Following on from the GCSE 2018 threads as our DC enter year 12.
This the first thread in our new home in further education

Maybe a bit more sensitivity would be better, actually. We don't all have 7,8 and 9 achieving DC, remember.

AlexanderHamilton · 10/09/2018 19:36

If it’s a similar format to French then Dds teacher also said only speaking & writing is worth a review. The other papers are more of a it’s either right or wrong whereas those two there is more scope.

But annoying for you.

ShalomJackie · 10/09/2018 19:51

But this is a space where we do celebrate any child's success and is the safest place where I am allowed to be pleased with my 9-7 child whereas it was okay in real life to say DS1 got 2 Bs and 7 Cs because that's not boastful but I am loathe to say what DS3 got because I am bragging!

We all appreciate the differences in our children, the differences in their marks and what is a success to one may not be to another. That is what has been really nice about this thread. All are welcome, every success celebrated.

Oratory1 · 10/09/2018 19:54

I really don’t think any offence was meant, particularly when the comment was made by the poster who had probably been consistently most sensitive and humble of all of us.

Just different actions (and reactions) are relevant to different DC

LimitIsUp · 10/09/2018 20:05

I don't think anything I say to explain further will help to get the wider point that I am trying to make (about the thread in general) across - it will just come across snarky/ adversarial so best left there.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 10/09/2018 20:19

And I'm sorry. I read that 'you are a bit oversensitive' out of context. I hadn't realised it was a direct answer. On its own it seemed rather blunt.

whistl · 10/09/2018 20:35

@LimitIsUp I don't really like how this is going, so I'd like to try again, if that is ok with you?

Reading back my original comment - the get rid of the 6 comment - I could have expressed it differently and been more sensitive to the broad church that we are. Instead i just thought of it in the context of DS's grades, and replied in the sense that there is an odd one out. I'm sorry that I offended you.

Oh goodness me. What's the equivalent of posting a photo if a prom dress/blue suit & brown shoes shot going to be this term? I know, it's going to be asking for an update on the Westiepoo or asking Terf how she got on at work today.

One of my new students is only two years older than our bunch and is doing an apprenticeship rather than the traditional post grad entry. I couldn't help feeling old.

LimitIsUp · 10/09/2018 20:59

"Instead i just thought of it in the context of DS's grades, and replied in the sense that there is an odd one out"

Its fine - I do get that, we are all interpreting things contextually which is why I then related that comment to my dd and thought 'hang on - a 6 is just fine'. I do now understand that you weren't intending to imply otherwise.

And I also agree with oratory that you've been a rock on this thread, and I have a lot of time for you insights and advice.

Stickerrocks · 10/09/2018 21:00

Limitisup whereabouts did the half marathon set off from? I can't run for toffee (although I did break into a sweat winning a tennis match yesterday) so it may not have been on my radar but I didn't see any publicity for it until you all started chatting about it. It would have been quite a nice day to have gone out to cheer you all on.

whistl · 10/09/2018 21:02

I found mumsnet mates on my settings yesterday. It would have been perfect for those prom dress photos as it allows you to show photos to a limited audience. Now all we need is a time machine.

Sticker - its starts from Brockenhurst - New Park Showgroundwww.newforestmarathon.co.uk/#top
Pop along next year. There is also a 5k if you can be tempted. Did your dd get on well at college today?

Twinplusone · 10/09/2018 21:24

For those thinking about open days, DDs college told us about the imaginatively titled www.opendays.com

Stickerrocks · 10/09/2018 21:38

Must have been a good route - did you spot any snuffling pigs let out for the acorns or deer?

I think for our half term visits we're simply going to take a look at locations rather than try to visit properly. If we actually arranged a campus visit and said how much we liked it, DD would automatically refuse to apply on principle! Her current criteria seems to be to pick anywhere involving a ridiculous journey. We've got a collection of degrees from York, Durham, Oxford, Cambridge, Swansea, Aberdeen, Sheffield Southampton and London, so she won't be short of people to ask for advice.

hmcAsWas · 10/09/2018 21:40

No pigs. Just one solitary pony!

ShalomJackie · 10/09/2018 22:00

Where ia mumsnet mates?

bpisok · 10/09/2018 22:08

Ok - so to lighten the mood..... here's Westiepoo.

GCSE '18s (19) - New Beginnings?
bpisok · 10/09/2018 22:10

She has been as good as gold - house training a huge success BUT she's scared of her own reflection and barks at the patio door when it gets dark..... ho hum.

BlueBelle123 · 10/09/2018 22:13

But she is soooo cute Smile

Stickerrocks · 10/09/2018 22:13

Well that's done the job for me. I always like the idea of having a dog, but our jobs would make it impossible unless we paid for doggy-daycare, which would defeat the whole point of the pup.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 10/09/2018 22:13

She’s lovely bpisok Bear

BlueBelle123 · 10/09/2018 22:14

Shalom if you go to your settings its in there, just looked as I didn't know it existed...I presumed I just didn't have any mates but I see you have to add them Grin

Terf2Terf · 10/09/2018 22:51

I survived!
The NHS is a strange thing GrinGrin So organised in places and so utterly inconsistent in others. Anyway I met about 25 - all very friendly - people, don't remember any of their names, drank a lot of coffee and saw a lot of patient letters from hospitals/consultants. Steep learning curve and my brain is exhausted. I don't have my own desk yet and I get an ID card on Friday.

The westiepoo is so very cute! I went to a party yesterday and the golden retriever who lives at the party house kept trying to lick my knees (I was in a dress and bare legs) - owner said it has a thing for moisturiser. Please train Westipoo not to do that to women!!!

whistl · 11/09/2018 05:15

Hope this works https://www.mumsnet.com/member/mates

I've never used it. I think it might be a bit of legacy development that never really took off, or it could be the busiest part of the site and everyone has been having a party without me! Who knows?!
Anyway, from the description, I think it would be a better place to share outing photos and maybe keep a record of name changes that aren't meant to be private on the threads.

whistl · 11/09/2018 05:18

Terf well done on the new job! I'm in awe of you. (and I can totally relate to the challenges of remembering 50 new names all at once! Thank goodness for ID cards on lanyards!
