Open University query

I just wondered whether anyone could share their experiences of OU study. I might like to do a Masters over 3 years, and wondered how other people found doing something similar while working and with DC etc (only 0.8FTE and 1 DC in my case). TIA.

I'm doing an honours degree at the moment, I have four DCs under 6yo though I don't work as my DH works irregular hours and is often away.

It can be intense especially during school holidays and when assignments are due. I don't know if the masters course would be the same as the degree one but for a 60 point course at level 2 I need about 20 hours a week to study, more when an assignment is due. I do need to read through the course material and make notes as I go which is what takes so much time.

All the materials you need for the course are provided so there's no need to spend hours on researching other materials for assignments. The online forums are good an the tutors are IME very helpful.

I wouldn't be able to do it if I was working with my DCs. But as you only have one I'd say its possible. There's lots of information on the website which can help you get an idea of how much commitment your course would take in terms of study time. There's also the careers service who are really helpful.

Its tough going and stressful at times but worth it.

There's quite a few OU students on the student parents board so it might be worth reposting there as well.

I taught full-time in an FE College and taught for the Open University as well and I believe that the structure of their courses is well designed to allow people the flexibility to cope with complex lives.
Just one piece of advice. Always contact your tutor if there is an issue as 99% of things can be sorted
