Nettleskeins , my DS didn't do a work placement year although it would have helped professionally. He wanted to stay with housemates.
It did seem to take him oodles of applications to get a job but he has one and it's a good one. All in all, his shout probably helped him cope with pressures of uni. Hope that's the same for your DS.
By the way, no summer jobs, just a bit of travelling. His intense course was enough for him Wink

Bronzegate · 27/10/2019 21:32

He is home!

The good news: His health is good (both physically and mentally), much better than it was this time last year. He is happy with where he is living and doesn't feel isolated. His part-time job is going well.

The less good news: His attendance could be better and he is somewhat behind with the work.

Ginfordinner · 28/10/2019 07:03

Is he struggling with the work *Bronzegate?
DD's university makes attendance checks. Students have to use their passes on their lanyards when entering lectures.

Bronzegate · 28/10/2019 09:27

He isn't struggling with the level of the work, but is finding the increased volume of work (compared to the first year) difficult.

Due to his health issues, he doesn't have to attend all lectures (he has access to the PowerPoint and audio recording) but he is supposed to attend the tutorials and seminars.

He gets a bit behind, then decides that his time would be spent more efficiently studying at home rather than attending a particular lecture. Then misses something important they mentioned after the recorded part of the lecture finishes (e.g. start reading these books or extracts now).

Time management has always been challenging for him. He is improving slowly.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 28/10/2019 10:46

Bronzegate I think the increased volume of work compared to 1st year is part of dd's difficulties too. She has also found that listening to recorded lectures isn't always the best solution. In her case because if a student asks a question and there is a subsequent discussion the lecturer usually switches off the recording to make it more comfortable for students to contribute.
It is good that he is improving though and that his health is stable.

Unfortunately it isn't possible for dd to come home to study. Our local university doesn't teach her subject and anywhere else would be such a long commute that it would be unmanageable. She is definitely doing the right subject as she is passionate about it and even on her worst days wants to discuss her lectures.

UCU members have voted to strike for 8 days from 25 November. Does anyone know what this means for DS's course? If they are on strike then obviously they won't be teaching during that time. If he has assignments due during the strike, does he just submit them as normal and then they are marked when the staff return after industrial action? Or do they move the deadlines later?

Hardwickwhite · 05/11/2019 23:20

I suspect it is too early to tell. DD is due to start exams the week after and lectures that week were supposed to be revision based. I am sure they will announce plans in the next few days.

Hardwickwhite · 06/11/2019 19:16

DD got an email from uni this afternoon telling them it would be business as usual until further notice. That included coursework, exams and graduations. They said it could be a while till they know more.

I imagine for some it may not make much difference, depending upon contact hours/term dates etc. DD is not due to finish till the 19th though and has a relatively heavy contact schedule. Some of it is with PhD students though and I am not sure if they are involved. I suspect not.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/11/2019 21:53

I don't think it will create any issues for dd. It will be down to individual universities I guess as tohow they cope.

I suggested to DS that he must submit his work by the planned deadline, but that it might be late in being marked. He replied to say that's what normally happens anyway. Grin
