Third
Dd has a boy in his flat who cooks but doesn’t clean up...dd said it appears his mum has done everything for him as he also seems to brag about his money a lot.

Well done to your dd loni

catslife · 25/09/2018 15:53

Still not much change happening on the notgoingtouni front. Another application completed and sent off. hoping something positive happens soon.

Did anyone think to add disinfectant to the uni lists. Sterilisation tablets (the type used for babies bottles work well).
Personally though thethird I would go for the sort of system we use camping. So all used crockery/cutlery in washing up bowl in room unless clean and put away!

TheThirdOfHerName · 25/09/2018 17:04

catslife that sounds very sensible.

HesMyLobster · 25/09/2018 17:22

Ewww Third I would have to throw them away too - there's no getting rid of that thought once it's planted. Same with your glass kitten - just get rid!!

Lonicera - great news on the interview, best of luck to your DD.

Love hearing all the settling in stories. Glad most seem happy so far - hope those with niggles get things sorted soon.

DD arrived safely on Sunday and seems to be enjoying herself so far.

2 tough, full days of intense Latin teaching, but she's made friends on her course and is enjoying getting stuck back in to learning.

There's a "YouTube famous" student-blogger who does her subject, that DD has followed avidly for the past couple of years - guess who sat next to her at dinner last night?!
DD said she was completely star struck for about a minute but once they got talking she was lovely and has given her loads of great tips and advice.

Today she has had to dodge a film-crew around her college all day as they are filming an episode of Endeavour there.

So an exciting couple of days!

FantasyAndHope · 25/09/2018 18:42

lobster
Is it jack Edwards? Dd is always watching them.

HesMyLobster · 25/09/2018 18:57

Not Jack (although she watched him quite a bit when she wanted to go to Durham! Wink)

It's "Molly at Oxford" I don't know her actual name! Blush

GnomeDePlume · 25/09/2018 20:19

Ooo glad to hear they're filming more Endeavour!

DD2 has joined the Chemistry society and had her first 'proper' day. Coming back at the weekend for her brother's birthday which is nice of her.

TheThirdOfHerName · 25/09/2018 20:38

The plate and knife have been thrown away and I'm going to send spares up with his girlfriend when she visits him in a couple of weeks. Spoke to him on the phone this evening for the first time since we dropped him off. It gave me a much better sense of how he's doing than his brief replies to my texts. He has made friends on his corridor and the social side of things is going well. He has also bought a bus pass, joined the gym and bought a mop (in case any future guests vomit again).

Nettleskeins · 25/09/2018 20:45

Third your ds sounds thoroughly sensible and competent. I wouldn't be worrying much about his ability to handle things, and mop savvy into the bargain!
*Lobster" you've pointed out the most important thing, getting stuck into the actual work is going to be very satisfying for our new students Smile Freshers is a bit distorting.

I've still got a large backlog of things to organise and sort and the twins are keeping me busy, dd is ruching and smocking away for textiles A level and ds is spouting politics. Not much time to wonder about ds. but next week I may begin to pine and wonder whether I can make an excuse to deliver some items he has forgotten, like tuxedos

TheThirdOfHerName · 25/09/2018 20:48

DS1 is finding the introductory/welcome lectures pointless & frustrating ("How many different ways can they say 'make the most of this opportunity'?") and wants to actually start the course.

littledrummergirl · 25/09/2018 22:55

Starfleet being vegetarian I can honestly say that if someone put meat products in my frying pan I would throw the biggest hissy fit ever pursuade them to replace it.
One of the things Ds1 no longer has to worry about is which Saucepans /utensils are the correct ones for meat products. Smile
I'm not sure of my reaction if someone had vomited in the kitchen let alone on my things, but I think they would be replaced sharpish.
I wonder how Ds1 is getting on with his washing up? It's never been his favourite job although I did see a couple of pairs of socks hanging on his drying rail in a picture he sent us. Maybe he had been practicing hand washing. Wink

Downeyhouse · 26/09/2018 05:25

Morning all,

Enjoying reading all the settling in stories and hope Fantasy your daughters situation improves.

Well I dropped ds on Saturday and have had 3 one word messages and one 10 second phone call!!!!

So I don’t have any idea of how he is!!!
Smile

Am going with no news is good news.

He left me a copy of his induction programme and he had back to back sessions all day Monday and yesterday.
Today is busy again but Thursday is a totally free day - I will sit on my hands until then and then try to Have a proper chat with him.

Lectures start on Monday.

Ds2 and I are trundling along. He is 14 and has just started year 10. He is a lasy blighter so I have to watch him mile a hawk to make sure he does his homework. I fear these gcse years are going to be looooooonng.

Am missing ds1s adult company. But we will get there.

FantasyAndHope · 26/09/2018 13:06

third
Dd said similar about her induction

Dd made an effort last night with the people in her halls and dd said it’s like being back at school again with the skinny popular girls and the guys liking that vibe. There’s about 4 people she likes who are over the drinking thing.
Dd was also saying that on the way to the kitchen she heard a boy arguing with his girlfriend over following girls on Instagram and apparently he’s in a mood.
She hopes she can get a move out

Nettleskeins · 26/09/2018 15:41

ds sent a text to another family member mentioning complaining how cold it was outside and how he thought he had flu. He is doing a lot of walking.
I've now sent him two thermal vests a merino zip up jumper and a pair of corduroy trousers (he only has jeans and a ripped cotton pair) without asking his opinion. Blush
I can see it is going to be a series of mindgames actually guessing what he needs at any particular time. I don't think it will have occurred to ds that there is a way to be warmer, ie wear more layers. He has a phobia about being too hot too, makes things difficult, like one of those toddlers that won't put on their coat in the hall, gets outside and turns blue in the playground.

Nettleskeins · 26/09/2018 15:47

Fantasy I think everyone shows off/makes a point of being cool at the beginning but unlike school there are far more people to choose from and you are not stuck with them every minute of the working day. The joy of all those Societies is that you find people you wouldn't otherwise meet, who share your interests.

I looked at the Facebook page for ds's Fresher's Fair, thinking I might catch a glimpse of his face in the official photos. No luck but it is soo busy, I'm not surprised he hasn't had time to contact me or give me a blow by blow account of anything [except his duvet drying]

Downeyhouse · 26/09/2018 16:28

Ds called!

Had a lovely chat and he updated me.

Food was rubbish first 2 nights but is now better (is in catered halls).

Has another student on his corridor who is a native French speaker so he is delighted as does not want to lose his language skills (he was in a bilingual school). The French kid is delighted to not have to speak English all day. So a win win.

He had an early night last night (midnight) and skipped the Freshers party. Said 1/2 the Hall did not go as they all already exhausted.

Went to sports trials and met someone he had played against in several international competitons around Europe. They are both British but grew up abroad (small world).

Sounded happy as Larry. And full of energy.

I feel better had been missing our chats.

UrsulaPandress · 26/09/2018 16:33

DD facetimes me a couple of times a day which is lovely. Keeps me in the loop of her life so to speak.

Is the duvet dry yet Nettles?

Nettleskeins · 26/09/2018 17:17

who knows? If only I could facetime the duvet: I'm sure it would have tales to tell...Hmm

Ds has just texted me thanking me profusely for the vests. which have not even arrived, but the thought of them was too much for him to stay silent any longer...

Downeyhouse · 26/09/2018 18:14

**FaceTime the duvet

Grin
TheThirdOfHerName · 26/09/2018 18:39

Imagine if we'd told them three months ago that they would be so enthusiastic about mops and vests!

PandaG · 26/09/2018 19:13

Lovely to catch up with all the settling in stories. DS doesn't go until Saturday...it seems such a long time since the results, and even longer since he did any serious study. He has had preparatory mathsy questions to do, and he was horrified at how rusty some of his skills had become since June.

As a family we are involved in the student work at our church, DS has taken a lead on the the sound and visuals for the last 3 years, even though he wasn't an actual student. Last night he made sure one of the other students he had trained was ok with the kit, then at the end of the meeting the students prayed for him as he leaves (though he will be back in time for the Christmas party!). I was so moved, they were saying goodbye to him, and I will be saying goodbye in 3 days. I cried my eyes out...I'm sure it is ok that he knows we will miss him, but we are so excited for him to go and do what he wants to do.

UrsulaPandress · 26/09/2018 19:24

Result. DD and I can fall out over FaceTime

Happy Days. Wink

marmiteloversunite · 26/09/2018 19:28

Hi. DD seems to be settling ok. She has been socialising with different groups of students but not really her flatmates. They are fine and tidy but not party animals. She seems to have given herself a midnight curfew as she gets too tired afterwards.

DD was a bit panicky at the start of the week as she developed a sore throat and has singing auditions tomorrow. She is feeling a bit better now and is meeting her tutor tomorrow morning. I have suggested she tell her about my cancer in case she has a wobble at some point.

I have had a lot of texts and a FaceTime call most days which is nice. I think she will be happy when she can get into everything properly next week. She has signed up to the operatic society and will join the rowing at freshers fair on Friday.

So basically she is doing ok and I feel really proud of her. She has even cleaned her toilet! Grin

UrsulaPandress · 26/09/2018 19:35

I'd live DD to join the rowing society but she wasn't having it.

When are your results marmite?

I'm off to the docs to have a dodgy mole on my boob scraped on Friday. There's always something.

marmiteloversunite · 26/09/2018 19:46

Hope that goes ok Ursula! Results on Monday morning. Still got drain in and v sore/swollen. On antibiotics too. First lot I was allergic to but on different ones now. Been a very long week here. So happy that DD1 is ok though.
