Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

Not a lot of revision here, dh took down the back hedge that our neighbours have killed and replaced it with fencing. We had had to put temporary fencing in front of it to stop the dog escaping and the neighbours had started to treat it as their boundary rather than ours.

We didn't really have an option if we wanted to preserve our boundary so ds1 has spent the last two days on hard labour. Grin
He's much more relaxed now though. His exams start at the beginning of June.

He made an appointment with the bank today to open a student bank account to have his loan paid into. They have said he needs to have his place confirmed (results day) before they can do this, is this likely to hold up his receiving the money as it seems crazy for it to be done for thousands of students on such a tight timescale?

raspberryrippleicecream · 16/05/2018 23:57

I'm sorry Ursula
Doesn't sound like you've had the best birthday altogether!

Littledrummergirl DS1 converted his existing HSBC account to a student account after results day, partly because it was difficult to get an appointment with Santander and partly cos he wanted the Amazon vouchers and Prime subscription. He switched to Santander last year and got his Railcard.

Assuming he has a bank account of some sort already, switching accounts is really quick.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/05/2018 03:01

16 exams, 6 pieces of coursework, one 4000 word essay, one 1500 word essay, one theory of knowledge presentation and at least 100 hours of sport and community service - all finished!
Ds has finished the IB! He's out with his friends and I shall be celebrating with a large gin - but not quite yet as only 10 am here.
Good luck to all your children with their exams and fingers crossed for the results they need in August!

Downeyhouse · 17/05/2018 05:57

What a relief that must be Shanghai.

Are IB results in July?

DS is doing the European Bac and gets his results 5 days after his last exam ie in early July.

We get them by email on 5th, graduation ceremony on the 6th and a prom with parents on 7th!

I remember that long awful wait for a level results :(

ShanghaiDiva · 17/05/2018 06:01

Yes, results first week of July.

Icouldbeknitting · 17/05/2018 06:42

I have "reminded" DS that he needs to look at student bank accounts and the freebies that come with. No doubt I'll be "reminding" him again before September.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/05/2018 06:56

Thank you for the reminder about student bank accunts. DD already has a bank account, but we will look to see which one offers the best set of freebies.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2018 07:17

wow Shanghai! That's quite a marker. Well done to your ds for completing his school education!

dd tried to create a Santander account, but she couldn't get an appointment, they told her to do it online, but inexplicably it hung and customer services were crap. So she abandoned the attempt.

UrsulaPandress · 17/05/2018 07:54

The IB sounds great. So much more rounded than A levels.

HesMyLobster · 17/05/2018 08:11

Wow Shanghai! Congratulations to your ds!
And to you.
That must be a pretty wonderful feeling for the 2 of you right now!

DD has her second Latin exam today. The first one on Monday went surprisingly well so fingers crossed!

Ursula sorry your birthday seems to have all gone wrong. I think you should plan something lovely to do at the weekend to celebrate (that doesn't involve shopping or ponies!) ThanksCake

FantasyAndHope · 17/05/2018 08:43

drummer
Most banks say after exams. My bank
(Santander) day results day or after
That must be a relief shanghai dd wanted to do the IB we have in the uk

Dd is shattered and appears to be getting worse rather than better, just a head ups last years exam papers for OCR are mostly on the website now

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2018 08:51

I agree Lobster, Ursula you need birthday number 2 asap.

TeresasGreen · 17/05/2018 09:12

Ursula I suggest we have a virtual party here for you with Gin and Cake

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2018 11:25

Can we start on the Gin now?

HesMyLobster · 17/05/2018 13:11

Yes please to Ginand Cake
This week must be nearly finished, surely?!

What with DD and her Latin, driving tests and birthdays(DD 18 last fri, DH was 40 on Monday!) Not to mention DD2 and her 6 GCSE exams this week, I feel completely shattered!

My head is a huge jumble of Latin conjugations, GCSE chemistry and French vocab after hours of testing them both last night.

HesMyLobster · 17/05/2018 13:12

And don't even get me started on work - I've spent the morning baking with 60 5/6 year olds! No wonder my head hurts!!

starfleet · 17/05/2018 14:39

Lobster - well done to your DD on passing her driving test
Lonicera - and well done to your DD on her Geography result
Shanghai - I so wish i was in your position right now....!
Ursula - Happy (belated) Birthday
Fantasy - hope your DD is feeling OK today
This thread moves so fast so I've probably missed so many congrats/well done's off for other DC's.

Student bank accounts...DS went to open one at his bank but was told that he will have to do it after results day once he has confirmation of which uni he will be going to.

UrsulaPandress · 17/05/2018 16:26

Is a student bank account different to an ordinary account?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2018 16:44

They get free stuff and I think an agreed free overdraft.

starfleet · 17/05/2018 18:14

DS wants to stay with the same bank he is with already - the student account offers a free overdraft, cash back rewards, discounts etc etc. It's so different to when I was a student many moons ago - had to go and see the student finance manager at the branch who'd virtually make you beg him to increase your overdraft. He was not a nice man!

It's a bit daft that he can't open it until August though! I just imagining the student finance people being inundated with bank details after results day!

Nettleskeins · 17/05/2018 18:25

I'm confused about the bank accounts too. Ds has applied for student finance and they said they needed a bank account for him to pay it into, so how does that work, not having one??? Does it delay the application?

Ds in a very good mood today, possibly because he likes hearing about his siblings' horrendous Gsce Chemistry papers. I've walked miles today and met up with some acquaintances from before kids.

Keep hearing of students who enjoying ds's uni, it is a relief.

UrsulaPandress · 17/05/2018 18:42

I'll have to check with DD's bank. She's had an account with them for years.

Horse is on box rest. Vet could get her fingers up his leg through the wound. Boak.

So much for enjoying a rest over the summer.

TheSecondOfHerName · 17/05/2018 18:44

DS1 is feeling a little better this week and has made it into school every day this week. He actually made a follow-up appointment for half term without any prompting or reminding from me, which makes me feel hopeful about him taking more responsibility for his health when he leaves home.

UrsulaPandress · 17/05/2018 18:53

A dress and blazer have been delivered which DD has deemed Palace appropriate.

Praise the Lord.

raspberryrippleicecream · 17/05/2018 19:13

Good news about the dress Ursula. Not so good about the horse, hope he recovers soon.

Second that sounds encouraging.

I think the student money can be paid into any kind of bank account, DD has put her existing account down for now. Student accounts are after your custom and offer incentives. Santander's four year railcard is pretty good! Martin Lewis says you should look at the offered overdraft first if is something you think you/they will need.
