Hi there,
DH has been away over 4 months now and has recently been given his leading hands back after previously being demoted over 2 years ago now.He had been "promised" it since last Jan and the harder he worked, the further the goal posts moved. However, finally at the beg of March this year his captain has written him a report recommending him for promotion.
He still hasn't officially got it however and it looks like it is going to miss this payday as well!!!
It is so frustrating! He was originally doing the job for 3 years but didn't get on with his boss so his rate was taken off him for being incompetent basically.
To complicate matters DH plans to put notice in and has (stupidly in my opinion) made this widely known on his ship. We went to see him on his deployment and when he got back to ship his boss made comments about how happy we looked as a family and how he is not cut out to be a sailor etc despite the fact that he has been in the Navy 12 years next Jan. DH says they are nervous about him leaving and I feel that his promotion is deliberately being stalled so he doesn't put notice in. 4 others have got notice in so it looks bad.
He has been told if he puts notice in he won't get promotion. We really need this money and I don't understand why it is taking so long. We plan for DH to put notice in as soon as leading hands rate has been authorised and sorted. We had planned this to be last deployment but dh tells me tonight they will be away all of Oct so clearly we need to get on with it!
DH says it has to be sent back to Ports to be approved then it will be put on JPA but it is taking forever. DH says he has talked to boss but to me seems to be getting nowhere. I am considering contacting JPA/NPFS as I feel enough is enough. Is this unreasonable??

Your post is a bit confusing - did he have his confirmed LH before, or was he local acting? If he was LA then, but didn't meet performance expectations, he would need a few more good reports before getting another shot at LH as they would want to see sustained performance before confirming him as a killick. You only get the pay once you are confirmed AFAIK.

NPFS are there for welfare issues and I don't think they would get involved in pay and promotional disputes.

Thanks for replying sidge. He was a confirmed LH before but as I say, had it taken off him for poor performance.
It just seems like there is noone to go to/get advice?

He could ask to see his Divisional Officer. His DO should know when he is likely to get rated up properly, and can liaise with the necessary bods.

Agree with Sidge, speak to DO.

NPFS won't help and JPA won't discuss anything with you.

Do you mind me asking what branch your DH is? Some branches are panicing about notices being put in, but not all and it tends to be killick and senior rates they are worried most about.

My DH had similar issues (infact 4 years ago i could have written your post) DH was demoted from PO to LH for leaving the ship when i was pregnant and very ill. It did take longer than they said for him to get his rate back, they said 1 year, but it took a year and a half.

Its annoying but its the Navy.

Hi, just to say he is being given his LH back so yes, the branch they are worrying about!
DH is trying to speak to captain as DO doesn't seem to know anything.
Thanks again.
