Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

Good Luck for the Maths exams today Kitten's DD and Doistay's DS 🍀🍀🍀

Downey your DS's school sounds a lot of fun - I don't blame him for not wanting to go in on the bus though! Grin

UrsulaPandress · 16/05/2018 08:16

Cooked breakfast! What is she having? I'd better start planning.

Hope today's exams go well.

It's my birthday today and we are off to Ladybower Reservoir to watch the 75th anniversary Dambusters flypast. I know how to enjoy myself.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 10:25

lovely bacon and eggs Grin

Happy Birthday Ursula, that actually sounds really cool! I'm quite jealous.

Anxiety has fueled me so far. I've managed to change the bedding, clean dds room, clean the bathroom, vacuum everywhere, been for a four mile walk (picking up treats for dd) and the dishes are done. Go me! I'm bloody knackered now already though. Quick coffee and I'll start work.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 10:28

It must be really difficult Lonicera for your dd to balance her health and her study. It must be a case of just muddling through as best she can. I hope she can keep going, an A in a mock is really good.

Good luck to your ds doistay.

Nettleskeins · 16/05/2018 10:40

wow, Kitten so far I have only managed to drive two to school (ds had early morning lesson and dd had an exam so I relented on the lift giving) bellow up the stairs at ds2 (who has a free day today) put the rubbish out and stare hopelessly at the mess. I need to go on a walk.

(could take some blankets to be drycleaned I suppose) I'm going to be ejected from this room shortly I know, when ds2 comes down and starts "revising" - he hates company when working. Still, there is plenty to do elsewhere. All the cake is eaten already and ten apples!!! two carrot cakes down...I need to make more cake this afternoon.

UrsulaPandress · 16/05/2018 10:40

Fly past cancelled due to high winds.

Nettleskeins · 16/05/2018 10:42

Ursula love the Dambusters outing, I looked up that reservoir, very majestic - and the flooded church spire of old . My distraction this week is looking forward to seeing Chesil Beach this Friday/Saturday, the film, one of my favourite books.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 11:28

thats a shame Ursula.

First paper went 'ok'. Phew!

LoniceraJaponica · 16/05/2018 12:04

"Fly past cancelled due to high winds."

They are substituting a Typhoon for the Lancaster. There is a copy of the letter on our local FB page.

Nettleskeins · 16/05/2018 12:24

x post Ursula,

I've been for a long walk/drycleaning and picked up two lovely framed pictures for £20 from local secondhand furniture shop, feel quite pleased starts furnishing ds's student flat

there is so much housework to do suddenly, no-one seems to be doing the usual chores and the stakes for keeping the children fed and calm seem higher. I'm hoping once ds2 gets a bit more used to the exams things will settle down. He keeps attacking Ds1 verbally which doesn't help. Every time ds1 mentions the word unconditional, ds2 who is worried about Sixth Form entrance qualifications, flies into a rage and denounces him....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 13:03

That sounds a bit volatile Nettle!

Well done on the efforts.

LoniceraJaponica · 16/05/2018 13:10

DD got her geography NEA result back today, and I am in happy shock. She got the highest in her year with 52/60. The average mark was 25-30/60.

Thank you for your supportive comments @Lucycat about the new geography syllabus. What grade would this score give?

And thank you for your kind words Kitten. We have recived the paperwork from school today confirming the extra time allowed in exams.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 13:16

That's brilliant Lonicera Grin well done to your dd!

UrsulaPandress · 16/05/2018 13:42

They 'chucked two typhoons' up apparently but the place was heaving by the time we got there and the disabled car park was full.

We have a fab fly past during our bizarre Yanks weekend so fingers crossed for fair weather then.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 14:18

That sounds fun!
Typhoons aren't really a replacement for a Lancaster.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 14:19

Can you tell I'm struggling to focus on work? I've loads to do, some with a critical deadline but posting on mn suddenly seems far more important. I have a lot of empathy with students on the art of procrastination during stress.

raspberryrippleicecream · 16/05/2018 16:40

Congratulations to your DD Lonica

raspberryrippleicecream · 16/05/2018 16:41

Lonicera, sorry!

FantasyAndHope · 16/05/2018 17:50

Hope all the exams went ok! It really is nearly over isn’t it Shock
Happy birthday ursula
Congrats to your dd loni! That’s superb!

Dd is feeling more confident with her revision she seems less stressed about it all

doistayordoigo · 16/05/2018 18:01

Today's exam went 'alright' Hmm Apparently one question was a four parter, and needed the answer in part two for parts three and four to be doable, unfortunately he didn't get the answer in part 2, so a total of 10 marks lost in parts 3 & 4 alone. This sounds like a lot to me, but this paper is the one he got 8/75 for in the mock, and will only contribute to the further maths A level, so I am trying to reassure myself that a good grade in the further maths would only be a bonus anyway...the units he needs to concentrate on are those that are either compulsory or potentially contribute to the normal maths A level.

Lucycat · 16/05/2018 19:10

Lonicera that's fantastic news on your DD's NEA- she'd clearly worked very hard to get such a fab grade. That's got to be easily an A grade and what's more as it's worth 20% of her A level she's bagged herself a great head start for her exams. Pass on my congratulations please.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 16/05/2018 19:24

lonicera that is an excellent grade well done to your dd.
She is doing so well to be carrying on in spite of the CFS. I have it myself and can't imagine trying to do A levels when it was more severe.

LoniceraJaponica · 16/05/2018 19:33

Thank you everyone for your support and kind words. DD hasn't had an easy ride, and this is the morale boost that she needed.

Re the Lancaster. On a friend's FB update he says that the Typhoon was so late that many people had gone when it arrived. Sorry you missed it Ursula. People had been advised to get there early as there were clearly going to be problems with parking.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 19:41

Try not to worry about it Doistay, grade boundaries tend to be lower in these papers. The mechanics ones can be tough.

UrsulaPandress · 16/05/2018 21:48

Total melt down again tonight re Palace outfit. More hours wasted. Bastard horse with wounded leg refusing to be caught. More hours wasted.
