In the army, whats the difference between RSM, CSM and staff and colour Sgts? Are they NCO ranks? Which is the higher rank?

Does Robson do that thing where he looks at someone in a sideways cheeky chappie kind of way?

saltire · 03/09/2008 17:20

Thank you Shoshe. So what is the RAF equivlaent then? I don't know what petty officer is

RSM: Regimental Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class 1) Most senior NCO in the Regiment and considered to be CO's right hand man.

CSM: Company Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class 2) Company Commander's (a Major) right hand man.

Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class 2)

Staff Sergeant/Colour Sergeant

All NCO ranks. Hope that helps!

where have you been watching the re-runs?

i never caught it the first time round!

though i imagine it is nothing at all like living on the patch

hf128219 · 03/09/2008 17:28

I have every single episode on VHS - I loved it!

saltire · 03/09/2008 17:34

Kerry on Men and Motors on Mondays and Tuesdays at 10pm, repeated on Saturdays at 10.

RAF only have 1 x WO rank, and have a flight Sergeant to confuse everyone else.

Romy7 · 04/09/2008 12:53

but they call them all Bob or John, or Dinger, whereas the army call them all Mr (from above) or Sir/ by rank (from below)...

I just smile wearily and look confused if anyone naval turns up...

but I did love soldier soldier (only when i could watch it without dh doing a running commentary mind...)

Chuffinnora · 04/09/2008 12:54

I was flicking through the channels the other day and came across SS.
Robson was in a hospital bed looking quite poorly and his wife was sitting by his bed smoking!
Did they film them in the 1930s?

Idea about the actual answer to the OP though sorry, just had to share.

saltire · 04/09/2008 14:34

Chuffin - 1990s.
The hopsital bed probably came from the 30s though, as does most of the military equpiment

Meant to say - I know the RAF has Sgt, Flt Sgt/Chief Tech, WO ranks but wasn't sure what their Army/Navy equivalents were
