To give up full time job or not

Hi all, i'm in a dilemma. I am a single 40yr old carer to 1 12yr and 1 son 14yr. FC has been with me 1 year, did respite for learning difficulties for 3 years before, I am seriously thinking of giving up full time job and having another FC (registered for 2) Has anyone else done this and is it the best decision you have made.

I do enjoy my job but after 14 years feel I that I need to do something else, I love fostering even after having a knife thrust at me!! (child no longer with me)

I think the problem is that you cannot be guaranteed continuous funding, as you will only get paid when you have a placement. You could take a child on the basis of permanent fostering but there is no guarantee that this will work out.

Just a warning many LAs are "encouraging" permanent foster carers to apply for a Special Guardianship Order (you are only guaranteed funding for 2 years) the PR is passed over to you and the case is closed, so this is much cheaper for th LA who are all severely cash strapped. I would have a talk to your LA about your plan, and see what their reaction is to permanent fostering.

Our la pays you whether you have a placement or not. Obviously not the full allowance but you are guaranteed an income 52 weeks of the year.

Really - have never heard of this. I know some LAs pay "retainer fees" for a few weeks in between placements. Would you mind saying which LA this is?

Thanks for your replies. I was speaking to SW and she mentioned that our LA has more children than carers, this got me thinking about doing something different with my life. I've always worked full time since son was born and have always wants to be there for school hols and home time etc. I have often thought about training to be a LSW, this would be an ideal opportunity to do something.
