Training

Does anyone else find some of the training a complete waste of time?
I’ve just had to complete an online medication session.
At the start it stated- this training is for those working in care homes not working remotely.
Over an hour of training that was directed at people working in nursing homes, yet it is classed as mandatory training for foster carers.
I think most of this training is a tick box exercise and is completely irrelevant to carers

I think most of the training sessions I’ve been to have been quite a waste of time to be honest. The ones I found best were when experts came in to talk about attachment or ASD or whatever. Those sessions are great. But when social workers run them I usually find them totally pointless.

Totally. I remember one occasion where there were two different training sessions, one morning and one afternoon. The afternoon one, by a different person with a different speciality, contradicted everything in the morning had said to do. Not just a slightly different perspective but completely opposite!

In can honestly say I have never found them helpful, other than the fact that to abide by them keeps social workers happy. Completely about box ticking in my view.

I try not to be too cynical.

I imagine these online courses are actually quite expensive to produce, so they really can’t do multiple courses for every single target audience.

I did a couple of food hygiene courses yesterday (basic and advanced). Although the courses were more targeted at catering, there was plenty of relevant content for your own home.

If I was fostering for my LA I don’t think I’d be too bothered but I’m with an agency which started off as a small concern. We have been taken over numerous times and I am now with a massive business that also has schools, care homes etc. all over the country. The training is a one for all.
We have been with the agency for over 10 years, have had the same child (boy) with us for most of that time, we won’t foster again as he will likely be with us a very long time yet I’ve been told I need to complete a mandatory course on fgm.
