I would advise that only one of you goes in at the moment, how old are your children - they must be young if you were putting them to bed, having just put mine to bed!

If you are a dental nurse then you have an ideal job to be mobile and follow your dh around the place, if you decide that is the life for you.

We have made the decision to live in our own home, back near Edinburgh, where I'm from. It's easier for me when dh is deployed to know that I have friends and family nearby.

Dh gets so many travel warrants per year and lives on board the ship so that cuts down the cost for us.

weepootle · 18/11/2008 19:55

We pay £89 per month for a 3 bedroom house.

YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 18/11/2008 19:56

now i really am confused!

didn't know that it was an average of the country, that makes sense.
I think Kingston had pretty cheap council tax, compared to what we are forced to pay up here.

cali · 18/11/2008 19:59

weepootle, we were £160 per month, does you dh's rank affect what you pay then?

weepootle · 18/11/2008 20:01

No, cali I'd imagine only offrs & soldrs pay different rates.

trockodile · 18/11/2008 20:03

Our CILOCT is 84.90 and we pay 164.70 for a 2 bedroom house plus 22.50 for a garage. Fuel costs 70.20 a month and every year you either get a credit ar debit for actual costs -we usually get a small credit. (BTW we are in Germany which is why fuel is paid through the army.)
Also in Germany you get extra money to compensate the costs of living overseas and get some tax free benefits.

cali · 18/11/2008 20:03

ahh, dh is an officer so that prob explains our ciloct charges then. I always just assumed that we were paying the going rate for the area we were living in.

YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 18/11/2008 20:06

ok so that maybe more do-able and i suppose tax credits would help us too i currently get £23 a week but hubby earnt £23k on his own last year mine was fairly measly compared lol

DH's pay statement in a Army behind the wire quarter, which is counted as substandard (we are about to be moved into a new refurbed quarter with full disturbance allowance £990.00) and as a NCO, is Accom charge 114.70 CILCOT 87.75.

Shoshe · 18/11/2008 20:19

Might be worth reading this

YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 18/11/2008 20:25

i dont really know what i am looking at on that site. lots of support though by looks of it!

OP posts:
YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 18/11/2008 20:27

so forgive me for prying but ytour dh gets £999 and then you get deductions from that?

whats substandard

OP posts:
weepootle · 18/11/2008 20:31

The £999 is not his pay- it's a disturbance allowance you get to assist you when you move house.

jcscot · 18/11/2008 20:34

Substandard usually means that it needs some work doing to it - like a new kitchen, or new windows etc.

I don't know if it's much help but our last CILOCT charge was £180-ish and our quarter charge was around £400 (this was two years ago, so I'm a little hazy on the details). However, that was for a top-graded four-bedroom quarter in London (my husband is an officer and this was for a house one rank above entitlement because they didn't have a Major's quarter available for us). Quarter charges vary from rank to rank and rise the higher up the food chain you go.

YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 18/11/2008 20:34

oh ok. i doubt we would get that moving in though?

i must be coming across as such a idiot here lol!

OP posts:
YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 18/11/2008 20:36

jcsot thanks for that!
obviously depends on where you end up then

OP posts:
jcscot · 18/11/2008 20:36

You don't get disturbance allowance (the £999 referred to) for your first move.

weepootle · 18/11/2008 20:40

If you fancy the idea of living overseas then depending on where you go your dh could earn an extra £400-800 per month in overseas allowances.

Shoshe · 18/11/2008 20:40

Or your last, we are moving into new refurbed quarter and then moving out again 3 months later as DH will be finished in the Army, we are saving the disturbance towards the final move.

weepootle · 18/11/2008 20:41

That worked out well for you then Shoshe!

Shoshe · 18/11/2008 20:45

Yep We have actually been waiting to move for over a year, but as with anything MOD, nothing is on time, it is now suppose to be Feb, hoping it will slip til April as we are leaving Quarter at the end of July so less time living out of boxes, I am only going to unpack the essentials, and have mobile phones broadband, and freeview.I wont have to pack myself then
