OS postings & mobiles

I'm thinking about going up in the world and getting a new phone on contract - I'm currently on PAYG. Problem is, dh could be posted overseas (Canada) by the end of the year.

Does anybody know if you can continue a mobile contract with a BFPO address and if your 'plan' continues to apply whilst your os? ( I somehow doubt this but thought I'd ask anyway!)

I have emailed the main companies but I've had 4 standard emails back saying 'come into our store and let us set you up' - none have actually answered my question and I very much doubt the spotty teenagers in the phone shop could enlighten me either.

I am not in the forces but did catch the end of Watchdog this week which was about the problems some had when the were overseas. You can probably find it on I player

We are o/s, and the best way seems to be to get a local mobile. I have PAYG for UK, and another phone for we are, as does dh. Your plan will be configured for the UK, with o/s charges, and I wouldn't want a mobile bill for phoning from Canada - it would eat all your LOA and then some!

Lots of UK firms don't have a scooby what the BFPO is anyway, so I wouldn't waste your time in trying to set this up.

top tip - get a canadian mobile when you get here. you really don't want to be paying for international calls on a uk mobile. however, canadian companies usually want you to sign up for a 2 year minimum contract, so do it as soon as you arrive. my uk (payg) mobile sits in a drawer ready to be resurrected in case of return/ needing to find an old phone number... hth

oh, and i don't think anyone calls their uk buddies anyway - it's all skype/ fb if you don't want to use the landline (which isn't that expensive really...)

Good thinking ATOP, forgot about Skype & FB, will try to hang back on getting a new phone then! Thanks for the help.
