Uni with decent Support for Learning

Hi
My son is hoping to do Ancient History - he’s sitting A levels in 2020 so not sure of grades yet. Likely Bs/Cs but may squeeze an A somewhere!

He’s dyslexic and can struggle with organisation/focus (although the latter is improving (especially now he’s doing subjects he likes!) He got extra time in GCSEs and will get it again at A level.

Anyway a supportive attitude to SfL will be important for him.

Anyone got any experiences in this?

Thanks.

I'm currently a mature student at Huddersfield University. The Wellbeing and Disability department are, in my opinion, amazing. I have depression and anxiety and through them I have received so much support - computer packages to help me, a study mentor and they are readily available to speak to. They also supply computer packages for people who have dyslexia - they arrange for assessments to be done and advise you what would be required.

That’s great thank you. It’s brilliant they’re being so supportive. Good luck with the rest of your course 😊

DSS is at QUeens Belfast (geog on BBD). He is dyslexic. Through the student finance site you can apply for DSA and they will carry out an assessment at a centre close to where you live. He qualified for a funded laptop, funding for a weekly session with a dyslexia specialist tutor/mentor and alao upon speaking to student support at the uni he has the ET and also deadline extensions (which weren't) even on our radar at school.

Friend's son has severe CP and has been more than impressed with the support be got at Uni of Nottingham.

So help is out there. I would suggest he researches the courses/uni he is interested in first so he really knows whoch he prefers firat and then speak to the unis. They are really helpful and happy to speak on the phone.
