I need advice on what to wear to a Forces Do

I know this should probably be in "Style", but that section scares me , and as it's a Forces do I'm hoping someone here will be able to advise.

On Sunday I'm going with dh to an HM Hospital Ship Uganda reunion for Falklands Veterans. The dress code is Smart Casual. So .... that's not a dress like I would wear to a wedding is it? I was thinking nice skirt and top. Will that be OK? I don't want to turn up in the wrong thing.

I'd think smart casual would be casual dress with cardi/jacket (summer type thing), nice top and skirt or nice top and smart trousers .

Asked DH, and he said 'no-one knows' (women get away with much more than men)! Best way to approach, is work out what a DH would wear, and then think what you would normally wear to match. DH would probably wear shirt, trousers and jacket/blazer. Not a suit. So you'd get away with a nice skirt and top no probs. Poss a cardi too. You'll get a whole spectrum from too casual to cocktail dresses in all probability.

Yes, smart skirt/trousers and top is fine.

Generally best to avoid off the shoulder, strapless or halterneck tops, and skirts are best worn on the knee or longer.

Def cardi . I got a nice button cardi thing from Coast which would go well with trousers or a skirt.

Thank you! Nice skirt and top it is then. I don't really do cardi's, I'm more of a boardies and flip flop kinda gal, but I shall raid my sister's wardrobe!

We're going on the Aurora cruise ship and there'll be lunch. It'll be lovely, but also a very emotional day. I always brings up memories for dh but he does like being in touch with all his old buddies again.
