Loving the Exeter love! Grin

Good luck to all DC still doing exams!

TapasForTwo · 29/05/2019 13:56

We used to regularly take the train from Polsloe Bridge to Exmouth. The stations used to compete with each other in summer with their floral displays. Maybe they still do. I haven't been there for years.

Knotaknitter · 29/05/2019 16:14

DS has had his final assessment and has about three weeks to go to the end of term. There was a point where I did wonder whether he would finish the year but it's worked out well enough.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/05/2019 17:32

That's good Knot. Is he happy he's doing it?

DS1 is going back to university to collect the rest of his stuff tomorrow (and hopefully make sure his room is clean). The first year seems to have gone very quickly.

The group DS1 was originally planning to share with still haven't found anywhere to live, and one of them has decided not to carry on with his course.

DS1's decision to move in with his girlfriend for the second year initially took me by surprise, but I've come round to the idea. She'll be working full-time so will have to keep sensible hours, and she encourages him towards healthy lifestyle choices.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/05/2019 18:34

That's so grown up TheFirst! It sounds like a good solution. A way to stay balanced.

Tapas I don't know about Polsloe bridge station but Exmouth always has beautiful flowers and often enters Britain in Bloom.

TapasForTwo · 29/05/2019 22:48

We used to go to Topsham as well. The pub there did lovely lunches. I'm feeling all nostalgic.

marmiteloversunite · 29/05/2019 22:56

I love Topsham. It's a great little place to live. I keep moving closer to it. Would love to be a pensioner there.

Knotaknitter · 30/05/2019 07:51

Is he happy? I think if I asked him he'd say it was "alright I guess" He's certainly more happy than at the start of the year where every little thing was a source of anxiety.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/05/2019 08:09

Maybe happy isn't the right choice of word, often, just being is enough. I'm glad that his anxiety levels are lower. It's an exhausting way to live.

Dd has finished her exams but is staying on for a week or so to enjoy the end of first year.

She has been offered her Saturday job for the summer, 5 or 6 days a week and with a pay rise! She will still be able to attend the festivals she has booked but will not be able to waft around visiting university friends or having them here. Choices choices.

We visited Exeter last year. Loved the cathedral, well the grounds, but had a very disappointing pasty. Grin

marmiteloversunite · 30/05/2019 19:14

It was probably a Cornish pasty!! Grin

UrsulaPandress · 30/05/2019 19:17

Probs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/05/2019 20:33

I had an unexpectedly tasty one at Bristol station.

It's a tricky balance over summer. Work or a summer of fun. I remember one lovely summer where I spent weeks just reading out in the sunshine.

DD has gone in to her old school today to do some coaching/tutoring with some of the Y13s in advance of their exams. DD2 was most tickled to have to pay for DD1s lunch because of course it didn’t occur to her that her thumb would no longer work on the automated payment system Grin

TheFirstOHN · 03/06/2019 16:30

Ursula well done to her on the job offer.
DS1 has resumed driving lessons, and has a test date booked for July. He can drive; it's just a matter of whether or not his anxiety in test conditions will overwhelm him.

Nettleskeins · 03/06/2019 20:12

Exeter Open Day was good!! Wish I'd seen more of the city itself, the countryside seems idyllic though from our vantage point on top of a hill!!
Ds2 went to three lectures, but said he didn't think Ancient History was going to be his cup of tea...
British Rail annoys me though..booked tickets on our return journey only to find that it took us so long to reach our seats (15 minutes) due to crush and stupid platform information on which coach would be where, that an old lady and her 8 year old granddaughter were installed in them, by then all the empty seats were gone and we didn't have the heart to turf them out. AND the train had a ridiculous impasse in the middle which meant leaping out at Tiverton Parkway in search of Coach C and D...grrr. Ds2 of course managed to find a seat with the yuff. My seat next to a young lady was so loud from her wretched phone and headphones (young lady was asleep despite noise) that I ended standing all the way back to London..

Open Days are gruelling if satisfying.

Nettleskeins · 03/06/2019 20:15

I'm feeling depressed at ds1 and work/travel. He just won't commit to either, he is still at uni but term has finished, and he seems very loose endish. He neither wants advice nor seems to have any plan of his own. Very pleasant on the phone and in person but I get the feeling he is going to spend a lot of the holidays just hiding his room and us getting very frustrated.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/06/2019 20:32

It's good that ds2 discovered now that he's not going to be fond of Ancient History. Sounds like a horrid train journey though.

Has your ds1 totally run out of steam?

dd says hardly anyone seems to have jobs. I suspect thats actually more the reality for end of first year students, it's taken a lot of oomph to get to this point and there's actually precious little out there for them in terms of work.

My poor DH has to travel on that train every week as he works in London. Pays a fortune for a ticket and often had to sit on the floor next to the toilets! Last week though he had to sit next to Anne Widecombe!! Confused

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/06/2019 20:52

nooooo! Marmite! That's horrific. what was she like?

Nettleskeins · 03/06/2019 22:31

ha ha!
That's amazing re commutingMarmite I thought it was a fast train - must be because they miss out so many stations. I do like looking at train timetables - find all the permutations fascinating. run out of steam noted Kitten Grin
Ds1 once sat next to Bob Geldof on a plane without realising who he was. They had a nice chat Blush I'm sure he was grateful for ds's ignorance. I was behind, terrified that ds1 was suddenly going to go er your famous aren't you but I don't know who you are..

marmiteloversunite · 03/06/2019 23:27

Kitten she was very loud and on her mobile most of the time. She's obviously a bit deaf as she kept asking the caller to repeat things. DH rolled his eyes so she went out into the corridor although he could still hear her with his headphones on and the door shut. Her mobile phone ringtone is a cockerel crowing and she kept referring to the Brexit party headquarters.
That's all the info I got! Grin
