Went and saw picture etched on a local beach this morning for remembrance. A lot of people there. At Folkstone they had Wilfred Owen etched in sand.

The beaches looked amazing. Well done to Danny Boyle.

Bpisok - re ALIS (a few dozen posts ago now) we were given ALIS results but not predicted grades that they spew out!

bpisok · 11/11/2018 23:40

Progress here about Unis - DD has finally started talking about where she might like to visit. At least she is finally engaging - I expected a September panic so I am pleasantly surprised!!

I am list for words thinking about what your ancestors went through in WW1. (Not mine, they were either babies or over 35).
If there was another war, and they wanted either of my two boys, I couldn't bear to let them go. The story (on the film) of the tall 15 year old boy having a white feather stuck up his nose by a girl really got to me! She must have brought them out with her for the purpose. If I were his mother, she would have me to deal with!

AlexanderHamilton · 12/11/2018 13:50

The thread dropped off my active.

Brainmelt - I'm always here for audition talk (dh was conservatoire trained) and it is similar to dance/MT in some ways ecept dancers have the choice of whether to go at 16 (like my dd did) or 18 like the musicians will. I've got a friend with a ds the same age as our kids in lower 6th at Chets so she will keep me updated with the current stuff on the music scene as they navigate it all.

I'm thinking of going for a name change. Will I confuse people? It will still be musical theatre related.

Brainmelt · 12/11/2018 14:09

Thanks Alex Flowers ! This came up in another thread which may be of interest to you too, the UCAS conservatoire stats. Applications numbers versus actual admissions by instrument (includes dance), by college, by sex, etc:
www.ucas.com/data-and-analysis/ucas-conservatoires-releases/ucas-conservatoires-end-cycle-2017-data-resources

As long as your new name makes us think of you... Grin

whistl · 12/11/2018 16:05

Honestly, AH, yes it will! The only poster who I completely recognise now with a name change is TheFirst

AlexanderHamilton · 12/11/2018 16:30

You see Hamilton is so last year. Next year is Come From Away & the Book of Mormon tour!

whistl · 12/11/2018 16:37

Is hmcaswas still around? or teenmum60? I lost track... (send me a PM!)

Oratory1 · 12/11/2018 16:42

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 12/11/2018 17:25

PMed you both.

Soomaa · 12/11/2018 20:13

The thread goes so fast! I got lost a little bitWink

Cherryburn + brainmelt Congrats to your children. It's nice that their effort is awarded.

brainmelt, I'd love to read about yourv sons conservatoire route. I think it's great to have many different perspectives on this thread.

There were WWI events at my kids schools, too. They remembered the not only the ones who died during WW1, but all the people in the world who die in wars every day. I 'survived' the civil war in Somalia and my three older kids are born there. War is part of our family history and I'm thankful every day that my kids are safe now. And I feel with all the children, women and men who aren't.

DS got 97% at his end-of-topic test in Physics. Without much revision. He spent the weekend with his D&T coursework (mind mapping), working and with a new (female) friend Wink

TheFirstOHN · 12/11/2018 23:02

Soomaa he certainly has an excellent understanding. What a good start.

whistl · 13/11/2018 06:50

97%! Perfect understanding AND perfect exam technique already! Wow!

I'm feeling pleased with myself this morning. DS had some mechanics homework and there was a question that he had been completely stuck on for 2 days. I came along and offered to help. He said I wouldn't be able to do it as it's over 30 years since I last did them. A challenge! It took 10 minutes and a full A4 page of calculations but I solved it for him!
Now, he remembers it as he solved it! Which says something about him that I can't put my finger on but I'm not that comfortable with.

LooseAtTheSeams · 13/11/2018 07:38

Sooma - that's very impressive!! DS is having one of his intermittent organisational failings, ie leaving homework at home or not realising there was any. I only know because school emailed me and I've reminded him in no uncertain terms about using his planner after I found it under a pile of papers!
He's busy rehearsing for a school concert next week - they've even given him a timetable for rehearsals for the different groups he's in, which is an excellent idea!

Brainmelt · 13/11/2018 09:06

sooma very impressive. What a start!
loose I hear you. We have a concert tonight, another next week and school musical in three weeks. Who needs homework right? Grin

JugglingFromHereToThere · 13/11/2018 09:41

Conservatoire stats were very interesting and comprehensive - thanks Brainmelt
Interesting that nearly as many go to conservatoires as postgrads as go at 18/19.
So maybe that could be an idea for DS here. He could do a music degree, practice a bit more over those three years, and apply to conservatoire later on if things look that promising at that stage.
Of course he should practice more already if he's really interested in a career in music!
He is good but I feel the competitive pressure in music! Still his interest could certainly lead to some interesting opportunities and careers in a variety of areas.
And is contributing to his overall development too.
He plays trumpet and cornet - his last post was well received at his girlfriend's church on Sunday

Stickerrocks · 13/11/2018 09:50

Well done whistl too. Sooma how old were your DC when they moved to the UK?

We've had a really encouraging progress report for DD. It's quite funny being positively discouraged from attending a parents' evening. The college only invites parents they need to speak to and you can almost see the eye rolling of the person sending the general email to all parents reminding us that if we MUST see someone there are around 200 different hoops to jump through!

whistl · 13/11/2018 10:20

Stickerrocks it seems like your school starts a year or two earlier than most with disengaging from the parents.

This time two years from now, our involvement will not be welcome!

This is a bit of a "thing" with me because my mum tried to write a note to my university when I was in my first term there to explain that I wouldn't be in for a few days as I had to go away for a funeral. I was so embarrassed because she insisted that I take it in with me and find someone to give it to. I have been promising myself for over 30 years now that I will never do the same to my DC!

AlexanderHamilton · 13/11/2018 10:23

Dd's school was a private house that was turned into a military hospital during WW1. The sons of the house died I believe. The school at that time was just being established as a part time institution run from a local hotel ballroom.

Re: Conservatoire

When dh went there were many students at the nearby uni who shared teachers with the conservatoire and then went on to do postgrad afterwards.

AlexanderHamilton · 13/11/2018 10:25

Dd won't be applying to traditional uni at all as the course she is currently on is a Level 6 course. She may if she wishes (and probably will) top it up to a full degree by distance learning.

Stickerrocks · 13/11/2018 10:47

Whistl There are over 2,000 in each year group and over 30 maths classes in each year. It's hard enough keeping track of the students, let alone thinking of something to say to each parent. DD's old school used to give each pupil in each year a ranking for attitude etc - imagine trying that for the 6th form!
