Just noticed we were running out of thread!

DD has mostly a good set of results, except her A is in the subject she wanted to drop, and she has D in a subject she wanted to keep. So she is very fed up at the moment, but she'll be ok.

Glad to hear some nice results coming in.

Commiserations to those whose results haven't gone as they hoped.

UrsulaPandress · 17/08/2017 12:48

She came home in tears, but mainly because she found out yesterday evening that a mother of a friend of hers in Y11 committed suicide at the weekend. The girl lost her father when DD was in Reception and she was in nursery. We have gone through school with the family - DH talked to her more than me - (we called her the Merry Widow as DH could never remember her name). Her eldest has just graduated with a first from University and her youngest gets her GCSE results next week.

I know I shouldn't say this, but how could she do that to those poor girls. She must have been in so much pain.

Sad Sad Sad

But congratulations to those who got the results they wanted/deserved.

inchyrablue · 17/08/2017 13:18

Goodness Ursula I'm so very sad to hear that. Completely dreadful for the daughters, but so hard for your DD too. That would be enough to tip anyone in to tears.

catslife · 17/08/2017 13:33

What sad news "ursula*.
dd is back with AS results in line with predictions, one grade B and one D. I understand this is enough to continue with both subjects in Y13.

starfleet · 17/08/2017 13:50

How awful Ursula - what a sad situation.

DS came out with a B and C. He has realised that more effort = better results so has professed his intentions of working harder and being more organised when he goes back. He's not had a bad week as he passed his theory test on Tuesday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2017 14:16

Ursula that's so sad. How truly awful.

Icouldbeknitting · 17/08/2017 14:16

What terrible news Ursula.

I will join you with a surprise!!! C, DS is gutted because he came out of the exams feeling really good about them, the questions were a gift. He was confident that he had aced it and so he has failed to meet his expectations by a long way. I will pay to have the script back so he can see where it was he went wrong. My suspicion (based on GCSE writing) is that he's happily spent pages demonstrated his knowledge but not actually answering the question.

DH has been briefed on what not to say as he comes in the door.

chocolateworshipper · 17/08/2017 14:18

ursula how utterly, utterly awful

My own mother tried to commit suicide when I was a child (but survived). She told me many years later than when you are in that state, you genuinely believe that you are doing the right thing for everyone. Doesn't make it any easier for those poor girls. My heart goes out to them.

PandaG · 17/08/2017 14:34

Oh Ursula, how awful. Xx

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2017 15:54

your poor ds knitting. If it's Edexcel college can download his paper this year (for the first time) so you can see what happened. Good idea to remark if it looks like it might be dodgy.

MsAwesomeDragon · 17/08/2017 16:18

That's awful Ursula. Those poor kids.

I've now had the email from my hod about the results for my y12 class, and while there are a couple of surprises most of them were in line with expectations, which is good. I suspect 3 will drop maths and the rest will continue, reading any modules they've not done as well on.

Dd passed her theory test last week, and her instructor seems to think she's nearly ready for the practical.

raspberryrippleicecream · 17/08/2017 16:36

Oh Ursula how awful.

Icouldbe what a shame for him. It's horrible that way round.

Icouldbeknitting · 17/08/2017 17:00

He'll get over it. I'll get a copy of the paper back for him to look through (thanks Kitten but it's not that board) and then he will get the chance to see what it was he did wrong. If by some chance there's a marking error (as it was a C on both papers so I suspect exam technique) then I'll go for a remark. I think it will come down to having all the knowledge but not answering the question.

I am still smarting over my O level maths paper where I got a B. If I had known that you could get the paper back I would have given my birthday money to see where I dropped the marks on that one. I really do understand that it's the not knowing that hurts.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2017 17:23

Some sad news on here. It makes the results seem so unimportant in the grand scheme of things

Well done to everyone's DC. Full marks in two papers Panda. Wow!
DD's school won't email results or allow online access to them. They have to be collected in person or posted.

They took AS in all subjects at DD's school and she got 2As and 2Bs. The irony is that she has dropped one of the A grade subjects as she hates it.

UrsulaPandress · 17/08/2017 18:47

Sorry if I rained on anyone's parade. I was asked not to discuss it in real life but should in hindsight have kept schtum on here as well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/08/2017 18:57

It was clearly a massive shock Ursula, I'm not surprised you wanted to talk about it. mn could maybe pull your post if you think that would be better.

OP posts:
Icouldbeknitting · 17/08/2017 19:02

Ursula you could go back and ask to have your post deleted because no-one quoted from it. It did put some perspective on today's issues though.

Icouldbeknitting · 17/08/2017 19:02

That shows you how long it takes me to type anything.

PandaG · 17/08/2017 19:06

Thanks Lonicera . His mate who is a complete maths whizz did 8 maths modules this year instead of the 6 needed for maths and further maths AS, teaching himself the extra modules - he got full marks in 7/8 maths papers, and As in his other AS!! (Non selective state school). DS has been teaching himself some of next year's modules this summer, he will have entrance exam in November so wants to have covered as much as possible by then.

Hoping everyone has been able to process results, and that where things didn't quite go as hoped they can find out what to do differently next year.

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/08/2017 19:32

Dd1 happy. Didn't feel it was her best work but v happy with results and should get what she needs for ucas predictions

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/08/2017 19:33

How awful Ursula and Cats.
Very sad news.

UrsulaPandress · 17/08/2017 19:51

Thanks all. I'll leave it to stand if that's ok. Otherwise all the references in other posts might be misinterpreted.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/08/2017 20:18

How do they work out A level predictions? DD needs As in the 2 subjects she got Bs in.

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/08/2017 20:33

This thread is still not on my tio

Littledrummergirl · 17/08/2017 20:47

Ds1 got a B. I haven't seen his results email but he seems happy enough. Can I ask a few questions here though?
Ds1 seems to think he can retake the module that pulled his grade down (11ums marks of an a) if he continues with the subject. Is he right?
What will be better, continuing with the subject, persuading his school to predict the a he needs for ucas by working hard or dropping the subject and going for his other option in which he is a solid A?

I have never been through this and haven't got a clue. He is really calm and this is focusing his mind on future plans, I was expecting stress and worry from him so I am very pleasantly impressed. I don't want to give bad advice though.

Ursula that's incredibly sad. Flowers
