If I lie down my glasses go sideways. They are already held together with a paperclip. And sometimes I just want to shut my eyes but still follow the story. When I was at University I had a lovely friend who used to sit by my bed and read Winnie the Pooh to me.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/10/2018 13:15

That's the only advantage for me being short sighted. I can read without glasses. I hate being short sighted, but every cloud...

Ursula the library app is on my phone. I use Bluetooth to link it to the car so I can listen to a book while driving, I link it to downstairs Alexa during the day and upstairs Alexa when I go to bed. The app has a timer so when I go to bed I add a bookmark and then set the timer for half an hour. When I come to use it the next day I go back to the bookmark I set and skip forward until I find where it was that I lost the plot. I also have a set of headphones in my handbag just in case I need them.

Knittinganewme · 31/10/2018 15:14

I do sometimes just listen to it through the phone speaker because the car sometimes refuses to have anything to do with my phone for reasons I can't fathom.

I feel like a tech whizz with my kindle. I was very impressed when I tried to order a book from Amazon to be told I already had it. I did eventually find it. And lots of others I didn’t know were there.

MsAwesomeDragon · 31/10/2018 17:17

knitting Flowers for the anniversary. It's a tough time, and you've got through the most difficult bit (according to my friend who lost her husband a few years ago).

I also love my audiobooks. I listen like knitting via the library app on my phone. Mostly in the car, but the car radio won't talk to my phone to play audiobooks so I listen through the phone speakers, which is ok. I also have headphones all over the place, a pair in the car, a pair in my coat pocket, a pair next to my bed, etc. I read the Kindle in bed though (I have to take my glasses off to read, so lying down is great). DH removes the Kindle when I start snoring Halloween Blush

Your audio book system sounds great, but could you explain it again in English? Wink

I dislike reading in bed now that my dig into my nose! Oh for the sight of a 20 yo!

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 31/10/2018 18:09

*my glasses dig...

captainoftheshipwreck · 31/10/2018 18:24

Knitting
that is AWESOME Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 31/10/2018 18:58

You can increase the font size on a kindle so you can read without glasses (she says hoping to sound helpful)

UrsulaPandress · 31/10/2018 19:00

I’d have about 6 words per page.

captainoftheshipwreck · 31/10/2018 19:09

But that's ok on a kindle. Think how thick it would be if it was a book Grin

UrsulaPandress · 31/10/2018 19:18

I’d get rsi in my finger.

starfleet · 31/10/2018 19:20

Thanks knitting.

I usually fall asleep with my kindle propped up by my face. I tend to wake up suddenly when it falls down and hits me on the nose. They are vicious things.

I was listening to a Book at Bedtime by Sarah Perry. Now we did her for our bookclub once, and we weren't that enthusiastic any of us, but to hear another book by her read by Greta Scacchi was like entering a different zone of imagination. Somehow my brain doesn't quite bring characters to life in the same way as an audio book version does. And the suspense..when you get the pauses and the different voices of the characters..
Still, I am scared of audiobooks..I'm frightened of hearing the more sensational/violent bits spoken..Blush I would never listen to anything over a 12 rating, unless it was very carefully dramatised. I think words that are written are not always designed to be spoken aloud.

we've been giving out sweets to the neighbourhood this evening and ds has been frightening little children with his Dr who monster (from a long forgotten series) It is a sombre time though All Hallows Eve, it feels as if we need things to cheer us up like silly sweeties and costumes and meeting the neighbours' little ones. I've decided I hate people saying "thinking of you" Knitting in most contexts, I much prefer it when they tell me funny things or listen to my day/troubles in great detail Hmm

who has seen the Annie Albers exhibition at the Tate yet about weaving? Is it any good?

Nettleskeins · 31/10/2018 21:16

Party Dresses by Marina Rinaldi (for ample ladies) keep flashing up on my mumsnet Ad Bar. The latest one they offered was over a £1,000 Shock. I clicked on it out of curiosity to see what could be worth so much, only to find it was sold out in every size except a 12. And now I'm getting reams of party dresses of what I would call Prom style (clearly from when I shopped for dd (16) It is quite irritating they are all so lovely and none of them would fit me...or suit me..aged 50.(frothy blue lace that sort of thing)

Knittinganewme · 31/10/2018 21:53

Ellen I have no idea how it works but it is fully idiot proof. I can browse books, search by title or author and then magically it appears in my phone. I can set bookmarks, have it read to me at different speeds (without it getting more high pitched) and skip forward or back by 30 seconds (or drag the play bar along for big chunks of rewind). If you just play it through the speaker on the phone that is all you need to do but if you have access to a better speaker then the sound quality is better.

My friend has been paying £7 a month for a single book on Audible, the library service is free and she can have as many books as she can listen to but only one at once.

I spent my professional career skip reading long documents and still don't give the written word my full consideration. If I'm reading I get the plot but slide over descriptive passages. There is no doing that with an audiobook, you are going to consider every single word and at a much slower speed than reading speed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/10/2018 22:28

I wish they made bigger screen kindles :(

I had no idea you could get audiobooks from the library online. And kindle books too :-O
My library card is too old for the system to recognise so I've had to re register.

Good grief! I am so so glad dd doesn't have to go through that. It looks very stressful for students who have only really just arrived.

OP posts:
LoniceraJaponica · 01/11/2018 08:58

It does seem rather soon to have to decide who to share a flat with for a year when the students have hardly had any time to cement any friendships.

Sigh, I expect DD will be doing this next year. My worry is that she may not have met anyone she wants to flatshare with, or who wants to flatshare with her.

ShanghaiDiva · 01/11/2018 10:09

Lonicera
am sure she will find her people when she starts next year.
Ds doesn't drink and hates clubbing, but two of the others in his flat are similar and they go to the pub for Sunday lunch (very civilised), go the gym, play cards, cook together etc.

Knittinganewme · 01/11/2018 11:35

DS doesn't drink, would pay not to go clubbing and has failed to show interest in any of the many societies. He is a bit of a catch in that he cleans, washes dishes, does the recycling and empties bins (not that he does any of that at home) but because he doesn't socialise it restricts the number of people that he knows. It hasn't crossed his mind yet that he'll need to find something for next year but I am not giving it a second thought. I doubt he'll end up living in a box and there are worse things for a parent to be worried about.
