well, you're really close to the historic market town of Stamford (where they filmed Middle March) which has a good selection of shops (more boutique type/designer wear shops but also some small (in size) high street shops such as Fat Face, M & S, WHS, Boots etc. It's a great town and always has lots of events on. Some really fab restaurants too. The George Hotel is lovely and has the 'Garden Room' for lovely lunches and informal dinners.
Burleigh House is a beautiful estate for just walking around (free) and they have a cafe in the orangerie and the house is amazing. They hold the annual Burleigh horse trials there every september.

Peterborough isn't far - just along the A1 - and has the famous Queensgate shopping centre, which has a great John Lewis and loads of other high street shops. Peterborough has good retail parks for DIY/cinema/Supermarket etc. P'borough train station is a great way to get to London Kingscross in just 40mins.

You're on the border of 3 counties - northants, cambs and Lincs - Lincoln not too far and lovely for shopping and sightseeing in the old part especially. Cambridge only an hour away too for great shopping/sightseeing.

luciemule - that's really helpful. Thank you. It sounds a lovely part of the country.
