So my son went to enrol at college yesterday for his A levels in English lang, Sociology and Law as he wants to study Law. He got a c in Sociology, and a 6 in English lang but A for all his science subjects. They have suggested he does Science now as he has an affinity for it but finds it boring.......what to do?????

I've tried with the "science is fantastic!", he's not buying it........

As a solicitor I would not recommend Law A level.

Explain to him that if he wants to study law in order to become a solicitor eventually he will need AAA/AAB and a 2.1 at a decent uni to secure a training contract so it is more important to get good grades so to do the subjects he thinks he will perform best in. Now that may be the ones he has chosen because he has time and energy to put into them when they become his only subjects.

Out of his initial choices is only English a facilitating subject?

English is yes but psychology counts as a science at some universities. Mine got into a RG uni with one facilitating subject at a level and two at as level.

A level law always seems to be controversial on here.This is a bit dated but seems to give an alternative view. English Lit rather than language however would keep more options open to your ds if he wants a facilitating subject in the mix. Look at where he wants to be in 5/6 years time and work backwards

Gosh it's bloody confusing and I'm not 16!! I think they are going to see how he goes and change course if necessary.

I did sciences mostly at school and now I am doing law at uni. It actually really helped. A lot of the students with humanities backgrounds have a really difficult time breaking down and applying the law. What you really need are strong language skills and strong analytical skills. The former is best taught through literature. The later can be acquired through research intensive humanities subject or, more commonly at school level, through sciences.
