Hello everyone, I'm new to mumsnet but I'm told this is the place to get real advice!

My son has just completed his degree, and his graduation was a proud moment for me! After all the hard work he put in I'm hoping he finds a job on a graduate training programme. He loves computers so is wanting to get a job with an IT company, I want to help him find something of steer him in the right direction, does anyone know of where I can start looking or of any companies offering such an opportunity?

If he has taken a degree course then he will have had plenty of opportunity to attend careers fairs and make appropriate contacts re graduate schemes. Did he do any placements as part of his course or in holidays ? He could still use the careers officer for advice. However this is really something which he needs to do for himself. Alternatively he could get practical experience via temp agencies through which he may eventually get contracts or a permanent role.

If he's on twitter he could start by following these accounts:
GraduatorUK, GraduatejobsUK, Prospects, Milkround

Lots of graduate training programmes start in September, and have already recruited, but others may have different points of recruitment throughout the year. His friends must have talked about what they were doing to get jobs. What did they do? At the very least he should try and get a job while he works on his CV. He needs to know what employers want and how he matches up to expectations - type of degree, level of degree, work experience, volunteering, personality and interview skills for a start. Does he know anyone working in IT who might allow him to work shadow them? I also think he should contact his university careers service.

He should google "graduate jobs in NATS". Depending on what he fancies there are opportunities in software engineering, systems engineering and project management. He might also fancy trying out for a ridiculously overpaid job as an air traffic controller.

Hi thank you all for your suggestions! I will talk to him about these options, keep you posted on how he gets on... fingers crossed its not too late for him to join a graduate programme starting later than September

He'll have missed the boat for this month's graduate schemes, they have a long recruitment process usually with a couple of interviews/ assessment days. Why was he not doing this during his final year? Was he going to the recruitment fayres and stuff during his degree?

He wanted to focus on his exams and I bet he didn't think it would be this hard to find something. Anyway he has found a Company which is still recruiting and he seems to be really excited about what they offer and how they work! I'm hope he does well in the interview, its great to see him excited about his career.
