnormal · 15/09/2021 18:18

Humm, not exactly pleased with Zahawi but I suspect it could be worse: I used to work in market research so the yougov link is one I personally quite like!

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2021 18:34

I suppose I hanker after an Ed sec who isn't all about business and is actually interested and knowledgeable. But Gove was a car crash, so...

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2021 18:34

Could be worse. Culture got Dorries...

ealingwestmum · 15/09/2021 18:43

So true 😱

SandyBayley · 15/09/2021 18:45

@Piggywaspushed - it's worth remembering that SoS Education is also responsible for skills and that requires an interface with business.

It's my area of work and we desperately need interventions that will give us future employees with the right skills. Hence why I'm pleased to see someone with some business experience.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2021 18:54

I do know this. They should perhaps split it. Gav was really only interested in apprenticeships when he got the job so it didn't go how he wanted!

Schools is far and away the biggest bit though. They delegate it all to Nick Gibb in reality.

icanbewhatiwant · 15/09/2021 21:43

Is anyone going to the Sussex open day? I was going to book somewhere to stay. But Ds says he's had no confirmation or details via email. I don't want to book to stay if it doesn't go ahead. DH's daughter lives close to Brighton. The original plan was to stay with her. But their 4 bed rental has just been sold. They are looking to buy...but have gone into a 2 bed flat while they look. Ds2 could stay in his 5 year old nephews bedroom and I could sleep on the sofa. But I'd rather just book somewhere.

AnneOfCleavage · 16/09/2021 08:18

icanbe we booked on months ago (for Oct 2nd) too but have heard not a peep since. They said they'd contact nearer the time so perhaps it'll be end of this month 🤞🤞

icanbewhatiwant · 16/09/2021 08:24

@AnneOfCleavage thanks. It's not just Ds ignoring emails then.

Seeline · 16/09/2021 08:44

The ones we have booked on to so far have sent an email the week before so that we can book on to specific talks, tours etc. Only a couple sent an immediate acknowledgement that we had booked in the first place.....

20newnames · 16/09/2021 08:53

Anyone booked onto the Durham virtual event this Saturday? DS says he hasn’t been sent the promised timetable of events email so doesn’t know what talks are when. He said he re-registered yesterday too but hasn’t got anything.

Has anyone else heard anything?

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 16/09/2021 08:57

Nick Gibb has gone as Schools Minister ...who do we will be his replacement?

No idea, but I don't think he is a great loss.
Oblomov21 · 16/09/2021 14:23

Newnames, Durham, I'm booked on, but no 'promised timetable of events email'. Plus there is nothing to click on, no facility to book anything, so far.

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2021 14:30

Wow, just got in and saw that! That IS a big change.

20newnames · 16/09/2021 16:21

@Oblomov21 - We have completely different emails to that but I did find somewhere with a listing of times and lectures. You have to login at the link below, it just needs the email address you registered with. There is then a lobby with access to lots of pre-recorded stuff plus if you click on Auditorium it gives you the listing of live talks and you can add them to your schedule. (DS was not too interested in the 'love your library" one!)

Oblomov21 · 16/09/2021 16:39

How wierd!

NCTDN · 16/09/2021 20:27

Do you think the virtual open event will be any different information than the in person tours they did?

Piggywaspushed · 16/09/2021 21:34

Just booked Sheffield for 23 October, in person.

AnneOfCleavage · 16/09/2021 22:20

Just booked Oxford Brookes in person for a campus tour in Oct and an open day in Nov. If we've seen enough in Oct I'll cancel the Nov one as quite a way to go twice in a matter of weeks.

DD struggling with PS. Wants to do it all herself despite two friends admitting their dad/ mum are doing theirs. It's commendable but I don't think think it's punchy enough. Needs to stand out. She's done so much stuff and so it should be kick ass but it reads mediocre so think she needs to pad it out with examples and reflection but she struggles with that as has forgotten what she thought when she was doing her work experience. Can she fudge it a bit or does it have to be exactly what happened? School have given no feedback so she's a bit lost. Not sure how to help her as she's adamant it's got to be her work and words plus I wasn't there at her work experiences and volunteering ventures. Swear I'm going to be snowy white after this UCAS form gets submitted.

Monkey2001 · 16/09/2021 23:38

@AnneOfCleavage reflections definitely don't have to be historically accurate - nobody will know! It is good that she wants to do it, as the killer statement person said, that want to hear the applicant's voice coming through.

DS got UCAS predictions today, A*AA, I think we could have got the Maths A bumped up, but they are fine, so we won't bother. Deadline for us to pay and submit is 1st October, but he is just tinkering round the edges now, adding things like Head Chorister which he found out about today.

NCTDN · 17/09/2021 07:02

@Seeline has your DD done her PS? DD here has but it's 6000 words Shock Because liberal arts covers all sorts of elements, trying to fit everything in is nigh on impossible and now she's working out which bits are not as important.

Predictions: if a child was predicted BBB for example, is there any point applying to places asking for AAB or do unis just reject them straight away? DD hasn't yet got her predictions.
