I've done some MOOCs. I'm not sure if I have any advice to give though.

NoHaudin now that is encouraging!

NoHaudin, glad to hear everything has turned up and that your DD is settling in.

Dare I ask what MOOCs are please? I did wonder for a minute if they were some sort of mind altering substance then realised I couldn't spell altering!

HesMyLobster · 10/09/2018 22:21

NoHaudin that sounds like very good news, must be a huge relief to hear she's feeling so upbeat and mixing.
I suppose that's all any of us are hoping for over the next few weeks.

Lonicera I have no experience of MOOCs (had to google Blush) but I think anything dc can do to demonstrate interest in a subject is a good thing, especially if she learns from and enjoys it.

DD has had her most productive day for weeks!
She's had her Men ACWY jab and got a printout of her immunisation record from gp.
She's registered at Uni GP
She's opened her student bank account.
She's completed and sent her form for student ID card
She's registered for all the freshers events (including a parents afternoon tea - hooray! Thought she might accidentally forget that one!)
She had an opticians appointment and changed delivery address for her next batch of lenses.
She's booked an appointment to get her haircut tomorrow (first time in over a year! Shock)
She contacted the accommodation manager at her college about possibly (hopefully) being allowed to arrive a day early.

Phew! Think it probably has something to do with her boyfriend being away for a few days but I'll take it!

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/09/2018 22:29

Great news NoHaudin. I'm glad she's got helpful and friendly people around her to help her out.

Knitting I'm sorry the grandparents aren't very nice. Family are supposed to care about the whole family, not just the golden child, and it's a really shit situation when they don't Flowers

Dd's "prize" at the prize giving was a progress award, which appears to be a piece of paper, congratulating her on her progressHmm. I feel duped into wasting 2 hours sitting through a gazillion kids having their names read out and getting a round of applause. I was hoping for cash or a book token, like she got as prizes in y7 and 8.

HesMyLobster · 10/09/2018 22:35

Ah Dragon that does sound like a bit of a swizz. DD's school does slips of paper in all other years, but yr13 prizes are hefty Amazon vouchers - defo worth the hours in a sweaty Hall!
Of course what we should be saying is it's just lovely to receive recognition for all that hard work . . Wink

Nettleskeins · 10/09/2018 22:42

Knitting they are fools and when he's centre stage peforming brilliantly in something just don't even tell them about it HmmAngry Maybe they are jealous of his success...I don't know, they actually seem cruel to behave like this to you. We will all be surrogate grannies on here for you instead.
haudin sounds like she has found some friends!

another battle with ds today. I'm not finding this easy. He just is so combative about everything, short of just not speaking to him at all, it is difficult to communicate!! He thanked me profusely for ordering some saucepans for him and some plates and cutlery, which we will pick up when we get there (Click and Collect) Luckily my whimsical order of the Hydrangea biscuit tin and matching cup was out of stock. I'm paying him back for not bothering to choose things by choosing things I like, like a Royal Wedding Mug.

marmiteloversunite · 10/09/2018 22:46

That's hilarious Nettles. I can just see him with a pink unicorn duvet and pink fairy lights because he has annoyed you! Grin

Nettleskeins · 10/09/2018 22:55

well, the duvet he has refused to change. He is bringing it [blue checks] with him. Clearly he had suspicions.

TheThirdOfHerName · 10/09/2018 22:57

HesMyLobster that is very impressive!

TheThirdOfHerName · 11/09/2018 10:11

DS1 is on a roll today (possibly inspired by HesMyLobster's DD):

  • Requested repeat prescriptions to see him through until he is registered with a GP at university.
  • Arranged insurance for DSA laptop.
  • Signed up to have a peer mentor.
  • Emailed the university to give them permission to contact DH or me if they're concerned about his health or wellbeing.
  • Downloaded a budgeting app.
  • Started using a to-do list app.

I am actually quite impressed.

flatmouse · 11/09/2018 10:36

Is the budgeting app any good? Not sure DS would use it would be good to suggest?

GnomeDePlume · 11/09/2018 12:12

DD2 has had an invite to an awards thing at her school for the 23rd but as she will be away at university a polite decline will be sent.

Personal administration seems to be largely completed.

Saturday is getting close!

UrsulaPandress · 11/09/2018 12:28

Well a week alone at home has proved that she may encounter some challenges when she gets to University. The worst of it is she thinks she has done ok. I don't want to rain on her parade so I am keeping schtum.

10 day old salmon anyone?

FantasyAndHope · 11/09/2018 12:30

knitting
That sounds awful that they can’t support your kids. Dds fathers parents are similar Hmm it’s uncalled for.
All our children are on a role... possibly something in the water
Dd has applied for railcard
Bank opened
Set up direct debits&changed SF to her new bank
Referral for rheumatology has been sent GP sent a text

In regards to GP, our gp has told dd it is best to stay at her current GP for treatment as she has referrals in the system etc and there’s a possibility of more surgery which is best to be had in York where she can come home given her reaction to anaesthetic.
Would it be worth registering as a temporary patient at a GP near uni?

Petalflowers · 11/09/2018 14:24

Temporary registration means you are registered for between two weeks and three months. However, the new surgerynwon’t Copies of dcs medical information sent through. That only happens if she becomes permanent. Therefore, if she intends to register as a temporary patient, it may be useful,to get a summary of her medical conditions and medication to hand in to the new gp.

TheThirdOfHerName · 11/09/2018 15:26

For the budgeting app he is using Yolt. Money Dashboard looked very similar. He only just started using it today.

DS1 only applied for the minimum maintenance loan, because we've offered to pay for his accommodation. The fees for his halls are just under £4000 for the year, which seems like a lot, but having read a thread on facebook about accommodation costs, I'm now realising that many halls cost much more!

flatmouse · 11/09/2018 15:58

Thanks third will nudge DS to take a look. His halls are £5.5k for year. He too has min maintenance loan, but I expect him to contribute some of that towards accommodation. Not figured out budget yet. Not long left to do it!
In other news his A2 canvas photo collage (wowcher) is fab!

Nettleskeins · 11/09/2018 16:58

Ds's halls are 6,500 and that is for 42 weeks. Incredibly expensive but most of the [nicer] accommodation at that uni is unless you are training to be a nurse. It would be cheaper to commute. South East prices. However we will save money on the transport back and forth from home. For ds this year is an experiment. I'm not entirely convinced he is either doing the right course or at the right university, so I don't want problems with his accommodation to be the issue. Maybe that is a bit pfb of me.

today has been a bit better, he went to the Meningitis C vaccination appt I had organised for him and thanked me for organising something else. He also told me the details of his timetable, course and lectures...that is all I need to know, that he has actually looked them up...now I am not going to enquire any further.

Just had a interesting conversation with someone who said she bought her son cheap pots and pans, and now that he was moving into student house in Year 2 (warwick) she had had to replace them all as they were not fit for purpose any more. I think it depends whether it is long term investment all this household stuff or whether they are going to come back home in three years for good.

raspberryrippleicecream · 11/09/2018 17:08

I bought DS1 cheap pans from Morrisons and they are all fine going into his third year. My own pans have definitely been a long term investment, they were a wedding present 22 years ago and are absolutely fine.

We are replacing his very cheap cutlery this year, splitting a nicer set with DD!

i've had a couple of very brief messages from DD, flatmates good, made friends, contacted people on her course, been out. So far so good!

Knittinganewme · 11/09/2018 17:35

We bought a set of copper bottomed pans nearly thirty years ago. One of them lost the handle a few years ago but the rest are still going strong. DS has no pans as they had someone else's name against them on the list.

We've also had a mad catch up as DS got to grips with things I've been reminding him to do since June.

Knittinganewme · 11/09/2018 17:43

Halls are a touch over £6k, ensuite with insurance and wifi included They are a minute's walk from the building he'll be studying in and that makes me feel slightly better about the cost.

TheThirdOfHerName · 11/09/2018 17:45

They are a minute's walk from the building he'll be studying in
That's definitely a positive. DS1's bus pass will be over £350 for the year.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/09/2018 18:15

Which university is your DD at raspberry?

littledrummergirl · 11/09/2018 18:28

Please, no more accommodation amounts. Ds1 is paying around £10250!Shock
They had better be awesome.

We finally have our hall carpet down, there was so much left over that dh and Ds1 have put some in the snug. An unexpected skill he may never use.
I bought paracetamol and ibuprofen to add to his pile today- they might be the most important thing on freshers week. Grin
Glad everything is going OK NoHaudin

Bakeandyarn · 11/09/2018 18:41

It’s reassuring to hear that things are going well for DCs who have already made the move. Hope you mumsnetters are all doing ok too!
