DD is now starting year 2 of a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business Studies. At the end of the 2 years I understand she will have 3 grades ranging from Pass to Distinction*.

The results could be PPP, MMM, DDD, D D D* - or any combination of these.

After the first year she has completed 9 units and has been awarded a level 3, 90 credit diploma at grades Distinction, Distinction.

What I don't understand is how these awarded grades will affect the final results due next summer.

Are her 2 D grades "safe", ie they will definately stand as 2 firm results next summer with 1 more result to be obtained during this academic year? As such her final results will be D D* + ?

OR

Will these year 1 results be thrown into the "melting pot" of overall results and become absorbed into her final gradings depending upon how well she does in year 2, ie, if she performs badly the D* results could disappear and be levelled out at possible 3 Pass grades?

DD has asked her tutor but wasn't sure of the reply!!!!!

Help please.

This guide with examples seems to suggest they will be 'thrown into the mix'.

I THINK it works the same way as AS - so the 90 credit Dip contributes towards the 180 credit Extended Dip, which means she'd have to serious bomb the second year to just get PPP!

Thank you Odd and Titchy - i've read the link and now think that I need a flippin degree to understand the marking system but at least I get the gist!!!!

Thanks Thanks

My daughter did just the two years and she got DDD* and she worked out that from her 18 units (all worth 10 credits) she needed 15 Distinctions and 3 Merits to get that top grade. She managed it with 16 x D and 2 x M.

She used Geoffrey's blog online BTEC calculator to work it out!

That should say D D D* but I fell foul of formatting!

Kez - that calculator is fantastic - makes it more understandable.

Thank you

Pleased it helped!

Send my good wishes to your daughter for her second year - I did a BTEC National Diploma in Business and Finance in 1983/5!!! It has served me very well indeed :)
