Y13 Summer term: Finishing Lessons, Starting Exams and leaving Sixth Form

catslife · 22/04/2018 15:07

So our dcs are now on the last term of sixth form, finishing off lessons and starting their exams.
How did that happen - doesn't seem that long ago since they started Y12.
This is the thread where we support each other as our dcs revise and start their exams, finish off coursework, leave sixth form and make plans for what to do with the rest of their lives. This may involve going to uni or other alternatives.
Every Y13 parent is welcome to join in whether new to these threads or if you have been with us for a while - the more the merrier.

I'm hoping that dds existing dresses will do! We've not thought about prom.

Poor dd forgot how to read when revising this afternoon. Literally Confused I found her very upset. All maths papers confiscated and only gaming allowed for the rest of the day. Good job I work from home.

HesMyLobster · 15/05/2018 17:03

DD has passed her driving test today!
3rd time lucky!
I almost talked her into cancelling and waiting until after exams when she was having a moment of not enough hours in the day a couple of weeks ago. I'm so glad she didn't.
Another thing ticked off the list Grin

raspberryrippleicecream · 15/05/2018 17:07

Excellent news Lobster!

raspberryrippleicecream · 15/05/2018 17:08

Kitten your poor DD. Hope she is rested and sorted.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 15/05/2018 17:09

lobster congratulations to your dd.
kitten that is quite frightening. Hopefully the gaming will help and good luck for tomorrow.

Dd's school doesn't do a prom. Lots of geeky students who would be keen I think. They have a barbecue next Friday which is last full day as study leave starts after half term.
I am glad I don't have to stress about a dress- getting something for her cousin's wedding in July is bad enough.

chocolateworshipper · 15/05/2018 18:03

Welcome downey

Congratulations lobster's DD

Kitten - can I get off the desk now? And next time, don't drop me so hard - I have a headache.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/05/2018 18:09

Grin chocolate!
She seems happier now, but flaming hell, stress is weird isn't it. I think she might have been overdoing things.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/05/2018 18:10

Lobster, that's brilliant news :)

LoniceraJaponica · 15/05/2018 20:03

Well done to your DD Lobster.

adrinkofwater · 15/05/2018 20:06

Well done to your DD Lobster. My DD took her test yesterday and failed! First time though! Really added to the stress of the day though with it being DS's first day of GCSEs!

marmiteloversunite · 15/05/2018 20:07

Great news lobster! Now you can really start worrying as they go out and about alone! Grin

Lucycat · 15/05/2018 20:32

Fab news for lobster's dd.
My dd has ordered a few dresses from boohoo as they have lots to suit her. Free returns is great too.
Still a whole week and a half at college to go here before study leave!

Nettleskeins · 15/05/2018 21:05

dd (16) bought a lovely dress from Topshop online, strapless bodice, long skirt with lace insert at hem in a pale khaki colour. And a not so lovely "Greek Chorus" dress which is a pale donkey colour (looked pale pink on website) however even that looks nice enough, just a bit floppy. She needs high heels for both, but I disapprove of high heels,:she said normally people wear them for the photos then change to flipflops, [how ridiculous, what is wrong with dancing slippers!!! ] Chi Chi also had some very naice dresses online, but I've yet to persuade her of their merit.

Lobster what perseverance, that is amazing. Smile

Adrink it tookme quite a few goes,.

Ds1's first exam is Thursday 7th June. I've realised that he only has one paper for one A level, all efforts have to go into that one paper eek! Three papers for English Lit though.

Ds has now applied for student finance as his unconditional has been confirmed (2 weeks after we pressed the button). He starts on 17th September if all goes well-ish.

I've spent today cooking carrot cake
large fruit salad
bubble and squeak
pasta with anchovy and broccoli
hanging out washing
giving up on the piles of paper.
struggling with the compost heap
watering plants
falling asleep and listening to tales of first gcse (biology x 2)
testing dd on RE

still cannot find the scissors

marmiteloversunite · 15/05/2018 21:13

Wow busy day Nettles!! I am grateful that DD2 isn't doing her GCSE's until next year. I don't know how you guys are coping with multiple revision and exam stress going on.

Icouldbeknitting · 15/05/2018 22:19

Nettles the way to think about the single paper exam is that he already has most of the marks in the bag already, the effort has already gone on the two assessed elements.

Congratulations Lobster, I'll be glad when mine has passed so I can reclaim the £100/month I'm spending on lessons (and spend it on insurance instead)

UrsulaPandress · 15/05/2018 22:27

Yay for the driving test pass. It changes everything.

FantasyAndHope · 15/05/2018 22:34

Congrats lobster
Kitten I’ve had to do the same before but sometimes it is truly for the best!
I don’t envy you nettles seems like a hetic day!

HesMyLobster · 15/05/2018 23:01

Thankyou all, she's very excited to drive to school in the morning! (DD2 is even more excited to be getting a lift in!)

Goodness Kitten, I missed your post earlier, your poor DD, that is worrying and definitely sounds like she's been overdoing it.
Hope she's managed to give her brain a bit of a break and is feeling better.

Ursula what nightmare of a day!
My DD has a very strict No frills. No ruffles. No flowers. No lace Policy, so prom dressing was not easy!
She found this (super cheap!) one from ASOS which she's ordered but not tried on yet:

Congrats to Your daughter Lobster.

Gender swap day for the leavers today - getting ready to drive my son to school in a mini dress. Is too shy to catch the school bus as usual as there is only one other leaver on our route and she gets on at the end of the line.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 06:46

First cooked breakfast of the exam season done

If dd thinks she's getting cooked breakfasts delivered to university, she has another thing coming Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 06:52

It was a bit scary Lobster. Poor love, on closer, gentle questioning I think it was that the sentences didn't make sense, rather than a total failure to be able to read. I still have nightmares about that happening in university exams, reading and rereading and only seeing gibberish.
She seems fine this morning, so I'm hoping it was just pre exam jitters.

I'll have to be stricter about removing her from work. She doesn't really need to revise nearly so much, other than practising step papers, it's just a case of doing it because it's what you are supposed to do.

derekthe1adyhamster · 16/05/2018 07:00

First exam here today. Maths C1. DS needs AAB, B is predicted in maths but he is determined to get AAA in order to get into the 4 year course with a year abroad. Hence some very stressy phone calls about he needs an average of 80% in all maths papers. He was 'only' averaging 85% in C1 the easiest paper.
He's up to about 90% now that he's checking his work more carefully. He's not good at working slowly and steadily......

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 07:02

good luck to your ds Derek.

LoniceraJaponica · 16/05/2018 07:06

And I could do with DD doing a bit more revision Kitten. Unfortunately she is just too tired most of the time. She got her final chemistry mock grade and scraped into an A. Apparently it was last years A level paper and she said it was very difficult. She is in a very bright class though and got the lowest marks. I hope she can find the motivation to carry on and not give up.

doistayordoigo · 16/05/2018 07:32

First exam for DS today as well, Maths M3. He says he has done revision since his disastrous mock results, when I asked if he was ready he just said "hopefully". After this one he's then got nearly three weeks until the rest of his exams, which seems really strange.
