BTech/Alevel/extra year. All advice welcome

Sorry this may be long and convoluted!
DS has just finished his first year of an extended sport BTech working at DMM.
So my first question is: what does this mean? Is it a prediction? Does it reflect individual modules? Can it be improved significantly in the next year?

He is attending a football academy - is sort of sub-elite standard, lots of trials but not picked up by a big club - and is thinking of staying on for an extra year to take an A-level or two. He originally wanted to do A-levels but his GSCEs were not as expected (first broken heart) and decide he was fit for nothing and went where he felt wanted.

So second question: would he be better just concentrating on getting his BTech up or would an A-Level help uni applications?
He is considering a sports psychology degree and thinks a psychology A-level will help.

I’m not sure it will and if he wants to do extra he should consider English or History (his favourite and best grades in GCSEs, 7 and B)

So what do you all reckon - stick or twist? And in which direction?

My understanding is that the Extended Diploma BTEC is a 2 year course, so it seems odd that he's been given a 3 grade result this year. How many modules has he done?

DD is doing a different Extended Diploma BTEC and has done nine modules, with nine to do next year. Her college were supposed to set it up so that they did the 90 credit diploma in the first year, which is equivalent to 1 1/2 A levels, and was then followed in the second by the Extended which brought it up to the equivalent of three. But due to lecturer illness (and the alleged loss of the assignments she was supposed to be marking) she's only been given the 60 credit diploma this year (equivalent to one A level) and been told they'll sort out the situation in time for the end of the course...

With regard to Uni, I understand they often only take the top three results anyway, you can't just keep adding them up. Check the entry criteria for any courses he wants to go on, they may well accept a n Extended Diploma anyway.

An A Level will not harm his application to uni but it would need to be taken alongside the BTEC.

Some students go from A Level to BTEC after the first year, not usually the other way round.

DMM is a good grade, has he taken 9 units? As Bowler said he may be able to 'cash in' for a Certificate/Diploma depending on the units studied.

He can up his game with BTEC and make the final BTEC grade higher.

I think you and him should have a look at some university courses and see what they want and then work towards that.

My instinct is to say stick with BTEC, he is doing well with it, changing to A Levels might lower his final grades.

A quick look at Brunel shows DDD at BTEC extended diploma or one of the 'partial' BTEC (cert and diploma) with A Level(s) grade B.

If he didn't do too well at GCSE is he realistically going to get a B at A Level? Would studying an A Level stop him achieving DDD?

Thank you for your responses.
After putting your comments to DS, we did some googling over the weekend and DS has decided to concentrate on the BTec and is confident he can add at least another D.

Most of the courses he’s interested in specify DMM apart from the sports science equivalent of Oxbridge - Loughborough and John Moores. I think he had decided no one would take him seriously without an A level - he’d obviously internalised the academic good, vocation bad rhetoric

So Thank you all for your thoughts and time Flowers
