York or Catterick?

DH is on a long course which is due to finish around Easter and has just been asked to put in posting preference form. Having done some digging re where there are likely to be openings for his trade we've kinda narrowed our preferences down to Catterick or York - based solely on their proximity to home (Glasgow). Catterick seems to be an hour closer, but wondered if any of you know much about either place? Is there any huge advantage to being in York over Catterick or vice versa? We have a DD almost 3yrs and are trying for another. Any advice appreciated.

I have lived in both! I would say Catterick is the bigger Garrison but York the nicer location - near to the seaside etc too.

There are also quick trains to Edinburgh/Glasgow - York is on the main line.

Hi
I am also from Glasgow. We were based in Catterick for 5yrs before moving back home. I went to York uni and had friends who were posted to Strensall.

So - my honest opinion would depend on what you are in to.

Catterick has improved greatly since we first went there (thank the lord for the big Tesco's ) and as hf says is a much bigger garrison, more army feeling than York.

York is beautiful and has much more to offer city/culture wise IMO.

I'd decide based on how often you want to come home to Glasgow, how much you're into military living and what you like to do in your spare time.

My DD was born while we were at Catterick and we had a fab CM and she really enjoyed the nursery

Thanks for the replies. Also now looking at Stafford as it looks like it's only 15 mins longer drive to my mums than York would be.
