DD blew her ASs. What now?

She got AAB and an unclassified (I think because she won't talk about it) for further maths, because she got unclassified on one paper.

She wants to do computer science at a Russell Group uni, and I'm worried that the failed further maths will make this impossible. Not sure what the right course is. She got A for maths.

Just redo it! If the school can't help, you can study Further maths modules pretty easily online.

Presumably from what you say she got two of the modules needed and just needs to top up to a full AS with another one - so if she takes four FM modules next year, job done.

(By the way, it's hard;y blowing her (plural) ASs to have one dodgy module amongst several really good results...)

We all tend to catastrophise in this family too, though, so I can sympathise.

Have you checked that she definitely needs further maths? A friend's daughter is doing a maths degree without it which I didn't think was possible.

She definitely wants to drop further maths, as the alternative is to drop geography which she got her best ums in, and is the most likely one she'll get an A* in.

I'm not sure she needs to declare it. As she effectively hasn't got the AS, she can't cash it in this year as a completed qualification. Not all schools cash in the ASs in yr 12 anyway.

Yes just don't mention it. Ds got the same ASs. He didn't declare the U. He is at an RG uni. AAB is not blowing anything. Except your own trumpet.

Don't take our random word for it though! If the school does cash in the result then it will need to be declared (I think).

Bright kids occasionally bomb stuff and universities know this. One failure does not wreck an application if the other grades are good. We are all human, after all. Universities look at the bigger picture. However in this case she could resit or just not mention it.

PS DD got 0% in one of her AL papers and still got into Cambridge - interestingly she got 100% on another one. But that is DD all over.

Yes, what I meant was even with a U you can still get into an RG because AAB is fine and not blowing anything.

There are only two CS departments that want further maths, Cambridge and Imperial, and even in those cases there are caveats and exceptions. Everywhere else is fine with maths, and a few will accept computing (the new A Level) instead of maths.

Are you sure her FM is unclassified. Maths modules are quite complex and it's common not to cash any of them in until A2.

If her results in the other Further Maths modules were good, then she should certainly consider resitting the failed module in Y13 (or taking a different one in its place). She needs to talk to the school about options, not bury her head in the sand.
