I found this programme very interesting, especially the little girl who was an elective mute, as my sister was also, from about the age of 5 - 9 and was just the same, talked at home, but not anywhere else including school. I'm going back to the 50s btw and my sister was chatting away to me in the playground one day and a horrid teacher heard her, dragged her in school and said "so X you can talk, you are just being stubborn. My sister cried and wet herself and I wasn't allowed to comfort her. I think my mom went to the school but in those days there was no understanding of these kinds of conditions. Thank god things changed. My sister grew out of it and had 4 daughters and the youngest had the same condition, but this was in the 70s and my sister had no hesitation in making sure the school understood. She also saw a child psychologist with good effect. She was also tremendously shy, but as she grew up everything changed. She is now inher mid 40s, is lovely and confident and has a very high powered job.

Tourettes is a truly awful thing to have to live with, and shows us just how complicated the brain is, and how little is understood about it. I really wish there was more research into brain disorders, especially as we keep being reminded how many people are going to have alzheimers in the future - oh better not go there.....
