I had a really excellent head for alcohol. I don't think I ever threw up or had a serious hangover. But then I don't even know what Snakebite and Black is! I drank wine mostly and then I had a taste for bitter in my twenties.

Ds is still ill. I think he is trying to get out of this social event as he keeps changing his story. First it is vomiting 11 times and then it is no, cannot possibly be food poisoning, next there is mention of lectures he has attended whilst vomiting 11 times Shock I don't think I am ever going to sign him up for any family event again, although it is such a pity, these cousins from abroad would have loved to have met him. His shyness is there same as ever, under layers of karaoke and clubbing. I should have smelt a rat when he asked me 3 times how he was going to get there from the bus stop (it is 5 mins from the bus stop) and who exactly was going to be there. (Not quite sure, but lots of girls he has never met)

TheFirstOHN · 23/11/2018 16:41

I drank far too much cider in my first year at university, mostly in an attempt to keep up with a new group of friends who drank a lot.

I didn't drink snakebite & black (although others did) but there was a drink called a Blastaway which was a bottle of diamond white cider mixed with a tropical flavoured alcopop. It tasted much like Lilt, was very thirst-quenching and was sold by the pint, but each one contained about 4 units of alcohol.

TheFirstOHN · 23/11/2018 16:44

The alcopop used (Castaway) isn't made any more, but apparently you can still recreate the Blastaway experience:

1 part Vodka
1 part Peach schnapps
2 parts Orange juice
1 part Passion fruit juice
3 parts Cider
1 part White wine

TheFirstOHN · 23/11/2018 16:50

OK, maybe a pint contained a bit more than 4 units...

Knotaknitter · 23/11/2018 17:00

The problem with that recipe TheFirst is that it's too much like effort. Six ingredients and measuring does not compare with opening two bottles and pouring them into the same glass, especially after the first one.

I was a snakebite girl myself, I never knew anyone have it with blackcurrant though.

UrsulaPandress · 23/11/2018 17:46

My posh southern friend introduced me to Gin & Tonic with a dash of lime. I still drink it now.

Nettleskeins · 23/11/2018 18:26

The first time I ever went on a "date" my date who was very dapper and old fashioned drank gin and tonic. I was horrified at his fuddy duddyness - surely only old people drank such a thing? and duly reported back to my friends that he was undateable. It was mean of me. He turned out highly successful in later life. Alas my drinks radar was not good.
My second date ( a year later) offered me something which contained cream cointreau and sparkling something or other and a parasol. possibly strawberries in there..

captainoftheshipwreck · 23/11/2018 19:07

What about the third? Grin

starfleet · 23/11/2018 21:20

The rock society night was a Blastaway drinking night - there were only about 10 people in the Rock Soc although they seemed to put away enough for about 50 people.

Malibu was brought out in crates for the Bhangra Soc - there were hundreds in that. Friday and Saturday was always 2 bottles of Pils lager for £1.50. It was very cheap and not surprising people drank a lot at those prices!

Nettleskeins · 23/11/2018 22:04

Captain good point. I think by then I was onto Real Ale.

I take it back about ds1, he sounds still very ill. He has just been sleeping and said he has eaten nothing for a while. He cannot face the bus till tomorrow although he says he is coming back then. He keeps switching his phone off which doesn't help with the information flow..Hmm He is determined it isn't food poisoning. But perhaps it is a virus following excess alcohol intake.

Knotaknitter · 23/11/2018 22:40

Nettles mine was vomiting for a week and he doesn't drink. It took the full might of the NHS to stop that one after he'd been throwing up every couple of hours for six days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/11/2018 23:07

sounds like there is a nasty vom bug.

@Knotaknitter not sure how you drink snakebite without the black. Mind you, I soon went off it when working at pub and landlord had brought scrumpy for the shut in. Snakebite kind of congealed almost jelly like and I realised that perhaps it wasn't the best option. Mind you I don't think my alternative of gin with a dash of lemonade (cheaper than bottle tonic) any better!

Knotaknitter · 24/11/2018 09:04

I never drank snakebite again after leaving University. I can't say I ever got hungover from it (not even after the six pint evening where we had to carry a friend home) unlike the incident in my supposedly mature years with the feuerzangenbowle. If I spelled it correctly there are videos but it involves pouring hot rum over a sugar cone, lighting it and the resulting flaming sugar drips into the heated wine below. There is much drama, especially when you think you are going to set fire to the cooker hood. The friend who said "all the alcohol burns off" was very wrong. That was one of my very few hangovers and I have to say that I deserved it.

For anyone who has that sort of party I can recommend it, much more theatrical than a flaming Christmas pudding. Back in the day the supply of sugar cones was a problem but with internet shopping I suspect that they are easier to get hold of now.

Knotaknitter · 24/11/2018 09:09

Amazon has all you need, no longer do you need German friends to get the sugar cones

LoniceraJaponica · 24/11/2018 09:46

Thanks for asking Kitten. This thread has dropped from TIO. I should add it to threads I’m watching.

DD’s UCAS application has been submitted. Her old school are being really helpful and supportive. I dropped the cheque off at school this week, and the application is just waiting for the school reference. DD has already had an acknowledgement from UCAS.

Work is still going well, and DD has made a friend there. She is her supervisor, and DD expressed an interest in staying on after Christmas as there will be one vacancy as someone has left. The supervisor said that she hoped it would be DD. I’m not sure how much say she has, but we will see. DD has shown willing about swapping shifts and doing extra shifts, so I hope it will reflect well on her.

She went to visit a friend last weekend and it was a bit boring for her. She went after work and was really tired when she got there, but thought she should woman up and go out. She walked to the pub with her friend's flatmates while her friend was behind them with her friends from her course.

The flatmates don't like the coursemates and didn't want them along, and DD had thought there were only going to be a couple of coursemates. She really don't like being in big groups of people. The second group lagged behind so much that they lost them. The flatmates decided that they didn't really want to be out and decided to go back to the flat. DD couldn't see her friend and her goup and didn't want to be left on her own in a strange town so she went back to the flat and went to bed early.

Her friend rolled up at 4.30 very drunk and stayed in bed most of the next day. DD spent most of the day on Messenger to me and her boyfrind (yes, he is still on the scene). The weekend got better after the friend finally surfaced.

Sorry for the essay.

Knotaknitter · 24/11/2018 11:18

Lonerica I would be considering how much of a friend the friend really is. "Come up and visit me and I will ignore you and go off in another group, leave you with strangers in a strange town and then leave you on your own the next day too" That would be my last visit I think.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/11/2018 11:36

The friend has been recently diagnosed with autism and is sometimes unaware of how she is with people.

DD is pretty friendly with the flatmates as she has been to visit before.

Knotaknitter · 24/11/2018 13:39

That's not so bad then if she knew the flatmates already, not quite such a dire visit. I'm glad that the job is going well and hope she gets the place after Christmas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/11/2018 15:18

Glad to see you about Lonicera :) That did not sound like a fun trip at all. I'm glad her work is going well and that she's got her form in. It sounds like she's feeling much more ready this time?

Knot that sounds like the sort of party that would have me hyperventilating Grin

Been shopping for dds favourite foods today. We bring her home for Christmas next weekend.

Dd is home for the weekend. Late night at a gig. Bounced into my bed at 4am. Leaving lights on all over the house.

Happy days.

ds1 is finally home. He seems fine but a bit thin. But then he was a bit overweight when he left for university. So I don't want to tell him this, but he looks very handsome thin [ner] Now playing Fifa with his brother after a small portion of roast chicken roast potatoes and peas. Seems like innocent fun compared to his life on the mean streets...

Nettleskeins · 25/11/2018 19:29

ds says he now staying till Tuesday (no lectures till then) so that he can have "home cooking". We've been to see relatives this afternoon, it has all been quite relaxed. Ds2 hasn't been quite so territorial this time. Ds is eating tiny meals compared to the old days, his stomach seems to have shrunk. However, the right food is tempting him. Platefuls of avocado, apple crumble, stew. anything which isn't a sandwich or a pizza!
